Sport’s most popular driver hasn’t won at Alabama track since 2004

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has five career Sprint Cup Series wins at Talladega Superspeedway in his career. Earnhardt Jr. won four straight races at the 2.66-mile track from the fall race of 2001 to the spring race of 2003. He also had a seven-race stretch from the fall race of 2001 to the fall race of 2004 where he won five times and finished second in the other two races. His 15.0 average finish (in 29 races) is the best among drivers to make at least five starts there. However, he has just four top-10 finishes in his last 13 races at the Alabama track.

Four-time champ finishes runner-up, sits in sixth place in standings

RELATED: Track your picks in the Perfect Chase Grid Challenge and Chase Battle Grid Presented by Toyota

CONCORD, N.C. – Jeff Gordon called his team’s performance Saturday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway "huge" after the four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion came home second to race winner Kevin Harvick.

It was the 20th top-10 finish of the season, and the sixth time this year he’s finished in the runner-up position. But more importantly, the result provided Gordon with a bit more breathing room in the points standings as the series prepares to head to Talladega Superspeedway for the final race of the Contender Round in this year’s Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

A win at Talladega would guarantee Gordon one of the eight positions that will advance into the Eliminator Round (Martinsville, Texas and Phoenix), and keep his hopes for a fifth championship alive.

But a victory at Talladega is anything but a guarantee for Gordon or any one of the other 42 drivers that will line up to take the green flag in Sunday’s GEICO 500 (2 p.m. ET, ESPN).

"The (Chase) format is definitely creating a lot of drama, a lot of intensity, a lot of pressure, and each round seems to intensify that much more," Gordon said in the aftermath of the Bank of America 500.

There will be drivers "that really have to win … that race and they have to maybe get a top five or make up a lot of points. Certainly these last two weeks have shaken things up quite a bit.

"I like our chances. I think we’ve got an excellent race team and I really hope we can make it through Talladega because I think the next round suits us very, very well."

Joey Logano, a winner at Kansas, and Harvick are locked into the Eliminator Round regardless of their results next weekend. With eight drivers advancing, that leaves six positions to be determined by points, or a victory at the 2.66-mile superspeedway.

Heading into Saturday’s race, Gordon was eighth in points, eight points ahead of teammate Kasey Kahne. He is now sixth in the standings, with the ninth-place driver (Matt Kenseth) 18 points behind. A finish of 16th or better would put Gordon into the next round, as would finishes of 17th (and at least one lap led) or 18th (and most laps led).

No one, he said, "wants to deal with Talladega."

"Everybody would like to take the weekend off there if they could. Two guys in some ways get to and the rest of us are going to have to go race there.

"We’ve got a little bit of a cushion but not near enough to be comfortable by any means. We’ll go and race the way we normally do there, which is just try to be smart, try to stay out of the mess and then put ourselves in a good position to get a good finish, (and) hope it works out."

At Charlotte, Gordon’s No. 24 Chevrolet was extremely competitive on the long green-flag runs. He led six times for a total of 74 laps.

A late round of green-flag pit stops allowed Harvick to extend his lead when Gordon found himself dealing with slower traffic as he exited pit road and returned to the track at Lap 311.

And while he had one final opportunity on a restart with two laps remaining, he was unable to get back around Harvick when the green flew for the final time.

"We just didn’t have some of the things that we needed to go a little bit better go our way," he said.

Gordon leads all active drivers in wins at Talladega with six. Only four of the eligible Chase drivers – Ryan Newman, Joey Logano, Kasey Kahne and Carl Edwards – are winless on the series’ biggest track.

Given his position in the standings, there’s no opportunity to lie back and let things sort themselves out.

"We’re going to have to just go race Talladega, which isn’t a bad thing," he said. "I don’t like leaving things up to chance, which happens a lot of times at Talladega, but at the same time if it’s meant to be … for us to move on to the next round, we’ll find out.

"If our team is good enough, if our cars are good enough, which I think we are, we’ll go through to the next round."

Scuffle takes place crammed between haulers

RELATED: Full results | Updated standings

CONCORD, N.C. — The new Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup format was supposed to add drama to the playoffs.

And boy, did it ever.

The finish of the Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, which saw Kevin Harvick lock up his spot in the Eliminator Round, was wild indeed with tensions overflowing and 2012 Sprint Cup Series champion Brad Keselowski in the middle of it all.

