Live-event engagement, mobile expansion result in unprecedented year-over-year growth

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Dec. 22, 2014) — In only the second full year of managing its digital rights in-house, NASCAR has experienced significant growth, exceeding one billion aggregate page views across NASCAR.com®, NASCAR mobile web and the NASCAR Mobile™ app in 2014. The billion page view milestone marks a 45-percent year-over-year increase in engagement on the platform, according to data from Adobe Omniture SiteCatalyst.

This year, NASCAR.com, the ultimate online destination for NASCAR news, content and live race-day experiences, also saw a 36 percent year-over-year increase in average unique visitors, according to data from ComScore My Metrix Multiplatform Data (Feb. – Nov.). This includes a 90 percent year-over-year increase during the month of November, which included the last three races of the brand-new Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup™ playoff format and the crowning of a first-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series™ champion. Aggregate on-platform video views were also up 84 percent year-over-year in 2014, according to data from Adobe Omniture SiteCatalyst.

"In 2014, we focused on fine-tuning and expanding our digital offerings for fans," said Colin Smith, vice president of NASCAR Digital Media. "We improved the overall site layout and usability, published more exclusive content to fans, refined our mobile app features and increased our live content availability. These enhancements, along with some fantastic on-track drama during the new Chase, have helped strengthen our presence, and as a result, fan engagement has never been higher."

Also in 2014, NASCAR added two new products to its gaming portfolio — Perfect Chase Grid™ Challenge and The Chase Grid™ Battle Game — giving fans the chance to play along with the highly anticipated revamped playoffs. As a result of these additions and a centralized online Chase experience, cross-platform unique visitors were up more than 50 percent year-over-year during the 10 Chase races in 2014 (Sept. – Nov.), according to data from ComScore. This surge in usage also validated heightened interest in the sport’s new postseason format. Additionally, average page views across NASCAR’s fantasy platform — Fantasy Live and Streak to the Finish™ — were up 83 percent as compared to 2013 according to data from Adobe Omniture SiteCatalyst.

"Fans can expect to see new site experiences, a richer gaming platform, educational tools to learn more about the sport, and more detailed stats and live analysis around the racing action in 2015," said Smith. "We are looking forward to building on this momentum in 2015."

The 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series regular season will kick off with the 57th running of the DAYTONA 500® on Sunday, Feb. 23 at Daytona International Speedway®. The Great American Race® will be broadcast live on FOX, Motor Racing Network Radio and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, with additional coverage on NASCAR.com.

• 2014 Season In Review Also Features Year In Photos, Video Highlights Package

FORT WORTH, Texas (December 16, 2014) – The year at Texas Motor Speedway opened with pyrotechnics celebrating the unveiling of the world’s largest, high-definition LED video board in March and culminated in November with additional fireworks courtesy of the post-race melee involving combatants Brad Keselowski and Jeff Gordon in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series AAA Texas 500 Eliminator 8 Chase race.

There also was plenty of action and excitement in between as Texas Motor Speedway played host to its annual Duck Commander 500 NASCAR doubleheader in April, Firestone 600 INDYCAR/NASCAR twin bill in June and played host to its inaugural Red Bull Air Race World Championship event in September.

The Texas Motor Speedway 2014 Season In Review recaps those major event weekends, in addition to the momentous "Big Hoss TV" unveiling, while the accompanying Texas Motor Speedway Year in Photos captures all those key moments in addition to other noteworthy speedway-related events throughout the year. The Texas Motor Speedway Year in Photos features 90 images – primarily from the speedway’s official photo agency Getty Images – that were chosen for their significance and/or artistic value and are presented in chronological order. A three-minute video recap of the top on-track moments, including the AAA Texas 500 post-race skirmish, also is available in HD by clicking here. All photos and video are free for media outlets to utilize, especially for their year-end, wrap-ups and can be previewed by visiting www.texasmotorspeedway.com or downloaded by visiting www.image.net/tmsinreview2014.

Let’s take a look back:

  • "Big Hoss TV" Unveiling / Wednesday, March 19

The Skinny: The world’s largest, high-definition LED video board is unveiled amid fanfare and will be one of the most impactful fan enhancements in the history of Texas Motor Speedway and the world of motorsports.

