Sunday’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 NASCAR Cup Series event marks the 116th race hosted by Atlanta Motor Speedway in the series’ history. The 1.54-mile D-shaped oval racetrack will debut a new racing surface with 28 degrees of banking in the turns and 5 degrees on the straightaway. This new asphalt features brand new technology, with multiple layers of asphalt that serve different purposes, to better help when dealing with the weather. When the track first opened in 1960, the Cup Series held its inaugural race with Fireball Roberts as the winner.
Atlanta Motor Speedway is 1.5 miles (2.41 km) long and a 500-mile race that requires 325 laps to complete.
