Through 16 races, the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season has already produced a reshuffled win column, breakout performances, fading hot starts and a tightening Chase picture. With the regular season entering its summer stretch -- and cars set to take on Naval Base Coronado for the first time on Sunday (4 p.m. ET, Prime Video, HBO Max, MRN Radio, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) -- these are the key driver trends helping shape the battle up front and around the cutline, with data provided by Racing Insights.

Hamlin's surging title odds
After Watkins Glen International, Denny Hamlin had an 11% probability to win claim the No. 1 seed in the 2026 Chase. After cutting into Tyler Reddick's lead by 110 points over the subsequent weeks, Hamlin now sits at 38%.

Road courses favor Reddick
However, Hamlin is projected to be out-pointed by Reddick by 31 points over the next two races -- both at road/street courses. Over the next five races, Reddick is projected to be the top point scorer at 38 points per race, with Hamlin second at 31 points per race. Don't be handing it to Hamlin just quite yet.

Cutline getting crowded
There are four drivers within 10 points of the cutline: Shane van Gisbergen, Austin Cindric, Erik Jones and Brad Keselowski. All four race for different teams, representing all three manufacturers.

Win column turnover
Only four of the 14 drivers who won in 2025 have reached Victory Lane again in 2026, underscoring how much the Cup Series win column has shifted year over year. Notably, championship frontrunners and Hendrick Motorsports teammates Kyle Larson and William Byron are among the winless.

Jones back in The Chase mix
Erik Jones ranks 15th in points, his highest position after 16 races since he was 14th at this point in 2018 while driving for Joe Gibbs Racing. That said, while No. 43 gained 10 positions in the standings over the last four races at high-speed tracks, short-intermediates and road courses are projected to be his worst track types the rest of the way, leaving him with a 35% Chase probability.

Bubba's fast start has slowed
Bubba Wallace opened 2026 with top-10 finishes in four of the first five races but has only three top 10s in the 11 races since. The dip has dropped Wallace to 13th in the standings, more than 300 points behind his championship-leading teammate.

Bell's narrow bright spots
Christopher Bell's runner-up finishes at Nashville Superspeedway and Michigan International Speedway are his only top-15 finishes in the last nine races. Compounding the difficulties, he now has a fractured left wrist to contend with as the series shifts to a pair of road courses. More than likely he'll manage his way through it, but it's not a non-factor.

Blaney carries the Penske flag
Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney has 11 top-10 finishes in 2026 -- more than Joey Logano and Austin Cindric have combined (nine). Blaney is one of just two Ford drivers inside the top 15 in points, joining RFK Racing's Chris Buescher.

SVG set to create separation during road-course swing
Shane van Gisbergen currently has a 67% probability to make The Chase. If he wins neither upcoming road/street-course race, his projection falls to 50%. If he wins one, it rises to 80%. If he wins both, he has a 90% probability to make The Chase.
No. 97's projected gap to the cutline is plus-43 after the next two races. If he wins both races, his projected gap grows to plus-67. The New Zealander is projected to rank sixth in total points scored over the next five races.

Hocevar building the resume
Carson Hocevar has four top-five finishes this season after entering 2026 with just three in his Cup Series career. Of course, one of those was also his first career Cup Series win. A Chase berth feels close to a lock.

Spire stands tall
Spire Motorsports has two wins in 2026, matching Chevy stablemate Hendrick Motorsports' total this season. With a pair of road courses the next two weeks and track-type ace Michael McDowell aiming to join his teammates in the win column, it's quite possible Spire passes Hendrick. And soon.

Todd takes the stage
Todd Gilliland earned the first stage win of his NASCAR Cup Series career last weekend at Pocono Raceway. Currently 25th in points, Gilliland still has an outside shot at his first Chase bid, but the forward momentum is there.

Preece falls off the lead lap, takes a dip
Ryan Preece completed every lap through the first 12 races of the season but has finished off the lead lap in each of the last four. No. 60 is now in danger of falling out of the top 20 in points, currently 19th.

Logano searching for consistency
The three-time champ has only two top-10 finishes in the last eight races, but hope is on the way. There are more races at short-intermediates and drafting tracks remaining in the regular season than any other track type. Logano currently sits 18th, but holds a 50% Chase probability with those being his two best track types.

Chastain finally finds a needed result
Ross Chastain’s eighth-place finish at Pocono was his first top 10 at a non-drafting track since Martinsville Speedway in October 2025. He'll need to keep that up over the coming months if a Chase run is in his future -- No. 1 sits 23rd in points.

Byron's big breakhrough
William Byron's third-place finish at Pocono was his first top five since Martinsville in March and his best overall result since Las Vegas Motor Speedway (third). He's not done yet, though -- 11th in points is not where the No. 24 team expects itself to be.

Keselowski takes a hit
The 2012 champ's 38th-place finish at Pocono dropped him out of a Chase position for the first time this season. The longtime veteran also remarkably has yet to win on a road course in his Cup career, so he'll potentially need to make up even further ground after the next two weeks. He's projected to rank 30th in points scored over the next two races.

Nemechek finds the front
John Hunter Nemechek led 42 laps last week at Pocono, more than he led in all of 2025 when he totaled 37. Alongside Jones, Legacy is making moves in 2026, and it's quite conceivable one of them is still standing when the championship field is whittled down to 16.