The Recap: Texas Motor Speedway unveiled the world’s largest, high-definition LED video board in grand fashion as the evening featured fireworks, motorsports stars, reality television celebrities, dignitaries and the showing of an episode from A&E’s hit reality show "Duck Dynasty" for more than 8,000 fans situated in the infield of the world-class sports facility.

The official debut of the Panasonic-built "Big Hoss TV" was part of a star-studded evening that included appearances by Duck Commander CEO and "Duck Dynasty" star Willie Robertson and his wife, Korie, along with the heralded racing duo of NASCAR’s Kyle Busch and INDYCAR’s Helio Castroneves. Also in attendance were dignitaries such as NASCAR President Mike Helton, Hulman & Co. CEO Mark Miles, Panasonic Eco Solutions North America Vice President Richard Ballard, Speedway Motorsports, Inc. Chairman Bruton Smith, SMI President and COO Marcus Smith and Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price.

Positioned in the middle of the backstretch and stretching 218 feet wide by 94.6 feet tall, "Big Hoss TV" features 20,633.64 square feet of HD LED imagery that contains 281 trillion colors. The video board, constructed in just four months, surpassed fellow Speedway Motorsports, Inc. facility Charlotte Motor Speedway (16,000 square feet) as the Guinness World Record holder for the world’s largest HD LED video board. The size of "Big Hoss TV" is staggering as it is 79 percent larger than the video board at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, which is 11,520 square feet.

"It is the ultimate fan amenity," Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage said. "To have the biggest one in the world, that’s just one of those ‘Everything is Bigger in Texas’ stories that we are really proud to be a part of."

The Skinny: Rain forces a Monday matinee for only the third time in speedway history and Joey Logano wins the Duck Commander 500 for an automatic berth in the reformatted Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

The Recap: With Duck Commander on board as the title sponsor and the "Duck Dynasty" stars on hand en masse, the weather was more conducive for duck hunting that NASCAR racing. The Duck Commander 500, moved from its Saturday night slot to Sunday afternoon to avoid a conflict with the NCAA Final Four men’s college basketball tourney being in Arlington, was washed out due to continual rain showers and rescheduled for a Monday matinee. It was just the third time in Texas Motor Speedway‘s 18-year history that a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race was run on Monday due to inclement weather, the most recent coming in 2010 when both the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series races were run on the same day.

Penske Racing’s Joey Logano punched his ticket for a berth in the restructured Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup format after surviving a green/white-checkered finish to win the Duck Commander 500. Logano was cruising to victory with a two-second lead over teammate Brad Keselowski with just over one lap remaining in the scheduled 334-lap event, but a caution for debris forced a two-lap overtime shootout. Logano restarted third after pitting for four tires while Jeff Gordon and Brian Vickers opted for two tires and restarted first and second, respectively. Gordon held off Logano on the first lap, but Logano got a strong run inside on the frontstretch and was able to overtake him in Turn 1 and pull away to a 0.476 of a second margin of victory in the race that was extended to 340 laps. The victory was Logano’s first since August of 2013 at Michigan and the fourth of his career. It also was his first Sprint Cup win at Texas Motor Speedway, which was highlighted by him becoming the youngest Cup winner in TMS history at 23 years, 10 months and 14 days.

The Skinny: Rookie Chase Elliott, the 18-year-old son of NASCAR great Bill Elliott, lands his first career Nationwide Series victory in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 300 to become the second-youngest winner in series history.

The Recap: Nationwide Series O’Reilly Auto Parts 300 provided a historic milestone for a second-generation NASCAR driver and a glimpse into the talent that would flourish and lead to a series championship. Rookie Chase Elliott, the 18-year-old high school senior and son of NASCAR great Bill Elliott, needed just six starts in the Nationwide Series for his first career win that came in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 300.

Elliott made a bold move on the high side of Kevin Harvick in the elbow of the frontstretch to take the lead on Lap 185 and then held on for a 2.251-second victory over Kyle Busch in the 200-lap event. Elliott became the second-youngest winner in series history at 18 years, 4 months and 8 days.

