Jones chose the pit stall closest to the pit road exit. Jones’ first career NASCAR national series win came at Phoenix in this race last year.

With his pit stall, Jones will have an opening in front of him to pull out of his pit box. Matt Crafton (starting second), Ben Kennedy (starting third), Ben Rhodes (starting fourth), Joey Coulter (starting fifth), Tyler Reddick (starting seventh), John Hunter Nemechek (starting eighth), Brennan Newberry (starting 11th), Austin Dillon (starting 12th) and Johnny Sauter (starting 14th) will also have the advantage of an opening in front of them on pit road.

Matt Tifft chose the pit stall closest to the pit road entrance.

Entering the Lucas Oil 150, the defending series champion Crafton holds a 23-point lead over Ryan Blaney for the championship.

Erik Jones, fresh off the announcement of a full-time Camping World Truck Series gig for 2015, set the Phoenix International Raceway qualifying record and will lead the field to green in Friday night’s Lucas Oil 150.

The Kyle Busch Motorsports driver led the first round with a best speed of 134.253 mph then followed that up with a blistering, record-setting clip of 135.532 mph to take the 21 Means 21 Pole Award. Jones won this race last year in just his fifth series start, becoming — at the time — the youngest NASCAR national series winner in history.

Jones will be joined on front row by Toyota stablemate and points leader Matt Crafton, who was more than a full mph off Jones’ pace at 134.399 mph.

A pair of Bens will follow in Kennedy (134.218 mph) and Rhodes (134.123 mph).

Austin Dillon, making a Truck Series start in the No. 14 Chevrolet, will start 12th after spinning a lap at 133.269 mph.

Championship contender Ryan Blaney will start 17th after not advancing to the second and final round of qualifying.

The Lucas Oil 150 starts at 8:30 p.m. ET, with coverage on FOX Sports 1.

Dover (Delaware) Police Department releases statement

RELATED: NASCAR statement regarding Dover Police Department release

AVONDALE, Ariz. — Police in Dover, Delaware released a statement Friday, confirming that an investigation of alleged domestic assault involves NASCAR driver Kurt Busch.

The Dover Police Department, through its website, said that the allegations were brought to their attention Wednesday afternoon. The authorities did not name any other parties involved.

"At this time, the department is still investigating the victim’s claims and will not have any further comment on this matter in order to preserve the integrity of the case," the statement said. "The Dover Police Department will release further information as it becomes available. We appreciate the public’s and media’s patience in this matter and are confident that the department is taking the proper investigative steps to ensure the case is resolved appropriately."

The authorities did not name any other parties involved, but the Armed Forces Foundation released a statement Friday saying that it has severed its ties to Busch out of respect to Patricia Driscoll, the foundation’s president. Busch helped the Washington, D.C.-based non-profit organization with outreach and fundraising for American military during the course of a romantic relationship with Driscoll.

"I want to, first and foremost, express the direct support from the Board of Directors of the Armed Forces Foundation to Ms. Driscoll," Pat LaFrieda, the AFF’s chairman of the board said in a statement. "For more than a decade, Ms. Driscoll has been a tireless worker and advocate for our nation’s service members, veterans, and military families. The Foundation will continue working to support service members, veterans, and military families and we ask that Ms. Driscoll’s privacy be respected.

"Given the serious nature of the allegations, the Foundation has suspended its association with Mr. Busch."

High-profile attorney Rusty Hardin, who has represented a long list of professional athletes, represents Busch. His former and current clients include Roger Clemens and Adrian Peterson.

"The Dover Police Department has been informed that Mr. Busch will fully cooperate with their investigation and he expects to be vindicated when the entire truth of the situation comes to light," Hardin said in a statement. "This allegation is a complete fabrication by a woman who has refused to accept the end of a relationship and Mr. Busch vehemently denies her allegations in every respect. At this time we intend to have no further comment in the media out of respect for the Dover Police Department’s desire to conduct a thorough investigation without a media circus."

NASCAR races twice annually in Delaware at Dover International Speedway. This year’s race weekends were May 30-June 1 and Sept. 26-28. The release from the Dover Police Department did not specify when the alleged incident occurred.

NASCAR distributed a statement Friday at Phoenix International Raceway about the case.

"NASCAR is aware of the investigation involving driver Kurt Busch," said Brett Jewkes, NASCAR Senior Vice President and Chief Communications Officer. "We recognize the seriousness of this matter and are actively gathering information from all parties, including law enforcement authorities and Stewart-Haas Racing. It would be inappropriate for NASCAR to comment further on this matter until we have more information."

Representatives for Stewart-Haas Racing, which fields the No. 41 Chevrolet for Busch in NASCAR’s top series, also released a statement but said it would not comment further: "This is an allegation Stewart-Haas Racing takes very seriously but we’re still gathering all of the facts."

