Reigning Cup champion tops charts in return to home stat; Busch, Dillon top NNS sessions

RELATED: Sprint Cup qualifying order

Cup Practice 1 | Full practice results

Reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson topped the opening practice leaderboard in his home state Friday at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.

Johnson’s best speed of 188.664 mph, achieved on the first of his seven laps, was enough to best a field of 43 cars.

A pair of Hendrick Motorsports teammates joined Johnson in the top five in Jeff Gordon (second, 188.511 mph) and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (fourth, 187.740 mph), while Clint Bowyer (third, 187.774) and Brad Keselowski (fifth, 187.003) completed the top five.

Last week’s winner at Bristol Motor Speedway, Carl Edwards, was 20th on the charts at 184.644 mph, while defending race-winner Kyle Busch (185.066 mph) was 13th.

Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano, who tangled on a last-lap push to the checkered flag in 2013 that resulted in a wreck, were 11th (185.214) and 22nd (184.398), respectively.

Austin Dillon, the highest rookie on the charts, was 17th at 184.838.

Midway through the session, Landon Cassill took major right side damage after spinning out and hitting the Turn 4 wall. His No. 40 Chevrolet caught on fire and had to be put out with fire extinguishers, but Cassill exited his car without injury. The practice was halted for an extended period while the track was cleaned.

Nationwide Practice 1 | Results

Defending race-winner Kyle Busch got out to a fast start in the weekend’s opening NASCAR Nationwide Series practice, topping the charts on Friday at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif.

Busch’s best speed of 174.157 mph was fast enough to top a trio of Sprint Cup Series drivers in Kevin Harvick (second, 173.519 mph), Joey Logano (third, 173.281 mph) and Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Matt Kenseth (fourth, 173.244 mph). Roush Fenway Racing driver and Nationwide regular Trevor Bayne (fifth, 172.678 mph) rounded out the top five.

Rookie Chase Elliott was sixth in the session at 172.616 mph, followed by fellow rookie Dylan Kwasniewski (172.509 mph) in seventh. Brian Scott (172.505 mph), David Ragan (172.191 mph) and Regan Smith (172.125 mph) finished in eighth through tenth respectively.

Nationwide Practice 2 | Results

Rookie Ty Dillon improved upon his showing in the second and final Nationwide Series practice of the day, besting a field of 38 cars at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. on Friday.

Dillon — who finished 11th the opening session with a speed of 172.101 mph — had the fastest speed by close to two full mph, beating fellow rookie Chase Elliott‘s 174.668 mph with his fast lap 176.462 mph.

Another rookie in James Buescher was next on the list at 174.224 mph, while a fourth rookie in Dylan Kwasniewski (173.302 mph) was fourth and Brian Scott (172.931 mph) completed the top five. Defending race-winner Kyle Busch (172.736 mph) was sixth after topping the first practice.

Sprint Cup Series regulars Joey Logano (172.513 mph) and Kevin Harvick (172.236 mph) were eighth and ninth, respectively, while Matt Kenseth (171.731 mph) was 11th.

NASCAR spokesperson: ‘A manual override switch got accidently tripped’

FONTANA, Calif. — NASCAR addressed this week the caution light malfunction at the end of last Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event at Bristol Motor Speedway, saying that the sanctioning body will take necessary steps to prevent a recurrence of the issue.

The caution lights flashed on in the late stages of Sunday’s Food City 500, creating confusion because the flag was not waving and no NASCAR officials signaled for a caution period from race control’s radio. The flag waved seconds later, just before a final rainstorm stopped the race with Carl Edwards in front as the eventual winner.

A post-race investigation of the final caution determined that someone had inadvertently brushed against a manual switch in the flagstand. The issue was addressed again in NASCAR’s weekly competition meeting in Concord, N.C.

"The caution (lights) system originates in race control," a NASCAR spokesperson said in a statement. "What happened at Bristol was that unfortunately, a manual override switch got accidently tripped. We will take the necessary steps with the race tracks to make sure that everything in the flagstand area is properly secured and protected. Please note that not all of the flagstands are alike and some tracks host different forms of motorsports."

Robin Pemberton, NASCAR’s vice president for competition and racing development, said Sunday that officials attempted to turn off the caution lights after they were initially displayed, but that the override switch prevented it.

Bayne currently sits one point behind leader Regan Smith

FONTANA, Calif. — Joe Gibbs Racing has shown plenty of speed early on in the NASCAR Nationwide Series season, but it’s nothing near the current track-specific stranglehold of nine straight Auto Club Speedway victories dating back to early 2008.

If other teams are playing catch-up with JGR, Trevor Bayne is among the drivers hoping to lead the charge in Saturday’s Treatmyclot.com 300 (5 p.m. ET, ESPN), the fifth race of the season in the Nationwide tour.

