CORRECTIONAL OFFICER JAMES BAILEY
James Bailey, 33, of Pamplin, Va. is a Correctional Officer for the Virginia Department of Corrections.  During his 12-hour shifts, Bailey strives to keep felons off the streets in addition to providing a safe environment for the inmates inside the walls. As a public safety figure, Bailey puts his life on the line for others without hesitation. He was nominated by his loving wife, Angela, who believes correctional officers do not receive enough credit for the sacrifices they make every day. Bailey goes to work with the hope that he’ll make a difference in the lives of those he’s around and if he can help promote change he feels as though he’s accomplished something in his career.  Honoring his father as his personal hero, Bailey admires his hard work and tries to be the type of man he is. When his father suffered a heart attack in recent years, Bailey saved his life. Believing that each day is a blessing, he never takes life for granted and is thankful to have the opportunity to wake up and start a new day. An avid race fan, Bailey enjoys attending NASCAR races in his free time, especially watching his favorite driver Denny Hamlin, along with riding his Harley.

FIRE WARDEN BRYCE BOYER

Bryce Boyer, 49, from Wanship, Utah, has been the Summit County Utah Fire Warden for the past 11 years. When a devastating wildfire broke out near Rockport State Park, Boyer took the lead as incident commander and worked endlessly to suppress the fire. Boyer and his teams were able to contain the fire after it burned over 1,400 acres and destroyed 15 structures. In addition to fighting fires like these, he also works to organize and train fire personnel on fire tactics and safety, volunteers with the North Summit, South Summit, and Park City Fire District and as an emergency medical first responder – all in his spare time. Even though he has been nominated for Fire Warden of the Year three times, Boyer doesn’t fight fire for awards and recognition but does his job “to protect the county residents as much as possible.” As a finalist, Boyer is most excited to see his favorite NASCAR driver, Tony Stewart, on race day and to have the opportunity to tell people living in urban areas the importance of preparing for fires.

BRAIN INJURY AWARENESS ADVOCATE TARA HULETT
Tara Hulett, 32, of Albany, N.Y., works within her community to spread awareness of traumatic brain injuries in her father’s memory.  In 2008, her father Kenneth Coons, an outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish, was struck by a car as he was crossing the street to check out a new fishing spot. Kenneth suffered from a traumatic brain injury from the accident and spent weeks in primary and rehabilitation hospitals. This tragic incident inspired Hulett to honor her father by making others aware of brain injuries. She has worked with the Mayor of Albany to create Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness Day on August 25, Kenneth’s birthday, beginning in 2008. She also started Fishing for Hope, a Facebook page with over 400 followers that helps inform people about traumatic brain injuries, and Grief Connect, a Facebook page to assist others in dealing with grief. In addition to bringing attention to brain injuries in her community, Hulett continually works with the Brain Injury Association of New York. Kenneth passed away in 2011 after being suddenly diagnosed with leukemia. Hulett and her family continue to honor his memory by participating in the Light the Night walk each year, collecting stuffed animals and donating them to the Leukemia Society, and collecting books to give to the Albany Tulip Queens Literacy campaign to give back to the Mayor for all he’s done to remember Kenneth.

UNITED STATES ARMY VETERAN JOHN WAYNE WALDING
John Wayne Walding, 32, of Little Elm, Texas, served in the United States Army for 12 years with seven of those years being in the 3rd Special Forces Group, completing tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. While overseas in 2008, Walding was involved in a fire fight during a mission to capture a high value target, during which he lost his lower right leg. After recovering from his injury, Walding was the first amputee to graduate Special Forces school. He completed the 2009 Boston Marathon and Army 10 miler, utilizing a hand cycle, within a year of the accident. Some of Walding’s awards and badges include the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Infantry Badge. Walding was honored to be nominated by his brother, as he considers it humbling validation each time someone hears about what he’s done for his country. One of Walding’s missions in life is to pass his torch on to the person behind him in an effort to help his fellow service men and women in the form of guidance. He helps former military members by employing them or providing direction to find their “North Star”, what Walding describes as their meaning in life after active duty service.  A big NASCAR fan, Walding has never had the opportunity to go to a race and looks forward to attending the “Your Hero’s Name Here” 400 in July.