Busch, a 25-time winner in NASCAR’s premier division, won the 2004 championship in the first year of what is now the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup playoffs. He has one victory this season, coming in March at Martinsville Speedway.

Schools in race markets of Richmond, Chicago, Kansas City and Phoenix receive funds for supplies, gear

The NASCAR Foundation is dedicated to helping children learn how to win, both inside and outside of the classroom, through a variety of educational opportunities.

According to the National School Supply and Equipment Association (NSSEA), public school teachers spent $1.6 billion of their own money on classroom supplies and gear during the 2012-2013 school year, and 99.5% of all public school teachers spent some money on supplies.

In 2014, The NASCAR Foundation rallied the NASCAR industry to make an impact on classroom projects focused on innovation and technology. Schools in four track markets — Richmond, Chicago, Kansas City, and Phoenix — were selected for a visit from a NASCAR driver in conjunction with a donation.

By funding classroom projects through DonorsChoose.org, The NASCAR Foundation was able to help meet needs ranging from calculators and tablets to 3D printers. Over 79 innovation and technology projects were funded, impacting over 19,000 students.

"We brought NASCAR within reach to students in these markets by hosting assemblies in which drivers talked candidly to students on the importance of education," The NASCAR Foundation Executive Director Lorene King said. "In every school, the students were very interested in listening to the NASCAR drivers, who focused on their educational efforts and their work as race car drivers.

"We hope that exposing students to some of the NASCAR efforts and providing resources to our schools across the country will inspire those students to continue their education."

The NASCAR Foundation’s 2014 Classroom Donation program wrapped up this week in Phoenix, where NASCAR Next drivers gave Mountain Sky Junior High School students a sneak peek of a trivia game on NASCAR Acceleration Nation, a website for kids scheduled to launch in early 2015.

During Chase Across North America, Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup competitor Kyle Busch visited the G.B. Swift Specialty School. NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Jamie Dick visited Laburnum Elementary School in Richmond and the the Frances Willard Elementary School in Kansas City.

Sprint Cup Series practice 1 | (RESULTS)

Harvick has won the most recent two races at Phoenix International Raceway, and currently sits in eighth in the standings, 18 points behind first-place Joey Logano. Kyle Larson once again looks to take a much-needed win from one of the Chase drivers, coming in second with the only other speed above 141 mph and a lap in 25.447 seconds.

Brad Keselowski, second-to-last in the Chase points standings, finished third-fastest with a lap of 140.851 mph.

A trio of Chevrolets, driven by Kurt Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Martin Truex Jr. placed third through sixth on the leaderboard, respectively. Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin represented Toyota in the top 10 with the seventh- and eighth-fastest laps, with Denny Hamlin and Tony Stewart rounding out the top 10.

Justin Allgaier ran the most practice laps, with 37, and finished 22nd.

Nationwide Series practice 2 | (RESULTS)

Alex Bowman was fastest in final practice as he prepares for his third Nationwide Series start of the season in, surging to the top of the leaderboard as the clock approached zero with a lap of 26.944 seconds. Bowman was the only driver to top 133 mph.

Joe Gibbs Racing nabbed the next two positions, with Cup regular Kyle Busch running a lap of 132.115 mph in 27.249 seconds and Erik Jones .082 seconds off of his Truck Series boss. Busch, the defending race-winner at Phoenix, was the only driver in the 132 mph-mark. Brendan Gaughan finished fourth, with John Wes Townley rounding out the top five.

On the eve of Veterans Day weekend, NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France and his wife Amy helped raise more than $6 million on Wednesday at "Stand Up for Heroes" in New York City in support of post-9/11 injured service members, veterans and their families through the Bob Woodruff Foundation. It was the latest in a long line of examples of NASCAR going beyond the call for America’s troops.

The Frances and another party bid and won a special auction with items and experiences from rock ‘n roll legend Bruce Springsteen. The package includes a signed guitar and an hour guitar lesson from Springsteen, who also will provide a homemade lasagna dinner and a motorcycle ride in Springsteen’s side car with "The Boss" driving.

This year’s event surpassed expectations, besting last year’s record $5 million total. Springsteen helped raise $600,000 alone with the Frances and the other party committing $300,000 apiece to the Stand Up for Heroes Fund.

NASCAR has a long track record of supporting the U.S. military, dating back to its roots. NASCAR founder Bill France Sr. began a tradition that continues to this day of recognizing Medal of Honor winners before the July 4th race at Daytona International Speedway. In June, NASCAR marked the fifth anniversary of its Troops to the Track presented by Bank of America initiative. Thousands of troops from local military installations across the country have been treated to customized VIP experiences which include garage tours, driver meet-and-greets and recognition during the drivers’ meeting, among many other special-access activities.