  • Verizon IndyCar Series Firestone 600 / Saturday, June 7

The Skinny: Will Power’s late pit lane penalty opens the door for Ed Carpenter to capture the Firestone 600 and become the first American winner at TMS since Sam Hornish Jr. in 2007.

The Recap: The annual INDYCAR/NASCAR summer doubleheader yielded two first-time Texas Motor Speedway winners as Matt Crafton won the Camping World Truck Series WinStar World Casino 350 and Ed Carpenter was victorious in the Verizon IndyCar Series Firestone 600.

Carpenter took advantage of a strong second-half race performance and a critical late pit lane penalty by Will Power to record his first series victory since 2012 in the Firestone 600. The victory was the third of Carpenter’s career and his first since winning the 2012 season finale at Fontana. In his previous 12 starts at Texas Motor Speedway, he had just one top-five finish and led one lap (2009) before breaking through to become the first American to win at Texas since Sam Hornish Jr. in 2007.

Carpenter led 66 of the final 67 laps of the 248-lap event and avoided a potential shootout for the win with Power, who was running second when he was caught speeding in pit lane on his final green-flag pit stop. With 36 to go, Carpenter and Power pitted together and came out 1-2, but Power received a drive-thru penalty for speeding and fell a lap down.

Carpenter suddenly had a nine-plus second cushion over second-place Tony Kanaan and was coasting to victory with an 18.5-second lead before a final caution came out with seven laps remaining. The race became a two-lap shootout and Carpenter was able to stave off Juan Pablo Montoya and the hard-charging Power, who moved from sixth to second and finished 0.52 of a second behind Carpenter.

The Skinny: Defending Camping World Truck Series champ Matt Crafton snaps a 26-race winless streak at TMS with a dominant victory in the WinStar World Casino & Resort 400.

The Recap: Defending NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion Matt Crafton had it easy compared to Verizon IndyCar Series driver Ed Carpenter in earning his first career win at Texas Motor Speedway. He led a career-best 118 laps en route to the victory in the WinStar World Casino & Resort 400 that snapped a 26-race winless streak at the speedway.

Crafton led 118 of the 167 laps – the most he led in a single race in his 14-year career – and cruised to a 13.302-second victory over runner-up Justin Lofton. It was the fifth win of Crafton’s career and second of the season, marking the first time in his career that he had recorded multiple wins in a season. His dominant performance established a track record for largest margin of victory in that series, eclipsing the previous mark of 11.817 seconds set by Dennis Setzer in this event in 2004.

  • Red Bull Air Race World Championship / Saturday, Sept. 6, & Sunday, Sept. 7

The Skinny: Texas Motor Speedway plays host to the first race in the United States since 2010 for the Red Bull Air Race World Championship, which returned to competition after a three-year hiatus.

The Recap: The Red Bull Air Race World Championship made its return to the United States for the first time since 2010 as Texas Motor Speedway played host to the sixth stage of the eight-event international plane racing series.

Before a crowd of more than 20,000 for the first of two U.S. stops, Frenchman Nicolas Ivanoff captured his first victory of the season in the elite Master Class on the challenging, seven air gate, 3.7-mile course that was built in the infield of the motorsports venue. Ivanoff posted an individual two-lap run of 54.118 seconds to defeat Great Britain’s Nigel Lamb, Canada’s Pete McLeod and Germany’s Matthias Dolderer in the Final 4 showdown on Sunday. Ivanoff gave his country a sweep of the weekend competition as fellow Frenchman Mikael Brageot won the Challenger Cup race the day prior.

The Skinny: A post-race confrontation between Jeff Gordon and Brad Keselowski and ensuing melee steals national headlines from six-time series champion Jimmie Johnson winning the AAA Texas 500 for a third year in a row.

The Recap: With the remaining eight Chase for NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers looking to win the AAA Texas 500 and automatically advance to the championship round, six-time series champion Jimmie Johnson played the role of spoiler as he won the Eliminator 8 race in a dramatic second green/white-checkered overtime finish.