UNITED STATES AIR FORCE VETERAN TYLER WHISENHUNT
Tyler Whisenhunt, 28, of Gentry, Ark., served his country as a member of the United States Air Force 307th REDHORSE for six years beginning as an Airman First Class and making Technical Sergeant before being honorably discharged in 2013. Whisenhunt was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2007 to 2008 as lead vehicle operator of 81 missions, totaling 4,006 miles, which led to exposure of multiple combat encounters. One particular incident Whisenhunt suspected copper wires along the road that led to an IED. Four fellow Airmen were dismounted in proximity to the bomb and Whisenhunt aided in getting Airmen to safety inside the Humvee before the bomb detonated on the vehicle.  Lucky to survive the blast, this tragic event inspired him to create and build armor for Humvees to prevent other Servicemen and Women from being injured. In addition, he put his engineering abilities to work to design and build protective shields for 5 remote control IED countermeasure systems, improving convoy IED defeat measures for 32 people. While deployed, Whisenhunt received a guitar as a gift and with the help of a team member he learned to play. The guitar became a staple item on missions, strapped to the top of the Humvee, it went everywhere with him and still enjoys playing that acoustic today. After he finished his tour in Iraq, Whisenhunt earned a four-year degree in Construction Management and worked his way into a Field Superintendent role at Nabholz Construction Services. In his free time, Whisenhunt enjoys sports, hunting, fishing and being with his family – his wife Amanda and two young daughters. On race days, he likes watching his favorite driver Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Points leader has runner-up finishes in two of last three races

RELATED: Play NASCAR Fantasy Live | Sign up for RaceView today

Jeff Gordon led the most laps Saturday night at Richmond International Raceway, securing his second runner-up finish in the last three events. The show of steady results has helped him maintain the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points lead for that three-race span, but it’s something he’d trade for a taste of Victory Lane.

Gordon’s performance — both at Richmond and at virtually every other track this season — hints at the notion that his 2014 win column may soon have one or more victories in the ledger. He’s led multiple laps in four of the last five races, suggesting that his chances of all but securing an automatic berth in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup playoffs under this year’s new postseason format are growing stronger by the week.

"I mean, as good as we’re running, I definitely feel like we can win races just about anywhere that we go, and if we continue to perform like this, we are going to win," Gordon said Saturday night after being out front for 173 of 400 laps in the Toyota Owners 400. "That’s how you win. I mean, yeah, there’s sometimes when you just pick the right pit strategy. There’s other times you get a good restart, and then there’s times when you just go and outrun them. I’ll take outrunning them more times than any because I think that’s when the multiple wins are going to come.

"You’re right, I mean, normally I’d be ecstatic with leading the points and where we’re at and consistency, but right now those wins are just so important. I mean, I’d rather be 12th in points right now with three wins than be leading the points."

Instead, Gordon and a frenzied pack that included eventual combatants Matt Kenseth and Brad Keselowski watched Joey Logano squirt away to his second victory of the year, sealing his Chase fate. In the series’ preceding race at Darlington Raceway, Kevin Harvick also became a two-time winner, snapping a seven-race streak of unique faces in Victory Lane to start the season.

The amplified emphasis on winning this season has moved Logano (sixth in Sprint Cup points) and Harvick (20th) to the head of the championship-eligible class among automatic qualifiers for the Chase. It’s an enviable postseason spot — one that Gordon feels is within reach, given the right mix of late-race circumstances.

"Any time you’re running this good consistently week in, week out on all different types of race tracks, it gives you confidence as a driver, as a team," Gordon said, "but you also know especially this year more than ever, you’ve got to go close that out. If you’re going to lead that many laps, have that good a car, you’ve got to go close it out and you’ve got to get the win. So this confidence will build if we keep running like this, but eventually it can also fall off if we don’t put a win or two together with that."

Gordon’s No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet has finished no worse than 13th all year, and his tally of seven top-10 finishes in nine races is tied for the best in the series this season with Kenseth, who ranks second in Sprint Cup standings, just five points back.

Those stats, combined with Gordon’s peerless average finish of 6.8 this season, hint at bigger things to come for the four-time series champion.

"It’s frustrating to not win," Gordon said, "but also each time we run this good, it builds more confidence and momentum that we’re going to get that win soon."

Dale Jr. has nine top-two finishes on NASCAR’s longest track

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has a lot of fond memories at Talladega Superspeedway heading into Sunday’s Aaron’s 499 Sprint Cup Series race. Last October’s second-place finish to Jamie McMurray was a reminder of Earnhardt Jr.’s supremacy on the 2.66-mile tri-oval course roughly a decade ago. From 2001 through 2004, Earnhardt Jr. won five out of the seven races at Talladega and placed second in the other two. His four consecutive wins (2001-03) remain a track record. In 28 career starts at Talladega, Earnhardt Jr. has nine top-two finishes and 14 top-10s.

