As a part of factory involvement in NASCAR Cup Series racing, Chevrolet placed Hugh Babb in charge of an operation in Atlanta, Georgia, where cars were built and distributed to select drivers. These cars were black and white 1957 Chevys, coined "Black Widows." Drivers at the beginning of the season included Jack Smith (No. 47), Buck Baker, Speedy Thompson, Rex White and Frankie Schneider.
