Kyle Busch topped the final round of group qualifying to take the Coors Light Pole Award on Friday at Darlington Raceway.

Busch snuck ahead of NASCAR Nationwide Series rookie and points leader Chase Elliott late with a best speed of 173.681 mph, recorded on his second of two laps around the egg-shaped circuit. It was just fast enough to best Elliott’s No. 9 JRM Chevrolet, which ran a lap at a 173.448 clip. Busch’s teammate Matt Kenseth (173.106 mph) will start third alongside Kevin Harvick (171.662).

Ty Dillon (171.249) and Chris Buescher (170.922) fill out the remaining spots in the first three rows.

Kyle Larson will likely have to switch to a backup car after getting his No. 42 Chevrolet into the wall in the final round of qualifying.

Brendan Gaughan, Joey Logano, Dylan Kwasniewski, Ryan Reed and James Buescher were all eliminated after the second round.

Jeffrey Earnhardt was eliminated after the first round of qualifying. He will start 26th.

The VFW Sport Clips Help a Hero 200 gets underway Friday night at 8 p.m. on ESPN2. TV coverage begins at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Newman topped the final session with a high speed of 179.167 mph

SPRINT CUP SERIES PRACTICE 1 | RESULTS

Kevin Harvick topped the first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice at Darlington Raceway on Friday.

Harvick posted a high speed of 177.665 mph.

Second fastest was Clint Bowyer at 176.746 mph.

Jimmie Johnson, Brad Keselowski and Jeff Gordon rounded out the top five.

Six drivers earned Darlington Stripes, scraping the wall at the historic track.

Sunoco Rookie of the Year contenders Alex Bowman, Austin Dillon and Kyle Larson along with last year’s Sunoco Rookie of the year Ricky Stenhouse Jr. found the fence along with veterans Marcos Ambrose and Martin Truex Jr.

"Well, Kyle (Larson) came over and asked, ‘Where did you hit’? I said off Turn 2," Dillon said. "He said, ‘Me too.’ I said, ‘Did you try you try to come off the wall and make it turn?’ He said exact same thing. So we are just learning, I guess."

Of the six drivers who earned stripes in the first practice session, Larson is the only one who is going to a backup car.

SPRINT CUP SERIES PRACTICE 2 | RESULTS

Ryan Newman topped the final Sprint Cup Series practice at Darlington Raceway with a speed of 179.167 mph.

Newman was eighth fastest in the series’ opening practice session on Friday.

Second fastest in the final session was Marcos Ambrose, posting a speed of 178.978 mph.

Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch and Joey Logano rounded out the top five.

Kevin Harvick, who led the first practice, was 29th fastest in the final session.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coors Light Pole Qualifying session will tonight at 6:10 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1.

Both Team Penske drivers are seeking their first Sprint Cup Series win at Darlington

RELATED: Play NASCAR Fantasy Live | Sign up for RaceView today

DARLINGTON, S.C. – Joey Logano describes Darlington Raceway as a “hit or miss” track, and that’s about as descriptive as it gets here at the legendary speedway.

Early in Friday’s first practice for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams, two cars had already made contact with the wall in separate incidents, earning what’s long been termed a “Darlington stripe.”

Sunoco Rookie of the Year contenders Austin Dillon and Kyle Larson were the drivers, both are rookies, and the damage varied – Dillon’s car was deemed repairable; Larson’s was not. Before the practice was done, they were joined in the garage by another rookie, Alex Bowman, last year’s rookie of the year Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and veterans Marcos Ambrose and Martin Truex Jr.

“I came here my rookie year and led a lot of laps and finished ninth,” Logano said Friday morning. “It was kind of a surprising day for me because I didn’t think I would run well here and this place really doesn’t cater to rookies very often. At that point, it was my best race in a Sprint Cup car.”

The Team Penske driver, now 23, has excelled elsewhere – he has four career Cup wins – but the track that goes by the nicknames “Too Tough to Tame” and “Lady in Black” has proven to be a something of a conundrum. His 10th-place finish in 2012 has been his only other top-10 here in five attempts. The three others were 22nd or worse.

He does, however, have one Nationwide Series win on the 1.366-mile track.

“Ever since (2009) I have been kind of hit or miss (here),” he said. “I would have a good race, then a bad race and back and forth. I think we learned a lot from last year … I feel both our cars missed it … and we learned from that. We have a different package and different stuff and hopefully we are better this time.”

Teammate Brad Keselowski, the 2012 Cup champion, is also seeking his first Darlington victory. Neither driver finished inside the top 20 in last year’s race.

Now, both already have one win heading into Saturday night’s Bojangles’ Southern 500. Keselowski notched his victory at Las Vegas while Logano scored just five days ago in Texas

That early success could bode well for the pair.

“When you get that win, especially with both Team Penske cars getting wins early in the year, you are able to switch your focus to Chase stuff, whether that is tests or new specs coming down the line,” Logano said. “Don’t get me wrong, we aren’t trying to not win this weekend and I feel like we will have another good piece here at Darlington and the car will have good speed.

