How many NASCAR teams are there?
There are 15 full-time organizations in the NASCAR Cup Series. Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing both field four-car teams, the maximum allowed in NASCAR.
What makes up a NASCAR team?
A NASCAR organization is limited to four cars in each of the NASCAR national series. Teams mostly utilize one manufacturer (Chevrolet, Ford, Toyota) for all of their cars, but have a different car number and crew chief for each driver. Different teams that share the same manufacturer often work together in an alliance. For example, Wood Brothers Racing has a technical alliance with Team Penske.
How many teams can a NASCAR owner have?
A NASCAR owner typically fields one team, but it can compete across all three NASCAR national series. For example, Joe Gibbs Racing has a NASCAR Cup Series operation and a NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series program.
How many cars can a NASCAR team have?
A NASCAR team can have a maximum of four full-time cars. Organizations that didn't already have four cars before the 2025 season are capped at three full-time teams.
