HAMPTON, GA — March 26, 1961: Bob Burdick’s only NASCAR Cup win came in the Atlanta 500 at Atlanta International Raceway. Burdick was driving a Pontiac for his dad, Roy Burdick. This was a part-time, family-owned operation and, despite not being able to afford new tires or a professional pit crew, was still competitive in nearly every race they entered. They even had to borrow a replacement rear end from a competitor just to make the race in Atlanta. Roy Burdick nearly won the inaugural Daytona 500 in 1959 with veteran driver Johnny Beauchamp behind the wheel of his Ford Thunderbird, losing in a photo finish to Lee Petty.