Johnson, eliminated from championship contention in the previous round, won the AAA Texas 500 for a record third consecutive year, but it was the post-race scuffle that made national headlines the following day. While Johnson was celebrating his track-record fourth Cup win with burnouts on the frontstretch, chaos ensued on pit lane after an angry Jeff Gordon confronted Brad Keselowski and a fray quickly developed between the Chase contenders. Fellow Chase competitor Kevin Harvick pushed Keselowski while Gordon was jawing with him and the situation quickly escalated as the crews got involved and transformed into a melee.

The disagreement stemmed from the first GWC finish, where Gordon took the restart with the lead and Johnson beside him on the front row. Johnson grabbed the lead when a bold move by Keselowski resulted in contact with Gordon, which ultimately led to a flat tire, contact with the wall and a 29th-place finish that would derail his title aspirations.

The caution flew for Gordon that set up the second GWC finish, where Keselowski found himself lining up front against the leader Johnson on the restart. Johnson, on the inside, maintained the lead on the restart while Keselowski found himself also trying to fend off a charging Harvick. Harvick got past Keselowski on that lap but didn’t have enough time to chase down Johnson, who won by 0.513 of a second for his fourth victory of the season and 70th of his career.

Johnson led nine times for 191 laps, but a record 13 cautions continually bunched the field as well as changed race strategies to give a number of drivers a shot at the victory.Johnson, Harvick and Keselowski took the top three positions, respectively, while Kyle Busch, who was looking to sweep all three NASCAR races after truck and Nationwide wins earlier, finished fourth.

The Skinny: Kyle Busch gives Joe Gibbs Racing its 100th career Nationwide Series win and sets his sights on rare NASCAR tripleheader weekend sweep after winning the O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge.

The Recap: Kyle Busch added to the weekend drama and intrigue when he secured the second leg of a rare NASCAR tripleheader weekend sweep with a win in the Nationwide Series O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge.

Busch completed the Nationwide Series/Camping World Truck Series sweep for the second time in his career at Texas Motor Speedway, with the first coming in the fall of 2009. That only left Sunday’s AAA Texas 500 as the missing prize for the triple, which had only been accomplished by Busch (Bristol 2010) in the history of NASCAR.

Busch extended his record for career Nationwide Series victories at Texas Motor Speedway by adding his seventh with a 1.562-second win over Joey Logano. Busch, who led six times for a race-high 116 laps, and Logano, who led five times for 59 laps, exchanged the lead six times over the final 85 laps in the 200-lap event before Busch took control late.

It also was his seventh NNS victory of the season, 70th in his career and a milestone 100th for Joe Gibbs Racing.

The Skinny: Kyle Busch wins the WinStar World Casino & Resort 350 as Kyle Busch Motorsports ties the Camping World Truck Series record for most victories in a season.

The Recap: Kyle Busch, competing in all three NASCAR races during the weekend and chasing a rare sweep, endured a green/white-checkered overtime finish to secure the first leg with a victory in the WinStar World Casino & Resort 350.

Busch, who led a race-high 80 of 152 laps, was cruising to victory when two late cautions put a scare into his bid to secure his seventh win in just nine NCWTS starts this season. Following the final caution that led to the two-lap shootout, Busch got a strong restart on the outside of leader German Quiroga and took command of the lead coming out of Turn 2. He was pulling away with one lap to go when Quiroga hit the wall in Turn 2 to force the conclusion of the final lap to finish under caution.

Busch’s series-leading seventh win was his third truck victory at Texas Motor Speedway that pushed his career total in the series to 42. It also was the 12th victory overall for Kyle Busch Motorsports in 20 starts this season, tying the series record for season victories set by Ultra Motorsports in 2001.

At first race, student from Dominican Republic soaks it all in

Students are encouraged to work as active media members at the race track and ultimately tell the story of their unique experience at a NASCAR event. Following each immersion, one student will have the chance to see their work published on NASCAR.com.

Last month, Nerys Medina, a student from the Dominican Republic, attended Ford Championship Weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway and filed this story.

