Alex Bowman, a Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender for BK Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, will drive the No. 5 NASCAR Nationwide Series car at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the Blue Cross Blue Shield Drive for the Cure 300 (Oct. 10, 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2).
The team announced it via a JRM 360 video on Thursday, showing Bowman sneaking his way into the shop and putting his name above the door. Watch the video below.
Co-owner Kelley Earnhardt Miller talked about Bowman getting behind the wheel on “The Morning Drive” on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio on Friday.
“We had an opening in our car for Charlotte and an opening in Phoenix this year so they’re excited about running Charlotte and if they can put some funding together for Phoenix,” Earnhardt Miller said. “For us, our original business for JR Motorsports is to build that talent and send them to the next level. Alex had the opportunity to run in the Sprint Cup car this year.
“Being on the track every week is important so we’re excited about him and his talent and hopefully seeing if we can put something together in the future with somebody like him.”
Earnhardt Miller also looked ahead to 2015, noting sponsorship on championship contender Regan Smith‘s car is almost complete after Dale Earnhardt Jr. announced on Twitter earlier this week that Smith would return.
“We’re going to have Kasey Kahne, I think, drive a few more races for us in the 5 car so that’s about the only difference,” Earnhardt Miller said. “We have about six races open on Regan’s car for sponsorship so we’re situated pretty good….”