Keselowski clipped Denny Hamlin‘s rear bumper on the cool-down lap after the race, later hitting Matt Kenseth‘s car after Kenseth had removed his seat belt. Tony Stewart was also caught up in the round of bumper cars, causing the No. 14 driver to retaliate by backing his car into the No. 2, crumpling its front. Hamlin was fired up in the garage and was shouting at Keselowski, with crew members from both teams also getting into it.

After cooling down in his hauler, Hamlin attempted to explain his side of things.

"I was going in Turn 1 and there’s a corner there, so you have to back off and he just plowed into us. He’s just out of control; he’s desperate, obviously. It’s either four or five of us are wrong or he’s wrong because he’s pissed off everyone. Just disappointing.

"That was unfortunate, and Matt was nearly out of his car and (Keselowski) just plowed into Matt, and then ran into Tony and then he went in through the garage and cleared out transmissions and did burnouts in the garage and just acting like a dumb (expletive) instead of a champion."

Things were even more testy between Keselowski and Kenseth. The mild-mannered Kenseth took off after Keselowski as he was walking in between haulers, and things got physical between the two former champions, with both Keselowski and Kenseth and their crews shouting back and forth.

"Besides the race, he (Keselowski) knew I was out there and on that restart wrecked me," Kenseth said. "I guess I shouldn’t have went out there. Really the safety — he was doing something with Denny there, and I don’t know if he was mad at him. I had my HANS off and my seat belt’s off and he clobbers me at like 50 (mph). With the accidents and stuff that we’ve had around here — the race is over and we’re trying to come back to pit road. If he wants to come and talk about it like a man, then go do that — but to try and wreck somebody on the racetrack and to come down pit road with other cars and people standing around with seatbelts off and drive into the side of me is just inexcusable. There is no excuse for that. He’s a champion and he’s supposed to know better than that."

Jeff Gordon and Harvick both said the fact that Kenseth was that fired up and angry spoke volumes.

"When you see Matt Kenseth want to fight, you know it’s intense," Harvick said, adding that Kenseth’s reaction shows "NASCAR has done the right thing with this format."

Gordon was a little more reserved in his comments, but added, "Obviously, there was some built up animosity towards Brad. I better hold the rest of my thoughts back."

Kenseth and Keselowski have a history together, one that showed up earlier in the race when Kenseth clipped Keselowski on a Lap 272 restart. That resulting contact hindered Keselowski, but really hurt Kenseth, who dropped from fourth to 18th in a matter of laps. Kenseth was also critical of Keselowski’s driving at Talladega in May, when the Team Penske driver was six laps down and sparked the "Big One," a 14-car crash.

What angered Keselowski on this night was what he said Kenseth did right before the final restart on Lap 333.

"When he came by he swung at my car and tore the whole right-front off of it," Keselowski said. "When we restarted fifth with no right-front on it, we fell all the way back to 16th and it ruined our day. That gave us a big Chase hurt, which is unfortunate, and then for some reason after the race the 11 stopped in front of me and tried to pick a fight, so I don’t know what’s up with that. And he swung and hit my car and I figured if we are going to play car wars, I’ll join too. You know those guys can dish it out but they can’t take it. And I give it back to them and now they want to fight."

As for the contact with Stewart, Keselowski said, "I don’t think Tony knew what was going on. He is upset and he has every right to be. His car was tore up. There was a whole lot of other stuff going on, I’m sure when he sees the whole situation, he will understand."

NASCAR is reviewing the incidents that took place at the end of the race and immediately after.

NASCAR’s Senior Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton said that Keselowski was asked to come in to give his take of what happened. A crew member of the No. 20, mechanic Jesse Sanders, and Kenseth’s crew chief, Jason Ratcliff, also came in.

"As always, we will look at everything, we’ll continue to gather the facts, the tapes and the video and things of that nature," Pemberton said. "Talk to some other people that were around, and we’ll work on that and we’ll come up with something by Tuesday or something, like we normally do."

Of the drivers involved in the post-race drama, Hamlin is sitting in the best shape with a ninth-place finish, putting him seventh in the standings and in position to advance to the Eliminator Round.

Kenseth, who finished 19th, had a rough night altogether after having to start at the back for an unapproved adjustment. He is currently in ninth place, just one point outside of the eighth and final position to make it into the next round of the Chase.