This journey started by chance. Thanks to the Student Media Immersion program that provided my friend Marjorie and I the chance to witness the last race of 2014 of what I now know as the NASCAR Camping Truck World Series. It was a wonderful experience.

I am Nerys Medina, an advertisement student from the Dominican Republic. Until recently, the only thing I knew about NASCAR was its name and that it was something related to cars. Now I know better.

We arrived at Homestead-Miami Speedway where we were dropped off at Gate 1. After taking photos and being amazed at finally arriving there, we approached the track staff to ask about credentials and the Media Center … that was the start of what we fondly call the “Epic Quest.”

After confusion over the credential location, we finally arrived at the credential office where we were spotted by Edward Williams, a really friendly and kind member of the NASCAR Integrated Marketing Communications staff who was assigned to provide us with credentials needed to start our adventure.

We arrived at the Media Center where we met Laura, John and Yvette who helped Edward during our stay. We were guided around the Media Center and stopped in the cafeteria for a snack.

After eating, Laura informed us that we’d get the opportunity to interview a very important character, Alba Colon. Alba is the lead engineer of Chevrolet Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. She informed us about the manufacturers participating in the races: Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota and talked to us about many things, including Chevrolet’s friendly rivalry with Ford. Talking with Alba was an incredible experience; she explained many things and gave us good tips for the future.

The place we talked to Alba was in the driver press conference room where Edward told us later all the drivers and sponsors would be for the driver/crew chief meeting. Meanwhile, the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series trophy was already on stage so we were allowed to take a few pictures with it.

After the inspiring talk with Alba, Edward proposed a tour of the garages and explained the gist of the different inspections that the cars have to pass in order to be able to compete. We also saw Victory Lane where Edward told us that the race winner goes with the winning car (in our case truck) and celebrates with the crew members and fans. We walked around the track for a long time taking pictures of different cars and listening to all of the details provided.

Laura later found us and invited us to see a live interview with Austin Dillon. We saw that he was given a special headset in order to listen and answer the questions asked by the reporter. It was really interesting and I was astonished that he could hear and answer calmly without being bothered by cars running in the background. I wonder if the saying ‘practice makes perfect’ could be used in that situation.

A few minutes before the start of the race, we were provided with earplugs and a device called ‘FanVision,’ which contained the drivers’ stats and showed the race live.

Earplugs ready, excitement and giddiness present, we watched the race and pit stops from behind pit road. With trucks in their positions and everyone holding their breath, in the blink of an eye the race started.

When the trucks were racing, I couldn’t believe how fast they could go. I was able to admire a couple of pit stops. Seeing the speed and precision to change old tires, adding or removing changes to the truck and even giving it a push when needed was awe-inspiring.

It was an incredible experience watching everything live and it makes you really appreciate all of the dedication and effort everyone pours in their work.

In all, it was a wonderful day and also an eye-opening experience that got me really interested in NASCAR. Before, I thought a race was only cars going in circles and nothing else, but after seeing everything, I’m aware now of all the hard work needed to keep such an incredible event in top-notch condition. The knowledge gained from this trip is something that will stay with me for a long time.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Sprint Cup drivers will help pilot one entry

Chip Ganassi Racing announced Thursday that Kyle Larson and Jamie McMurray will compete in the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the season-opening event in the 2015 IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.

The two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teammates for Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates will be making return trips to the 24-hour endurance event, which will take place Jan. 24-25 at Daytona International Speedway. They will team with a pair of Indianapolis 500 winners in Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan for a four-driver effort in the No. 02 Ford-powered Riley Daytona Prototype chassis.

McMurray will mark his seventh appearance in the road-racing classic; his best Rolex 24 finish was a runner-up performance in 2011. Larson, the 2014 Sunoco Rookie of the Year in the Sprint Cup Series, will be making his second Rolex 24 start, one year after finishing 15th overall in the No. 02 with Dixon, Kanaan and Marino Franchitti.

Ganassi will also field the No. 01 entry for primary driver Scott Pruett, who has scored all five of his Rolex 24 triumphs with the venerable team owner. Pruett will team with road racer Joey Hand, IndyCar driver Charlie Kimball and developmental driver Sage Karam.