"NASCAR: An American Salute" is an annual tribute to the men and women who fight for our freedom. Beginning Memorial Day weekend in Charlotte through Fourth of July weekend in Daytona, teams, sponsors, tracks, the sanctioning body and its stakeholders sport special red, white and blue paint schemes and host military members and their families throughout the summer.

On this Veterans Day weekend as the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup heads to Phoenix International Raceway, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will run the Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500 as veterans, active military members and their families will be honored throughout the weekend. Like every weekend on the NASCAR schedule, the patriotic pre-race ceremony will feature an honor guard, a rousing rendition of the National Anthem and a military flyover.

"It’s in our DNA," NASCAR President Mike Helton said, "to help military families understand how grateful we are and to encourage our fans to do the same thing; it’s evolved with the sport. Bill France Jr. and certainly Bill (France) Sr. were adamant about NASCAR being a voice to remind everybody that there were men and women who were making sacrifices so that we had the opportunity to do the things that we enjoy.

"And a lot of it had to do with the fact that (France Sr.) created NASCAR right after World War II … he had a very direct purpose behind it.

"But that culture was passed on and handed down; as NASCAR grew, that responsibility grew with it."

Keselowski: ‘I feel pretty good about the actions I’ve taken’

RELATED: Follow your picks in the Chase Battle Grid Presented by Toyota

AVONDALE, Ariz. — Brad Keselowski heard tons of criticism on pit road last weekend at Texas Motor Speedway. He had the chance to hear plenty more in social media circles in the days that followed.

FULL CHASE COVERAGE

Chase hub page
Chase Grid games
#MyChaseNation

Instead of getting wrapped up in any additional drama with two races left in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup playoffs, he’s opted to tune out almost all of it.

The focus on championship goals — and not the extracurriculars — carries over for Keselowski this weekend at Phoenix International Raceway, site of Sunday’s Quicken Loans Race for Heroes 500 (3 p.m. ET, ESPN). With his title eligibility at stake in the final event of the three-race Eliminator Round, Keselowski said he can’t afford to let the buzz filter into his mindset.

"I haven’t honestly paid that much attention this week," Keselowski said after securing the second starting spot in Friday’s Coors Light Pole Qualifying. "I knew that early on in the week that it was going to be one of those weeks, and I kind of put my head down and focused on Phoenix and my Madden team to kind of get me through. So I honestly haven’t spent a lot of time with all that stuff and the rhetoric. At the end of the day, we all have our own biases and I don’t think it’s really productive for me to get into all the he-said, she-said because at the end of the day we disagree."

The disagreement last weekend erupted into a full-fledged brawl, helped by a shove from interested third party Kevin Harvick, with Keselowski and his Team Penske crew at odds with Jeff Gordon and his Hendrick Motorsports camp. Both drivers emerged scratched and scraped with enough hurt feelings to fill the Sprint Cup garage.

Gordon said his primary complaint was that Keselowski’s late-race move sent him spinning to a 29th-place finish in a crucial stage of the postseason. Harvick’s beef with Keselowski was his turning aside in the heat of Gordon’s post-race arguments.

Keselowski, as he did last month when late-race tension boiled over after the checkered flag at Charlotte Motor Speedway, insisted that his aggressive approach would not change.

"I think the more I dig into becoming what someone else wants me to be, the less I stay who I am, and who I am is someone who can win races and be a championship threat year over year with a great team that supports me, a great cast of family and friends," Keselowski said. "I’m not looking to become what everyone else wants me to become, so I have not spent a lot of time on that rhetoric, and I don’t wish to spend a lot of time trying to justify anything I do or don’t do. I feel pretty good about the actions I’ve taken. Certainly I’m not perfect. I’ve made some bad ones, but I didn’t make any bad ones last week and I still feel that way."

As dicey as Keselowski’s position was at the center of a pit-road scrum at Texas, the scenarios this weekend are just as precarious as it relates to the standings. The 2012 champion ranks seventh of the eight drivers still in the running for the title, facing a 17-point deficit to co-leaders Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin.

Still, Keselowski has emerged from direr situations. His clutch victory at Talladega Superspeedway last month rescued him from elimination in the Contender Round and punched an automatic ticket for the final eight, thanks to this season’s new Chase format. Will he need similar heroics at a track where he’s never won in any of NASCAR’s three national series?

"Technically, I don’t have to win this race, but the probabilities are that I do," Keselowski said. "I think it will be very hard to pass three cars in points. I think I’m within five (points) on all three, but that means if you didn’t win, you’d have to beat at least three cars by five spots on the track and these are good guys. These are good drivers and good teams. There’s a reason why they’re this far in the Chase and to beat all three of those by five spots, that’s a tough task for anyone to really feel good about.

"But you know if you win, you’re in and that’s the great thing about this system, and we have a great shot at it, for sure. We have to keep pushing and keep working at it, though."
