Located in Thompson, Connecticut, Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park is the brainchild of John Hoenig, who built both a short track and road course in 1940 after a hurricane had devastated the region two years earlier.

Once known as the Indianapolis of the East, Thompson was the first asphalt-paved oval track in the United States and has attracted numerous divisions over its long history.

The NASCAR Cup Series and ARCA Menards Series East have both run at Thompson, but one of the track's main attractions has been the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, hosting more than 150 races for the series since the inaugural season in 1985.

In the early days of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, Thompson would be featured on the calendar as many as five times. NASCAR Hall of Famer Richie Evans formally kickstarted this tradition by winning the first four races at the track in 1985, with George Kent Jr. being the one preventing him from obtaining a clean sweep.