Gordon finishes second after leading 173 laps

Toyota Owners 400 info: Results | Updated standings

RICHMOND, Va. — Joey Logano was penciled into a spot in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. Now you can write his name in indelible ink.

Capitalizing on beating and banging among competitors in front of him during the final nine-lap run, Logano surged from the fifth starting spot on the final restart to his second victory of the season in Saturday night’s Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond International Raceway.

Logano’s victory was his first at Richmond and the fifth of his career. Jeff Gordon came home second and retained the series lead by five points over Matt Kenseth, who ran fifth after tangling with fourth-place finisher Brad Keselowski while battling for the win in the closing laps.

On fresh tires after a late pit stop, Kyle Busch drove from 16th to third in the final run.

It was a race that had everything, from a spin by polesitter Kyle Larson in the first corner of the first lap (after contact from Clint Bowyer’s Toyota), to right-side tires that corded under stress and turned the wheels into flame throwers, to fiery tempers that continued after the checkered flag.

Keselowski and Kenseth swapped sheet metal and exchanged pleasantries on the cool-down lap. Nineteenth-place finisher Casey Mears shoved 18th-place Marcos Ambrose after the race — a carryover from a late racing incident — and in return took a right hook that wobbled him.

Logano, on the other hand, could barely contain his elation as he climbed from his car in Victory Lane.

"I had a terrible restart the one before the last one (on Lap 382), and then we had a good one (on the final restart on lap 392), but the 88 (Dale Earnhardt Jr.) in front of me didn’t have the best, and once we started racing there were three cars in front of me and I thought I had a shot still," Logano said. "The 20 (Kenseth) started blocking the top because the 2 car (Keselowski) was so fast up top for the first 10 laps of a run, and eventually I had enough room to turn up underneath him and get enough clean air on the car to take off.

"This isn’t a very good race track for me in the past, but we had a really good Shell Pennzoil Ford today, and we were able to put it in Victory Lane. This is so cool to win two races already this season, and it’s just going to be one heck of a season, and I can’t wait to get to the race track next week."

Earnhardt, who finished seventh after experiencing late brake problems, won a race off pit road under caution for Ricky Stenhouse Jr.’s fiery right front tire and led the field to green on Lap 305. One lap later, however, Logano passed Earnhardt for the top spot and pulled out to a lead of more than a half-second, with Penske teammate Keselowski in tow.

But Gordon won a drag race against Keselowski through Turns 3 and 4 to grab the second spot on Lap 332. Six laps later, Gordon passed Logano for the lead as the No. 22 Ford began to fade.

During that green-flag run, however, Kenseth began to assert himself, driving from sixth on the Lap 305 restart to the lead on Lap 362. Five laps after Kenseth wrested the top spot from Gordon, Jimmie Johnson’s tire issue in Turn 2 caused seventh caution and brought the field to pit road for fresh rubber.

Kenseth was first out of the pits for a restart on Lap 367, but on the restart lap, Denny Hamlin spun in Turn 3 to bring out caution No. 8. After two more cautions, Logano came from fifth to first after the final restart to win the race.

After the checkered flag, Keselowski was quick to express his displeasure with Kenseth.

"The 20 car ran me off the race track, so I made sure to give him a bump, and that was what Joey needed to win the race," Keselowski said. "I’m happy for his team and everybody at Team Penske. I wish it could have been us, but that was the way it goes."

For his part, Kenseth made no apologies for trying to win the race.

"He was mad because I ran into him a little bit getting into (Turn) 3, but we’re going for the win," Kenseth said. "I ran him up to the third groove or so, but I’ve witnessed him racing that way a lot, like I think he did to Jimmie (Johnson) at Texas a few years ago.

"I thought once we got to the straightaway I left him enough room, unless I wasn’t clear; I need to re-watch it. I guess he’s upset about that, and we were all going for the win. That’s what we’re supposed to be doing."

Notes: AJ Allmendinger posted a season-best sixth-place finish. … Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition, said the sanctioning body would review the Mears/Ambrose incident during the week but indicated he didn’t think it was anything “too severe."

