As a part of factory involvement in NASCAR Cup Series racing, Chevrolet placed Hugh Babb in charge of an operation in Atlanta, Georgia, where cars were built and distributed to select drivers. These cars were black and white 1957 Chevys, coined "Black Widows." Drivers at the beginning of the season included Jack Smith (No. 47), Buck Baker, Speedy Thompson, Rex White and Frankie Schneider.

Marshall Teague had the first factory-supported NASCAR racing effort, as the brand reigned 1952-54. Here on Daytona Beach, Florida, in 1951, the local competitor Teague captured the race. He also owned the popular winning entry Herb Thomas drove for Hudson.
