Joe Gibbs Racing No. 54 crew members suspended after Las Vegas infraction

Two crew members from Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 54 Toyota team for rookie Ty Gibbs were issued suspensions Tuesday after a wheel detached from the car during last Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series playoff race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Gibbs and the No. 54 team were penalized on Lap 216 of the 267-lap South Point 400, shortly after his scrape of the Turn 2 wall forced the race’s seventh caution period. The right-front wheel came off as he limped through Turns 3 and 4, and Gibbs was held for two laps on pit road.

Tuesday, competition officials handed down two-race suspensions to No. 54 team crew members Braxton Brannon (jack) and Jackson Gibbs (front-tire changer) under Sections 8.8.10.4.A & C (Tires and Wheels) in the NASCAR Rule Book. The bans are set to be in effect for the Cup Series’ events this Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway and Oct. 29 at Martinsville Speedway.

Gibbs ended up 34th in the 36-car field, eight laps off the pace.
