O’Reilly title contender Corey Day collides with Caruth, has title hopes take hit

Patrick Vallely | For NASCAR Digital Media

Corey Day entered Saturday's NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series Championship Race at Homestead-Miami Speedway 23 points behind Justin Allgaier, but his title hopes took a hit before Lap 10 after he collided and wrecked with JR Motorsports' Rajah Caruth. Racing around the top 10, Day looked to get his No. 17 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet to the front as soon as possible. On Lap 8, he attempted to make a pass on Caruth down the backstretch, but as the pair entered Turn 3, Day moved up too soon and made contact with the front end of Caruth's No. 88 Chevrolet. The contact turned Day into the outside wall, and both drivers suffered damage to their race cars. Caruth continued on track following the incident and remained on the lead lap. Barring unforeseen circumstances, the five-way battle for the O'Reilly title entering the season finale is now down to four: Allgaier, Jesse Love, Carson Kvapil and Homestead polesitter Sheldon Creed.