"I love this race because it is one of the few times that we are able to bring all of our drivers and partners together in one race," Ganassi said. "NASCAR, INDYCAR and IMSA drivers and partners are all represented in this unique endurance event. We have had the good fortune of having success in this event, which is the result of a lot of hard work by the crew, talent behind the wheel and at some level, a little luck. But I think the best thing about the Rolex 24 is that it is the first event of another season. I can’t wait."

The 53rd running of the Rolex 24 signals not only the kickoff event for the IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship season, but also offers a prelude to Daytona’s Speedweeks

Menards to serve as primary sponsor for No. 33 XFINITY ride in select races

Richard Childress Racing announced Thursday that Menards has extended its sponsorship of the team’s efforts in the NASCAR XFINITY Series.

FULL SERIES COVERAGE

The agreement will keep the Wisconsin-based home-improvement company’s familiar fluorescent yellow colors on the RCR No. 33 Chevrolet in select races for the fourth straight season. Menards also provides backing for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series regular Paul Menard on Childress’ No. 27 entry.

"Menards has become a key supporter of our XFINITY Series program through the past few years and I look forward to an even better future with them," said team owner Richard Childress. "John Menard has vast experience in motorsports and business and I have leaned on him for advice during our partnership. I can’t thank him enough for being there."

The team said that Menard and 17-year-old Brandon Jones will split duty in the No. 33 next year with Menards sponsorship. In late November, RCR announced that Austin Dillon would drive the majority of the No. 33 team’s races with backing by Rheem.

A rotation of four drivers spent time wheeling the No. 33 Camaro last season, with Menard scoring the lone victory at Michigan International Speedway in June. Cale Conley, two-time Camping World Truck Series champion Matt Crafton and former Nationwide Series champ Dillon also took turns in the No. 33 cockpit.

Jones was announced as an addition to Childress’ developmental program in early November. The Atlanta native finished fourth in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East standings last season, posting an impressive victory at Iowa Speedway in August in a race for the combined East and West tours.

Driver set to compete in NASCAR XFINITY Series

Darrell "Bubba" Wallace Jr., third in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series final standings this past season and a graduate of NASCAR Next and Drive for Diversity initiatives, will compete in the NASCAR XFINITY Series in 2015 for Roush Fenway Racing, according to RFR officials.

Wallace, 21, will join drivers Chris Buescher, Ryan Reed and Elliott Sadler in the RFR lineup.

FULL SERIES COVERAGE

Wallace will pilot the organization’s No. 6 Ford Mustang previously driven by Trevor Bayne. Additional team personnel and sponsorship will be announced at a later date.

"I’ve had a remarkable journey over the last few years thanks to people who have put me in a position to win the races that I have," Wallace said. "When I first joined the sport, many said I would never compete with the real drivers. Now, as I join the winningest (XFINITY) team in NASCAR history, I take that as a responsibility to add more wins to the team’s legacy and help tear down the barriers for the next generation of NASCAR drivers."

Wallace won five races from 2013-14 while competing in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series for Kyle Busch Motorsports, scoring four this past season.

RELATED: Bubba done with KBM as team announces 2015 lineup

In 2013, he became the first African American driver to win a NASCAR national series event in 50 years when he won his first Camping World Truck Series race at Martinsville Speedway. This past year, he successfully defended his title while driving an entry whose paint scheme and number 34 paid tribute to NASCAR’s first African American winner, Wendell Scott.

Wallace made six career Nationwide (soon to be XFINITY) Series starts for Joe Gibbs Racing, with whom he was under contract, between 2012-14. He finished in the top 10 in four of those starts, with a best finish of seventh at Iowa (in 2012) and Daytona (2014).

However, without sponsorship to remain at KBM, and with no funding for him at JGR in the XFINITY Series, Wallace asked for and was granted his release earlier this month.

RFR president Steve Newmark said Wallace "is viewed in industry circles as one of the brightest young drivers."

"He has a charismatic personality and at the same time has exhibited the ability to win on the race track," Newmark said. "We are looking forward to getting him in our race cars next season."