“It is cool to see your name on the car with the winner sticker next to it. That is a good sign. It is nice to have both our cars in and we can focus in this weekend and kind of have that distraction of needing to win and all the pressure that comes with that relieved a little bit.”

Fast testing at Michigan helps Dale Jr. get over an early-exit at Texas

RELATED: Play NASCAR Fantasy Live | Sign up for RaceView today

DARLINGTON, S.C. — A test session at Michigan helped sooth the wounds of Texas, Dale Earnhardt Jr. said Friday at Darlington.

That’s a lot of mileage logged for an incident that occurred barely a dozen laps into Monday’s rain-delayed NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.

Earnhardt Jr. clipped the grass just off the apron at Texas Motor Speedway, hard enough that the splitter on his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet dug into the ground. His car then shot across the track where it struck the wall and erupted in flames.

The incident, which took place just after the field had gone green for the first time due to damp track conditions, resulted in a 43rd-place finish. It also affected the efforts of teammate Jimmie Johnson, whose car was struck by debris that damaged his car’s windshield and opened a hole in the front of the No. 48 entry.

After a win to open the season, three consecutive top-five finishes and only a week after reassuming the points lead, the Texas miscue was disheartening for the 39-year-old Earnhardt Jr.

A day later, however, he and his team were one of several taking part in a two-day Goodyear tire test at Michigan International Speedway.

"Just being able to get back in the car and test at Michigan was a big help for me to get past it and to get focused on the next race," he said before practice at Darlington.

"This (Southern 500) is a tough event … we’ve got some decent runs here but we haven’t really come here and had a race that we thought we lost.

"This is going to be a tough place to come rebound, but we are going to give it our best. I’m just glad to be back at the track, go ahead and get a race or two in the bank and put it behind us."

Fans offered support via Twitter in the aftermath of the Texas incident, but Earnhardt Jr., new to the social media platform this year, said his busy schedule forced him to scale back his participation during the week.

"I guess Twitter can be a help in a situation like that," he said. "I mean my fans certainly have your back and tell you to brush it off, don’t worry about it. I’m sure there are some people on there saying the opposite, but I didn’t see many of those or any of those.

"There is a positive and a negative to everything. I didn’t really spend a lot of time on Twitter this week because we were working at Michigan. We had some things to do Thursday. Twitter is a bit of a playground and I don’t want to horse around if we are not doing good. I don’t want to be on there goofing off and making light of the situation because it was a frustrating mistake. It was something I don’t take very lightly."

Now sixth in points, Earnhardt Jr. is one of several drivers still searching for their first career Darlington win. Sprint Cup teams practice and qualify here today, with tomorrow’s Bojangles’ Southern 500 scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. ET start. FOX will provide live, flag-to-flag coverage of the event.

Veteran hopes to become latest JGR driver to visit Victory Lane at Darlington

RELATED: Play NASCAR Fantasy Live

As the only full-time NASCAR Nationwide Series driver in Joe Gibbs Racing’s stable, Elliott Sadler has high expectations for Friday night’s VFW Sport Clips Help A Hero 200 (8 p.m. ET on ESPN2) at Darlington Raceway.

Sadler has performed well through the first six races of 2014, compiling four top 10s and one pole. His best outings are a pair of fifth-places finishes (Daytona, Auto Club).

Although he’s never won at the 1.366-mile egg-shaped oval, his best result came last season when he finished runner-up to JGR teammate Kyle Busch, who started on the pole. Starting position is of the utmost importance at a track like Darlington Raceway where the narrow straightaways and tight turns place a premium on passing.

"If there’s anywhere qualifying will be important it’s definitely here this weekend," said Sadler, who sits fourth in the standings, 16 points behind leader Chase Elliott. "It’s a short race. There’s no time for mistakes."

Thirteen Nationwide races at the track have been won from the pole, more than any other spot on the starting grid. Five of the last eight races have been won from the pole, all by Sadler’s JGR teammates. In all, seven of the last eight races have been won by JGR drivers: Denny Hamlin (three), Kyle Busch (two), Tony Stewart (one) and Joey Logano (one).

Current JGR driver Matt Kenseth won the eighth race while driving for Roush Fenway Racing. He also won the race immediately prior to the seven-of-eight stretch.

Kenseth and Busch will join Sadler in JGR’s three entries Friday night at Darlington, where Sadler hopes to continue the trend and become the next JGR driver to visit Victory Lane.

Biffle, Gordon, Johnson seek to extend consecutive win streak to make Chase

RELATED: Play NASCAR Fantasy Live | Sign up for RaceView today

As the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads to Darlington Raceway for its final race before the first off-weekend of the season, the series looks for its eighth different winner of 2014.

The top three drivers on the active winner’s list at the track that is known as Too Tough to Tame are winless this year. Also, among the seven who have visited Victory Lane this season, only Kyle Busch has a Sprint Cup win at Darlington.

As the streak seeks to equal or surpass the nine wins to start 2003 or the 10 to start 2000, here are five drivers to watch in the Bojangles’ Southern 500 (Saturday, 6:30 p.m. ET, FOX).

