Layne Riggs Day in Durham, North Carolina

To honor the 2022 NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series national champion, March 3, 2023 was officially declared Layne Riggs Day in Durham, North Carolina.

Riggs, the 20-year-old from nearby Bahama, North Carolina, received a signed letter from North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper to commemorate Layne Riggs Day in Durham.

In a battle that came down to the final weekend of competition last year, Riggs beat out defending title winner Peyton Sellers to become the youngest NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series national champion in series history. Sellers was previously the youngest Weekly Series champion, winning in 2005 at 21 years old.

Riggs didn’t start the 2022 season with the goal of racing for a Weekly Series national championship, but when the team opened the year with a string of wins at Virginia's South Boston Speedway, the plan changed. Encouragement from their fellow competitors led the small, family-owned team run by his father (and former NASCAR Cup Series driver) Scott Riggs to reconsider their focus and aim for the championship.

Riggs is a third-year student at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, studying mechanical engineering. Additionally, he ran a pair of NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races in 2022, recording a seventh-place result at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park in his NASCAR national series debut.

In addition to winning the Weekly Series national championship in 2022, Riggs also won the Southeast Region title, as well as the track championship at South Boston Speedway. He tallied a total of 43 starts between Dominion Raceway, Hickory Motor Speedway, Motor Mile Speedway, South Boston Speedway and Wake County Speedway. He recorded 16 wins with 30 top-five and 38 top-10 finishes.

Riggs plans to compete in select NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series events in 2023 among other late-model races. He also hopes to continue to compete part-time in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.