"We are going to have to get faster cars than them, I guess," Bayne said with a trademark grin Friday at the 2-mile track. "… It is frustrating when you lose to anybody. Whether it is a Sprint Cup driver or Nationwide driver, we want to be the best. I love racing against those guys and they are setting the bar high. We have to go after them. We aren’t sitting on our heels just hoping that something magically appears for something to make us faster some day."

Bayne ranks second in series standings, just one point behind leader Regan Smith, and has a perfect 4-for-4 mark in finishing in the top 10 this season. But the most he could muster Friday in describing his start to 2014 as an "OK season" so far.

Aside from his season-opening third-place result at Daytona International Speedway, he hasn’t quite been among the front-runners at the checkered flag, something he aims to fix in Fontana, where Kyle Busch has won six of the last nine Nationwide races as part of the overall JGR streak.

"The last three races I think we wanted to run a little better, obviously, seventh and eighth place finishes aren’t what we show up to do," Bayne said. "Phoenix, I thought we had a better car than that with the rain-shortened race. The last two, we were around an eighth-place car, which is where we finished. Hopefully this weekend we can figure out how to be better. Obviously we want to contend for top-fives every single weekend and I think we can do that."

If Bayne’s No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing team is to make the jump from top-10 finishes to top-fives, it will likely be the result of the growing chemistry with driver and team. Bayne said his pairing with new crew chief Chad Norris has paid dividends already and that the communication continues to improve, building upon their brief timetogether in 2011. He’s also gaining experience with spotter Jason Hedlesky, a Roush Fenway veteran who calls the race for Carl Edwards on the Sprint Cup side.

"I think that is a bonus for me this season, how good we already are communicating," Bayne said. "We just need to unload a little closer at these racetracks to beat those guys."

Thus far at Auto Club, he’s closer to that goal. Bayne recorded the fifth-fastest speed fresh off the hauler in the Nationwide Series’ first practice and the seventh in the final practice.

Finding speed early will help to set the table for Saturday morning’s Coors Light Pole Qualifying, but Bayne knows that the true test of 300 miles later in the afternoon will be managing tires and struggling for grip on the well-worn pavement and its finicky seams. It’s a challenge he accepts and anticipates.

"As you cross seams, you are going to lose handling. That is why the line moves up as the race goes on and you see guys running the top," Bayne said. "… I like that you can move around here, it makes the racing more fun."

Roush Fenway Racing driver looks to build off victory at Bristol

FONTANA, Calif. — One Bristol Motor Speedway victory and five days later, Carl Edwards didn’t sound like a driver who had locked up his fate for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup postseason. Then again, he didn’t sound like a driver dealing with a vast amount of uncertainty either.

His outlook was somewhere in the middle.

"The biggest thing it does is take pressure off, and allow us to go have more fun," Edwards said Friday at Auto Club Speedway. "It is nice to be able to race like that."

But even though this year’s new "win and you’re in" format means a regular-season victory virtually clinches a Chase berth, Edwards isn’t giving the accumulation of points short shrift.

"Of course. Mathematically we aren’t in the Chase," said Edwards, who jumped from a tie for sixth to third in the Sprint Cup Series standings after his first victory of the year. "If 26 guys win races then the points are going to be pretty important. We are aware of that. We aren’t going to go crazy right now. We are going to kind of see how things go for the next month or so and then once we really feel like we are locked in — the easiest way to lock ourselves in is to win this weekend, then we will be good. Once we are in that position, it will be completely pressure-free which will be really nice."

Edwards’ chances of winning in Sunday’s Auto Club 400 (3 p.m. ET, FOX) are as good as any driver in the 43-car field, based on his experience on two-mile tracks. Both Auto Club and sister track Michigan International Speedway have been prime locations for both himself and his Roush Fenway Racing team: Edwards has three Sprint Cup wins between the two similar speedways, and team owner Jack Roush has a combined 20 victories at Fontana and Michigan.

The end of Sunday’s race — the fifth in the series this season — will mean that Sprint Cup teams will have competed on all varieties of oval tracks on the schedule. For Edwards, the litmus test will be how his No. 99 Ford performs at Auto Club.

"I think we are optimistic, but also realize we were not fast at Vegas and everybody at Roush Fenway is taking that very seriously," said Edwards, who rallied to finish fifth in Sin City on March 9. "Last week was nice and (Roush Fenway general manager) Robbie Reiser pointed out that we have to enjoy these wins, even though we have this project on the side to get better at the 1.5-mile tracks, we do appreciate how well we ran at Bristol. … We feel like we still need to be better and this track is going to be a good place for us to start and work on things tomorrow and Sunday to be better at these big race tracks."