Greg Biffle

One of only three active drivers with multiple wins at Darlington, Biffle is at home at the track, where he’s won two Cup races. Known as a "wheel man" who wrangles loose race cars, Biffle will be in his element this weekend, wearing a Darlington stripe on the side of his car like a badge of honor. In the Loop Data era (2005-present), no driver has led more laps (632), had a higher percentage of laps led (19.1 percent) or had more Fastest Laps Run (286) than Biffle. That last stat is defined as "number of laps where driver had the fastest speed on the lap," and it all adds up to the third-best Driver Rating (107.5) at the track. In the case of the No. 16 car, loose really is fast.

Jeff Gordon

Among active drivers, Gordon is the Dean of Darlington with the most wins (seven), laps led (1,736) and best average start (6.758). As NASCAR returns to its roots at its oldest superspeedway — a track over a mile — the four-time series champion has returned to the points lead for the first time in nearly five years, and he’s new school enough to be tops in Driver Rating among all drivers at 111.8. He has the most laps in the top 15 (2,982) for a 90.1 percentage and the highest percentage of Quality Passes (80.7 percent) as he passes cars in the top 15 under the green flag more often than not. He also has the best Average Running Position (8.1) and best Average Green Flag Speed (160.130 mph) through the nine races in the Loop Data era.

Denny Hamlin

In his first career NASCAR Nationwide Series race in 2004, Hamlin turned heads at Darlington, starting 27th and finishing eighth in the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 18 car. When he completed the Nationwide-Cup sweep at Darlington in 2010, he coined the phrase "All we do is win" after crossing the start/finish line in the 2010 Southern 500. While he doesn’t win every race at the Track Too Tough to Tame, he does have the best average finish among active drivers at 5.375. In the Loop Data era, Hamlin holds the best average finish (5.4), and he has four top-fives and seven-top 10s to go with his win. His 108.9 Driver Rating is second-best as is his Average Running Position (8.6).

Jimmie Johnson

Second-best among active drivers with three wins and an 8.8 average finish, Johnson is tied with Biffle for the third-best Driver Rating at 107.5. The six-time series champion won this race two years ago for Hendrick Motorsports’ 200th victory and Rick Hendrick’s 14th win at Darlington, the most in series history. Ten years ago, Johnson completed the 10th and final season sweep of the races at Darlington as the venue returned to one race a year. Johnson is second only to Gordon in Average Green Flag Speed (160.069 mph) and third in laps in the top 15 (2,504 for 75.6 percent).

Martin Truex Jr.

Returning to the scene of Furniture Row Racing’s first and only win in 2011, Truex Jr. hopes to return the team to Victory Lane. At Darlington, he has the third-best average finish among active drivers (11.4), a top-10 Driver Rating (94.8) and a best finish of fifth in 2012. In eight career starts, he only has one finish outside of the top 14, a 19th in 2010, and he’s completed all but one lap — 2,939 out of 2,940 so it makes sense that he considers it to be "probably my favorite track on the whole circuit." A win on Saturday night could go a long way in cementing his love for The Lady in Black.

Kyle Busch second-fastest in both Darlington sessions

RELATED: Full practice results

Joey Logano, just three days removed from his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory of the season, and rookie Chris Buescher set the pace in NASCAR Nationwide Series practice sessions Thursday afternoon at Darlington Raceway.

Logano — scheduled to make just his second Nationwide Series start of the season in Friday night’s VFW Sport Clips Help a Hero 200 (8 p.m. ET, ESPN2) — turned a fast lap of 169.380 mph in the No. 22 Team Penske Ford in the hourlong opening session. Logano prevailed on the 1.366-mile track in 2012 for his only Darlington victory.

Buescher, in the No. 60 Roush Fenway Racing Ford, went even faster in leading the 90-minute final practice, lapping the historic track at a speed of 170.365 mph. He’ll be making just his 15th career Nationwide start in Friday’s 200-miler.

Kyle Busch, the defending race winner and a two-time pole starter at Darlington in the Nationwide Series, was second-fastest in both practice sessions. He ran 168.700 mph in the No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota in the opening session and turned in a consistent 168.758 mph lap in the final practice.

Sprint Cup rookie phenom Kyle Larson (168.613 mph) was third-fastest in opening practice in the No. 42 Turner Scott Motorsports Chevrolet. Buescher (168.371) and Dakoda Armstrong (168.301) completed the top five.

In final practice, rookie Ty Dillon (168.469 mph) was third-fastest in the No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet. Trevor Bayne (168.296) and rookie points leader Chase Elliott (168.117), last week’s breakthrough winner in the Nationwide Series, filled out the top five in final preparation.

Rookie Dylan Kwasniewski, a NASCAR Next class member, endured an eventful day in his first official visit to Darlington. After scraping the wall with the right side of his No. 31 Turner Scott Motorsports Chevrolet in the opening session, his team was forced to change engines during the second session, bringing a premature end to his day.

Coors Light Pole Qualifying for the series is scheduled for Friday at 4:05 p.m. ET.
