Corey Day collides with Caruth, dashing his O’Reilly championship hopes

Corey Day entered Saturday’s NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series Championship Race at Homestead-Miami Speedway 23 points behind Justin Allgaier, but his title hopes all but ended before Lap 10 after he collided and wrecked with JR Motorsports’ Rajah Caruth.

Racing around the top 10, Day looked to get his No. 17 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet to the front as soon as possible. On Lap 8, he attempted to make a pass on Caruth down the backstretch, but as the pair entered Turn 3, Day moved up too soon and made contact with the front end of Caruth’s No. 88 Chevrolet. The contact turned Day into the outside wall, and both drivers suffered damage to their race cars.

Day was towed to the garage for repairs, with the No. 17 team returning to the contest 17 laps down. Caruth continued on track following the incident and remained on the lead lap.

Ultimately, Day was scored with a 34th-place finish, 25 laps in arrears. He finished the season fifth in points, 61 markers behind Justin Allgaier – who won his second title in three years with a seventh-place finish.

Jesse Love finished the season second in points, with Carson Kvapil in third and Sheldon Creed in fourth.