Delayed race ends early Saturday morning

RICHMOND, Va. — As soon as Kevin Harvick took the lead in Friday night’s ToyotaCare 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Richmond International Raceway, it was over.

Harvick passed polesitter Brian Scott for the top spot on Lap 48 of 250 and led all but one lap thereafter in cruising to a victory over JR Motorsports teammate Chase Elliott, who fell one position short in his bid to win three straight races.

In an event that was delayed more than three hours by rain, Harvick led 202 laps in posting his series-best seventh win at Richmond, his first of the season and the 41st of his career.

FULL SERIES COVERAGE

Kyle Busch ran third, followed by Kyle Larson and Scott. Elliott extended his series lead to 19 points over Regan Smith, who finished eighth.

The victory was the fourth in eight NNS races for JR Motorsports and the first 1-2 finish for the organization. Harvick credited his teammate for pushing him.

"Honestly, Chase is a good kid, and he knows how to drive a race car," Harvick said. "He pushes us to be better by trying different things (from what we’ve been doing) through the years. The groove getting into Turn 1 — I had to change my groove tonight and change my car because it was different.

"He’s as good as they get and a lot of fun to be around."

Elliott, however, chided himself for not giving Harvick more of a battle after a restart on Lap 204.

"We were just a little tight right in the middle of the corner," Elliott said. "I think he just outdrove me a little bit. Honestly, I felt like some of it was me. I just let him get a little too far out in front of me there on the first few laps.

"I’ve just got to get up on the wheel a little harder the next time we’re in that situation."

During a green-flag run that lasted 104 laps after a competition caution called on Lap 41, Harvick built a lead of more than eight seconds, an advantage that was reduced to slightly more than 4 seconds after a long cycle of green-flag pit stops.

A caution on Lap 151 for debris in Turn 4, however, reset the field and gave all lead-lap cars (15 at the time) the chance to come to pit road for tires and fuel. First out of the pit after the stops, Harvick led the field to green on Lap 162 with Elliott second and Scott third.

Harvick pulled away after the restart, with Elliott in close pursuit, and those two drivers ran less than a half-second apart until contact from Ryan Reed‘s Ford sent Dylan Kwasniewski‘s Chevrolet into the Turn 4 wall to bring out the fourth caution of the night.

Harvick and Elliott were 1-2 off pit road for a restart on Lap 197, and though another quick caution on the restart lap — when Smith tangled with Elliott Sadler in Turn 2 — slowed the field for the fifth time, Harvick was just as dominant after a restart on Lap 204.

Gradually, Harvick pulled away from his teammate during the final 47-lap green-flag run and arrived at the finish line 2.069 seconds ahead of Elliott.

Video shows Ambrose’s punch hitting Mears in the face

MORE: Full race results

RICHMOND, Va. — A NASCAR official said late Saturday night that it would review video of a post-race altercation between Sprint Cup Series drivers Marcos Ambrose and Casey Mears in the Richmond International Raceway garage area in the minutes immediately following the Toyota Owners 400.

Video shows Ambrose and Mears having an animated discussion outside the line-up of team haulers in the garage. After talking to one another, Mears seems to grab Ambrose from the back and push him away when the Australian stops and throws a punch that hits Mears in the face.

In the video – obviously shot from a distance — Mears appears to put his hand on his left eye and move toward Ambrose before crew members from another team stepped in, separated the two and pulled Ambrose away into a large group of crew members when it also looks as if someone in the crowd throws a punch at Ambrose.

Team members from Ambrose’s Richard Petty Motorsports team and Mears’ Germain Racing team said the drivers immediately left the track.

Mears did make a brief comment on Twitter about the race on Saturday night.

NASCAR Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton told reporters later that upon initial review the incident didn’t look like it "was anything too severe.’" He said he hadn’t spoken with either of the drivers about it yet.

"We’re just taking a look at it. …  looking at the video and it doesn’t seem to be much, but we’ll take our time Monday and Tuesday and look at it some more," Pemberton said.

"We’ll get all the footage we can and look at it and see what happens from there.

"There might be more to it than that (a punch) so we have to take our time and look at everything.

"Sometimes there’s things out there for us to look at that we don’t have available right now, so to make any statement or call on it right now would be a waste of everybody’s time.

"It was good hard racing tonight and probably some of the best racing we’ve seen at Richmond. A lot went into it, a lot of good lead changes and people were being aggressive and that’s what people like to see, good hard racing."