Horsepower and tire management on Auto Club’s will be key factors come Sunday, but Edwards said that aerodynamics will also be crucial, especially with the speeds the cars are registering on the speed traps heading into Turn 1. That in mind, Edwards will place a premium on keeping the sheet metal of his car clean and crumple-free through the weekend.

"I was looking at that radar display they have at the end of the front straightaway — 207 mph at the end of the front straightaway means there is an immense amount of aerodynamic influence on the race car," Edwards said. "I would say it is probably equal with the tires influence on getting the car around the track. It is hugely important here."

The characteristics are vastly different than Bristol, the .533-mile bullring where Edwards hoisted the winner’s trophy after a long, rain-delayed day in the Tennessee hills. Aside from the shot in the arm of standing in Victory Lane and the virtual safe haven as far as the Chase is concerned, Edwards won’t be able to transfer much to Sunday’s main event, mechanically speaking.

"We know Bristol is a stand-alone, very unique race track and we don’t think there is much carry-over," Edwards said. "It is huge from a team perspective that we were able to bring great cars there and all our Fords ran so well. It is a morale booster, but it won’t make our cars faster here in California. Our California package has to stand on its own."

Dillon, Elliott are currently tied for NNS Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors

RELATED: Nationwide Series standings

Pay close attention to the NASCAR Nationwide Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year standings. You may be looking into the future of NASCAR.

And right now there’s a tie in the rookie race that is as intriguing and compelling as they come.

With the series headed west to Auto Club Speedway for Saturday’s TreatMyClot.com 300 (5 p.m. ET on ESPN), Ty Dillon and Chase Elliott both have 51 points in the rookie standings. Dylan Kwasniewski is third, 14 points back.

Dillon started his first full-time season strong, finishing in the top 10 three times through the first four races. His best finish (sixth) came last week at Bristol. His lowest finish – a still solid 11th – was at Las Vegas.

Saturday’s race, however, presents a fresh challenge for the North Carolina driver.

"It’s a new place for me, I’ve never actually raced there – only just one test earlier this year in a Cup car," Dillon said. "I had a great test and had a lot of fun, definitely looking forward to the new challenge of a new race track and what the Nationwide Series will bring as far as a challenge there."

Fortunately for Dillon, he’s not the only rookie making his inaugural start in Fontana. Both Elliott and Kwasniewski have never made a national series start at the track.

Dillon, who took over the No. 3 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet from his older brother Austin, is third in points behind leader Regan Smith and Trevor Bayne.

Strong showing at Bristol has Stewart feeling good

RELATED: Play NASCAR Fantasy Live | Sign up for RaceView today

Being away from your job, no matter your profession, for 15 weeks can make it extremely difficult to get back in the swing of things upon your return.

When your job happens to be that of a full-time driver in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series returning to the race track after an extended absence can be even more difficult. In the case of three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart, who also had to tack on a three-month offseason to his 15 missed races before getting back into his No. 14 Chevrolet SS, the first three races of 2014 didn’t go exactly as he had hoped.

In the fourth race at Bristol Motor Speedway, however, Stewart was all smiles after finishing fourth. For the first time since breaking his leg in a sprint car accident in early August last year he was back to his normal ways – finishing near the front of the field.

"It was something I needed, for sure," Stewart said. "If you come out of Bristol with a top-five, you’ve had a good day. Obviously, for Chad (Johnston, crew chief) and I to work together for the first time and four races into the season be able to get a top five at Bristol – that’s pretty big for us. So it’s definitely a step in the right direction."

This Sunday in the Auto Club 400 (3 p.m. ET on FOX) at Auto Club Speedway, Stewart hopes to continue that trend and possibly end the day by celebrating in Victory Lane.

A victory this weekend in California would do a couple things for Stewart: 1. It would more than likely secure his spot in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup; 2. Extend his stretch of 15 consecutive seasons in the series with a win; and 3. Serve notice to his fellow competitors that he’s back and gunning for a fourth NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship trophy.

In addition to his two wins at ACS, the Columbus, Ind., driver has six top fives, 12 top 10s and an average finish of 13.9 in 22 starts. Over the last seven ACS races, Stewart finished in the top 10 five times.

Stewart’s return to competition and how he would fare wasn’t the only thing on his mind when the 2014 season began. He had to also worry about the growing pains associated with working with a new crew chief and finding that right balance in the driver-crew chief relationship that would breed success.

Johnston, who sat atop Martin Truex Jr.’s war wagon for the past three seasons, came over during the offseason to serve as Stewart’s new crew chief, replacing Steve Addington.
