New Hampshire Motor Speedway was the brainchild of Bob Bahre, who purchased the property that previously housed Bryar Motorsports Park in Loudon, New Hampshire, with the intent to build a venue capable of welcoming NASCAR to the region.

After beginning construction in 1989, work was completed on the 1.058-mile oval in June of 1990. The facility hosted its first NASCAR race shortly thereafter, with Tommy Ellis winning a NASCAR Xfinity Series event that July.

In 1993, the NASCAR Cup Series made its first visit to what has become known as "The Magic Mile." Rusty Wallace raced to victory in the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series event at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on July 11, 1993.

On Nov. 2, 2007, Speedway Motorsports' O. Bruton Smith agreed to purchase New Hampshire Motor Speedway from the Bahre family. Speedway Motorsports continues to own the facility to this day.