In addition to the four XFINITY Series teams, Roush Fenway also fields teams in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series for drivers Bayne, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Greg Biffle.

Bayne, who is making the move up to compete full time in the Sprint Cup Series in 2015, finished sixth in the Nationwide Series this past season, while Buescher, who won once, was seventh and Reed ninth.

Sadler spent the previous two seasons at JGR, finishing fourth in 2013 and third this past year.

Roush Fenway Racing’s XFINITY Series program is the winningest in NASCAR, having earned 133 victories. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (2011-12), Carl Edwards (2007) and Biffle (2002) have won series championships for the group.

"We are certainly pleased to have Bubba Wallace come on board," team co-owner Jack Roush said. "He is certainly a great young talent and I feel it will be mutually beneficial for us to be able to put him into a team environment with a veteran driver like Elliott (Sadler) and the young guys Chris Buescher and Ryan Reed.

"We have had a great deal of history in the NASCAR XFINITY Series and we are happy to have Bubba as the latest piece of that rich legacy."

The addition of Wallace to the Ford camp is a boost for the automaker as well.

"We’re thrilled to have Bubba Wallace be part of our Ford Mustang racing efforts," said Jamie Allison, director, Ford Racing. "His winning performances since becoming part of NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity program have certainly made him one of the drivers in the sport to watch in the future, and we think he can bring a lot to Roush Fenway and Ford, both on and off the track."

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Ben Kennedy knows all too well that the holiday season is prime time for keeping surprises quiet. But last season’s winner of the Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series has had to carry a humdinger of a secret, more challenging to keep than most.

The wrapping paper came off the 22-year-old driver’s plans for next season Wednesday morning at the NASCAR Hall of Fame as he joined veteran Timothy Peters on Red Horse Racing’s full-time lineup in the Camping World Truck Series. Shortly after pulling the cover off the No. 11 Toyota Tundra he’ll drive in 2015, Kennedy was finally able to exhale.

"It’s been tearing me apart, to be honest, not to say anything. Even my friends and family, I can’t tell," Kennedy said. "I wanted to keep it under wraps as much as possible. I feel like we did a good job, but it’s been tough. But to be here and to actually talk about it, being able to make this announcement helps so much more in helping find partners and crew chiefs, saying you’re in an established organization with a manufacturer with a very good reputation. I’m glad to be standing here with this awesome-looking truck."

In welcoming Kennedy, team owner Tom DeLoach said that the symbolism of the truck’s number was intentional. The two number ones represent the individual drivers, DeLoach said, and the box lining the numerals suggests the team’s solidarity. That the number happens to be among the most successful and winningest in NASCAR history was a happy coincidence.

"When you can get a guy that’s kind of like two brothers with a lot of the same personality traits, they can love each other but they’ll also push each other," DeLoach said. "That’s what I’m hoping to see this year. It kind of comes down to they’re both amazingly humble, they both try to please, they’re both very good listeners that will push their crew chiefs and want to get better. So I think both of them are going to really jell together."

Kennedy spent his rookie year with Turner Scott Motorsports last season, finishing ninth in the final series standings. His lone top-five came in the second race of the season, when he finished a career-best third place at Martinsville Speedway. Along the way, the great-grandson of NASCAR founder Bill France Sr. earned his degree from the University of Florida in May and fielded a team in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East for NASCAR Next driver Kenzie Ruston.

In making the next step in his budding stock-car racing career, he’ll work with Peters, a consistent contender who has notched at least one victory in each of the last six seasons.

"Like Timothy touched on a little bit, I think we have a lot of chemistry — talking at autograph sessions, being around each other — and that’s the beauty of the truck series," Kennedy said. "There’s not a ton of people and it’s all very close-knit. If you have an issue at the track, another team will be there to help you out. Red Horse has really been those guys."

Peters, 34, will return to his familiar No. 17 Tundra for the seventh consecutive season as a full-time driver. His long-running partnership with DeLoach has produced all eight of his victories thus far in his truck series career. Peters wound up fifth in the series standings last season, the brightest highlight coming in a stirring victory at Talladega Superspeedway in an overtime finish.