Keselowski is in 10th place in the standings following a 16th-place finish at Charlotte, where he was the defending victor and in the top 10 for much of the night. He almost definitely needs a win in the GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway next Sunday (2 p.m. ET, ESPN) to advance to the Eliminator Round. Hamlin, for one, expects more shenanigans as the No. 2 driver tries to get there.

"My guess is he will probably try to wreck everyone. It’s his only shot. So, he’ll just be out of control like normal," the Joe Gibbs Racing driver said.

"We’ll do what we have to do to get in and that’s big picture. Luckily, it didn’t cause us to wreck. If it would have caused us to wreck, I’d be waiting for him right now."

No. 88 team struggles after leading laps early

RELATED: Track your picks in the Perfect Chase Grid Challenge and Chase Battle Grid Presented by Toyota

CONCORD, N.C. — Dale Earnhardt Jr. didn’t win Saturday night’s Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, thus guaranteeing himself a spot in the next round of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

He didn’t finish well enough to climb out of a hole he landed in after finishing 39th at Kansas Speedway a week earlier.

Instead, the Hendrick Motorsports driver found himself trying to battle back from a lost lap caused by a broken shifter, the result of a vibration, barely 140 laps into the 334-lap race.

In the end, it was a lost cause. The shifter was eventually repaired but the window of opportunity the 40-year-old needed had already closed.

Although he made it back onto the lead lap briefly near the end, a final necessary pit stop dropped him one back. He finished 20th in a race won by fellow Chase driver Kevin Harvick.

Earnhardt Jr. will head to Talladega next weekend needing a win or a miracle to remain alive in this year’s title hunt, 26 points behind teammate Kasey Kahne who resides in the eighth, and final, transfer spot.

"The vibration broke the shifter in half and it just wasn’t a good night," Earnhardt Jr. said afterward. "The car just wasn’t handling well and the vibration was really giving us a lot of problems."

Running ninth at Lap 120, Earnhardt Jr. informed his team of the shifter problem less than 20 laps later, just about the time the field was coming to pit road following the third caution of the race.

After multiple pit stops, Earnhardt eventually returned to the lineup 23rd but quickly told crew chief Steve Letarte that the quick fix "didn’t work."

A cycle of green flag stops cost him a lap to the leader just shy of the 200-lap mark — because he had only third and fourth gear, his crew had to push his car out of its pit stall to get him back under way.

"This isn’t what we need to do," he admitted after failing to end in Victory Lane in his 30th opportunity on the 1.5-mile track.

Now, it’s win Talladega or lose a shot at the championship.

"Go out there and win it," he said of next weekend’s Geico 500 at the 2.66-mile superspeedway. "We can do it; we have on there a lot of times.

"I know what we need to do. We will just have to build a fast car and hope that we don’t have any gremlins and try to go out there and win it."

Letarte, who will depart at season’s end to move into the broadcast booth with NBC Sports, said the team’s situation was simple.

"Listen, you can’t break parts if you want to win races," he said. "We’ve just got to figure out why the part broke."

The issue was similar to one suffered by teammate Jimmie Johnson earlier this season. "And we made changes to the parts so we wouldn’t have it happen again," said Letarte.

But the shifter wasn’t the cause of the team’s trouble, he said. It was simply fallout from the "phantom" vibration that the team was unable to correct.

"We didn’t really have it bad in practice but we picked it up today," he said. "Vibrations hurt horsepower, hurt handling, hurt parts. That’s probably the root cause and the shifter’s probably just the result."

While they were able to eventually repair the shifter, the lost lap proved more difficult to overcome.

"He started shotgun on the field and drove back to the 31 (Ryan Newman) who I think was running like 11th," Letarte said. "I think you have a nice smooth race and you keep your track position, give yourself an opportunity and we could probably run in the top five with no problem. But you’ve got to give yourself an opportunity; you’ve got to stay up there. You can’t give up laps."

Letarte said nothing has changed in spite of his driver’s finishing position at Charlotte. The team will start all over again next week with the same goal in mind.

"I don’t think a good run here was going to make a difference. You had to win. We had to win here and we didn’t; we have to win at Talladega," he said.

"Everybody sounds disappointed that the points system creates that but I would argue that it gives you the opportunity to move forward with a win. Last year, our blown tire at Kansas would have eliminated us (from title contention) as well.

"At least we have the chance. You go to Talladega and win and you’ll be tied for the points lead leaving Talladega."
