42nd-place finish just the latest setback for Stewart-Haas Racing driver

Kevin Harvick exited Monday’s Duck Commander 500 after just 28 laps of the scheduled 334-lap event due to a blown engine in his No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet.

The race, originally scheduled for Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway, was delayed one day due to inclement weather.

"Something happened with the engine right after that restart," Harvick said. "The Jimmy John’s Chevrolet SS was really fast. It’s frustrating. I don’t know what else I can say. I didn’t get any indication that anything was going wrong. Hendrick engines are among the fastest and most reliable engines in the garage. We’ll take it back to the shop and figure out what happened. But that’s a disappointing end to the day."

The resulting 42nd-place finish was the latest setback for the veteran driver, who won earlier this year at Phoenix International Raceway but has battled mechanical problems of various sorts in several of this year’s first seven NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events.

Following his Phoenix win, Harvick was saddled with a 41st-place finish the following week in Las Vegas due to a left front hub failure.

At Bristol, it was a cut oil line late in the race resulted in a 39th-place finish.

Tire problems, which impacted several teams at Auto Club Speedway, derailed Harvick as well, and left him 36th at day’s end.

Although he scored a seventh-place finish at Martinsville, Harvick and his team had their share of issues there as well — one of two chains connected to the rear tires broke and resulted slower pit stops and a loss of track position each time Harvick came onto pit road.

Crew chief Rodney Childers said if there has been a bright spot, besides the Phoenix win, it was that "we’ve been fast."

"We’ve been fast enough to win every race this year," Childers told NASCAR.com on April 1. "We were fortunate enough to win one of them. We could have already won four races if we hadn’t made mistakes and stuff like that.

"There aren’t too many people that ever have a shot at winning four races in a year. If we can do that this early in the season, I’m sure we can keep building up, making our cars better."

Harvick entered Monday’s race 25th in points. To be eligible for one of the 16 spots available in this year’s Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, a driver must be 30th or higher in the points standings following the season’s 26th race.

"We’ve got to get ourselves built back up," Childers said. "… I don’t worry about it with (Kevin) because he’s a good enough driver and we’re a good enough team that we can win another race, but you don’t ever know. You may win another one and you may not. You’ve got to make sure you’ve got some points to make sure you’re in there."

Despite poor qualifying, Busch, Kenseth finish in top 10; Hamlin takes 13th

RELATED: Play NASCAR Fantasy Live | Sign up for RaceView today

FORT WORTH, Texas — Joe Gibbs Racing drivers Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth weren’t where they wanted to be on Sunday. Good thing the Duck Commander 500 was delayed until Monday.

By the end of a race that went six laps past its advertised distance, those two JGR Toyota Camrys had rallied for top-10 finishes at a track where both drivers excel. And because Busch and Kenseth are so solid here in the Lone Star State, it magnified their poor qualifying efforts in which neither the No. 18 of Busch nor the No. 20 advanced past Saturday’s first round of multicar qualifying.

Busch, last year’s winner, crossed the start/finish line third after starting 29th. Kenseth rallied for a seventh-place effort — his third consecutive top-10 — despite starting 26th. Denny Hamlin, who advanced to the final round of group qualifying, was 13th.

"Matt struggled early but was able to make some good changes and got himself up to the top 10.  All in all, we (all) seemed to have some runs there in the top 10," Busch said after notching his second top-five in the past three races. "It was a good afternoon for us. At the end there, I chose four (tires) just because I absolutely killed my stuff about three laps prior to that caution coming out so I knew that was our only chance."

Busch was among the majority to make that tire decision on the final pit stop before the final green-white-caution ending. He restarted fifth, and used his position on the inside line to overpower Brian Vickers (fourth), Kyle Larson (fifth) and Greg Biffle (sixth) to grab third place.

Kenseth, meanwhile, spent the majority of the race outside of the top 10 and was on the high line during the majority of the early restarts. The 42-year-old also struggled with a changing track condition.

It was cloudy and cool when the race started, but the sun was out midway through, changing the temperature of the asphalt.

"We just didn’t qualify well and then we just really struggled," Kenseth said. "So, we just started — we were just really far off. We were really loose. We got a little bit better, but really nothing we could compete with."

Hamlin, meanwhile, was the lone JGR driver with a good starting spot on the grid — he came off sixth — yet the No. 11 finished worst among the three teammates.

He led twice for 20 laps, but was hampered by a pit-road speeding penalty. NASCAR Executive Vice President for Racing Operations Steve O’Donnell tweeted an image of the sanctioning body’s data that displays how fast a driver was going. The pit-road speed limit is 45 mph, and teams are allowed 5 mph grace. Hamlin’s No. 11 was measured at 50.03 mph at Lap 141.

It was the speeding penalty, which sent Hamlin back into the middle of the pack, that was his unraveling.

"Obviously, we had a great car at the beginning of the race," Hamlin said. "Once I got back in traffic, the car didn’t drive as good. Couldn’t make up any track position and the car took a long time to come in. Disappointed with that — we had a top-five car, just didn’t finish that well."

No, but it was a bounce-back day for JGR with results that closely resemble how the team ranks in the points standings. Through seven races, the organization is the lone team to have two drivers in the top five in Kenseth (second) and Busch (fifth).

All three of its drivers are currently in position to make the Chase field through seven races, too.

"We made some gains, definitely," Busch said. "We learned some things this week trying some different concepts. There are some guys definitely that are still steps ahead of us that we have to get better as a whole, as a group."

Drivers find creative ways to spend time waiting for race to start

RELATED: Rain postpones Duck Commander 500 | Play NASCAR Fantasy Live | Sign up for RaceView today

FORT WORTH, Texas — NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers say knowing well in advance that you’re going to be in an extended rain delay on race day doesn’t make the news any better.

But since Texas Motor Speedway‘s weather postponement is the fourth of the season’s first seven races and the first to extend a race weekend by an extra day, drivers say they are getting used to devising creative ways to pass time. Or not-so-creative ways.

While Kyle and Samantha Busch tried to figure out a way to work in a workout, food and television were more likely outlets in the garage.

Furniture Row Racing’s Martin Truex Jr. snacked on tacos and watched a movie. Kyle Larson went to Ricky Stenhouse Jr.‘s motorcoach to watch supercross and Formula One races with Stenhouse and Danica Patrick.

"I’m eating a big tray of leftover nachos," said JTG Daugherty Racing’s AJ Allmendinger, who said he was trying to stay patient, but especially eager to get on track this weekend.

"It is what it is, and we just have wait it out," said Allmendinger, who’s coming off a pair of top-11 finishes.

"The hardest thing for us was we struggled yesterday (in qualifying), just didn’t have the speed and now the track conditions are completely different so we want to see what we have."

"It’s different for everybody, but I really like the structure of waking up and knowing when your first appearance is and the driver meeting and then coming back and having lunch. I like the structure and during the rain delay you don’t really know.

"I’m just looking at the radar trying to figure out how long it will take to dry the track and when we can get out there."

"Part of the most frustrating part of the weather is looking at it and knowing a week ahead of time there’s 100 percent or 70 percent chance that the weather is coming.