Peters said his longevity at Red Horse has been an overwhelming positive and that he hasn’t entertained the thought of leaving. In working to guide Kennedy’s growth next year, his job takes on a new, eagerly awaited challenge.

"It’s exciting to have a teammate come in who’s very passionate, wanting to win and wanting to run well," Peters said of Kennedy. "As a race car driver, that’s all of our goals is to go out there and get the best finish possible, but we want to bring home that trophy and the checkered flag. The chemistry that I see between he and I from the little bit of time we’ve spent is going to be very powerful when we break out for Speedweeks in Daytona and throughout the 23-race schedule."

The lineup announcement leaves German Quiroga, a Red Horse driver the last two seasons, as the odd man out for the Mooresville, North Carolina-based team. DeLoach said that he has all the equipment and resources for fielding a third truck in select events, but that sponsorship is still needed. The 67-year-old team owner said that Quiroga’s two main backers — Net10 and Otterbox — had informed the team that they would not participate in the truck series next season.

The 34-year-old Mexico native was sixth in the series standings last year, finishing second twice in a quest for his first victory in a NASCAR national series.

"Unfortunately, it’s one of the hard, cold facts of this sport is that you have to have funds, and if they say they’re not participating, then all of a sudden the funding goes away," DeLoach said. "German’s still out looking for sponsorship, I still have an open seat, so we’re still looking. Right now, it would be disingenuous of me to tell you that something’s in place because I know it isn’t yet. But he’s working on it.

"He’s a great guy. I feel sorry about that because I think it was an opportunity. I wanted to be the first one to have a Hispanic driver to win a race. I would say we got him in position in at least four races this year that we could’ve won the race. It didn’t pan out that way, but we at least put him in position. As a race team, that’s all we can do. You’ve just got to get that last little bit."

DeLoach said Marcus Richmond would continue to serve as crew chief of Peters’ No. 17, and that he had narrowed down the search for Kennedy’s crew chief to a short list of candidates. DeLoach also said that Red Horse will partner next season with engine supplier Triad Racing Technologies, the engine builder that has powered ThorSport Racing driver Matt Crafton to back-to-back Camping World Truck Series championships the last two years.

Gaffney: ‘The NASCAR sponsorship has been a valuable investment for us’

RELATED: Successful collaboration strengthens sport for the future

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — Dec. 16, 2014 — Citing a need to focus more directly on its core business priorities, Sprint announced it has informed NASCAR it will not extend the title sponsorship of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series after the current agreement expires at the end of the 2016 season.

"We are proud of our association with NASCAR’s top series but have made the decision not to extend our sponsorship beyond the next two years," said Steve Gaffney, vice president-Marketing, Sprint. "As we look to the future, Sprint is focused on investing in maintaining a competitive edge and providing consumers with the best value in wireless.

"Sprint has long benefitted from the unprecedented level of brand integration available in NASCAR, and the passionate fan base that is the most loyal in sports. Without question, the NASCAR sponsorship property has been a valuable investment for us and will be for our successor."

Since the partnership began in 2004, Sprint has worked closely with NASCAR to bring many fan-friendly innovations to life, including the introduction of the FanView next generation scanner (2005), the creation of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile wireless application (2008) and the debut of Miss Sprint Cup (2007), an ambassador program that now has more than 1.5 million social media followers. The constant evolution of the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race pre-race show and the improvements to the Sprint Vision trackside programming also highlight Sprint’s portfolio of fan enhancements.

"We genuinely appreciate the fans, teams, drivers, tracks and media who have been so supportive and welcoming to us during these many race seasons," said Gaffney. "We look forward to our remaining time as sponsor of the Sprint Cup Series and eventually assisting with the transition to NASCAR’s next title partner."

The sponsorship extends back to 2004 when Nextel signed a 10-year partnership with NASCAR for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series. The name changed to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2008 as a result of the Nextel/Sprint corporate merger. At the conclusion of the first 10 years, Sprint extended the partnership an additional three years taking the contract through the end of the 2016 season.
