UNKNOWN:  Despite only a third grade education, Jake Elder became one of the top crew chiefs and mechanics on the NASCAR Cup circuit. Starting as a fabricator for Petty Enterprises in 1960, Elder went on to win the NASCAR Cup title as crew chief for David Pearson’s Holman-Moody Fords in 1968 and 1969. He was also part of Dale Earnhardt’s first Cup title in 1980, although he left Rod Osterlund’s effort at mid-season. Elder earned the nickname “Suitcase Jake” because he never was able to settle down with one organization, and kept moving from team to team during his career. UNKNOWN Ñ 1950s:  Ralph Moody began racing in 1935 and he ran Sprint Cars, Jalopies and Modified stock cars before World War II interrupted his career, as he did a stint with the Army Air Corps.  Moody eventually had a brief time on the NASCAR Cup circuit, running 47 races, 45 of which were in 1956 and 1957.  He won five Cup races during the Õ56 and Õ57 seasons, and another four USAC stock car events in 1957.  He then became a noted car builder after forming a partnership with John Holman in 1957.
