Kasey Kahne 2017 Season Recap

Kasey Kahne, driver of the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, finished 15th in the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series standings. See highlights from his 14th year in the premier series.

Kahne snapped a 102-race winless streak in the Brickyard 400 on July 23, passing Brad Keselowski in overtime. The win, the 18th of his career, came after a grueling six-hour race that led an exhausted Kahne to make a trip to the infield care center for fluids post-race.

Kahne's win at Indianapolis earned the No. 5 team a spot in the playoffs, his first appearance in the post-season run for a championship since 2015. He was eliminated at Dover, following finishes of 21st, 35th and 14th in the opening round.

After six years with the organization, Hendrick Motorsports announced on Aug. 7 that Kahne would not return to the team next season. 'I'd like to thank Rick (Hendrick) and everyone at Hendrick Motorsports for their hard work and dedication, along with providing me a great opportunity and success over the last six years,' he said.

Hendrick Motorsports Director of Competition Services Darian Grubb was named crew chief on Sept. 18 for the remaining nine races of the season, replacing Keith Rodden. Prior to his return to HMS in 2016, Grubb was previously crew chief for Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin and Carl Edwards.

One day later, Leavine Family Racing revealed Kahne as the driver of the No. 95 -- previously piloted by Michael McDowell -- for the 2018 season. The announcement came a little over a month after HMS announced Kahne would not drive for the organization next season.

In October, Leavine Racing Racing announced that No. 88 car chief Travis Mack would serve as Kahne's crew chief for 2018. Mack has worked as No. 88 car chief since 2015 and filled in as crew chief for Dale Earnhardt Jr. at Richmond in 2017. He also served as car chief for Regan Smith and Chase Elliott and was a part of Elliott's 2014 XFINITY championship-winning team.
