Points leader Sauter to start up front based on combined practice speeds

Steady rain canceled Keystone Light Pole Qualifying for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series on Friday at Chicagoland Speedway.

FULL SERIES COVERAGE

Latest news
Standings
Schedule

The cancellation means series points leader Johnny Sauter will start first in Friday night’s Lucas Oil 225 (8:30 p.m. ET, FOX Sports 1) based on the NASCAR rule book, combining speeds from Thursday’s two practice sessions.

Brennan Newberry, Jeb Burton, former series champion Austin Dillon and Ryan Blaney will be the first five starters for the 15th of 22 races this year. Blaney, who topped opening practice at the 1.5-mile track, is the series’ most recent winner after a thrilling victory two weeks ago at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

Kyle Busch, the defending race winner and a five-time victor in the series this season, will start at the rear of the 32-truck field because of a driver change. Team driver Erik Jones, an 18-year-old member of the NASCAR Next class, practiced the truck Thursday while Busch was in downtown Chicago for Chase Media Day activities.

Qualifying was scheduled to begin at 3:15 p.m. ET, but after persistent showers, race officials pulled the plug on the session almost an hour after the scheduled start time. Teams pushed the trucks back to the garage area as track-drying efforts continued in hopes of salvaging the rest of the day’s schedule.

Sprint Cup Series Practice 1 | Results

Looking to improve on his runner-up finish in last year’s Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup opener, Kyle Busch topped opening Sprint Cup Series practice at Chicagoland Speedway on Friday.

Busch’s speed of 191.442 — obtained on his 21st of 21 laps around the 1.5-mile track — was enough to pace the field in preparation for Sunday’s MyAFibStory.com 400 (2 p.m. ET, ESPN).

Ryan Newman (191.042) and Carl Edwards (191.022) joined Busch at the top, creating a top-three of Chase drivers, with representation from all three manufacurers. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was fourth at 191.002, while defending race-winner and Busch’s Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Matt Kenseth rounded out the top-five with a speed of 190.900.

Along with Kenseth, Jimmie Johnson (190.813) and teammate Jeff Gordon (190.752) were the only two other Chase drivers to place in the top 10.

No. 1 seed Brad Keselowski (189.155) and Team Penske teammate Joey Logano (188.818) were the lowest-placing Chase drivers, pulling into the garage after placing 25th and 28th, respectively.

Nationwide Series Practice | Results

Looking to jumpstart his charge to the top of the Nationwide Series standings, Brendan Gaughan claimed the top showing in Friday’s practice for the Jimmy John’s Freaky Fast 300 powered by Coca-Cola (Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2) at Chicagoland Speedway.

The Richard Childress Racing driver topped defending race-winner Kyle Busch in the closing minutes of the session, running his 22nd and final lap at a 178.601 mph clip.

Busch’s best speed of 177.854 mph, achieved on his seventh of 11 laps around the 1.5-mile facility, edged Gaughan’s fellow RCR teammate Brian Scott’s 177.206, before being eclipsed by the driver of the No. 62 Chevrolet. Dylan Kwasniewski snuck in late, as well, to grab the third overall spot at 177.515.

Currently fifth and in pursuit of making up ground in the standings, the driver of the No. 2 narrowly bested Roush Fenway Racing’s Chris Buescher (177.165) and JR Motorsports’ Kevin Harvick (177.142). Harvick’s JRM teammate and points leader Chase Elliott was seventh on the charts at 176.956.

Sprint Cup Series regular and Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup rookie Aric Almirola, making his first Nationwide start of the season in an attempt for added track time at the Chase’s first venue, was eighth with a best speed if 176.869.

Final practice was schedule for 4:30 p.m. ET and was set to run for 90 minutes but rain washed out that session. Nationwide Series Coors Light Pole Qualifying will take place on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 2.

Maine native Austin Theriault to make third Nationwide start at Kentucky

RELATED: Play NASCAR Fantasy Live | Sign up for RaceView today

While the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and Camping World Truck Series race in neighboring New Hampshire next weekend, the state of Maine will be sponsoring a Nationwide Series car in Kentucky with Pine Tree State native Austin Theriault behind the wheel.

FULL SERIES COVERAGE

On Friday, 20-year-old Theriault and Governor Paul LePage unveiled a car with Maine on the hood, a moose, blueberries, a lobster and a lighthouse on the sides during a news conference in Portland, Maine.

"Growing up, racing has always been my passion in life," Theriault said. "It was a momentous step in my career when I raced for the first time in NASCAR with JR Motorsports this past summer.

"Now, I am so excited to share with the people of my home state this exciting next step in my career, for both me and the State of Maine, before I head to Kentucky for my third NASCAR race on September 20th."

Theriault will make his third start of the season in the No. 5 Maine Open for Business Chevrolet Camaro for JR Motorsports in the VisitMyrtleBeach.com 300 at Kentucky Speedway (Saturday, Sept. 20, 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPNEWS). At Iowa Speedway in May, he finished 15th, and at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in July, he finished 21st.

"I have spent the last several years providing Maine a much needed tune-up in Augusta," Governor Paul R. LePage said. "Our goal all along has been to make our state more competitive for private investment and job creation and we have already seen tremendous results.

"Those efforts are continuing, and we are very pleased to now be partnering with Austin Theriault to help steer us to even greater prosperity and help make Maine the ultimate engine for economic development."

Theriault was the 2012 Maine Vintage Race Car Association’s Driver of the Year, and he made his NASCAR K&N Pro Series East debut after winning "Maine Young Guns" inaugural competition in 2012. It was that same year he became a part-time developmental driver for Brad Keselowski Racing.

Hamlin’s pit boss back on the box after serving six-race suspension

MORE: Hamlin on crew chief’s return

JOLIET, Ill. – NASCAR Sprint Cup Series crew chief Darian Grubb said it was "a 27-cent part that came loose" that resulted in penalties to the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 11 team and driver Denny Hamlin at Indianapolis Motor Speedway earlier this year.

FULL CHASE COVERAGE

Chase Grid games
#MyChaseNation

"It was actually new parts that week on our car," Grubb said Friday at Chicagoland Speedway, site of Sunday’s MyAFibStory.com 400 (ESPN, 2 p.m. ET). "It was a nut plate that is used as an aircraft fastener and it didn’t have enough torque on it, and it backed off and came loose.

"It’s something that we’ve taken out of the cars and have never seen again and never seen before."

Grubb is back at the track following a six-week suspension for the violation. Grubb was fined $125,000 while car chief Wesley Sherrill was also suspended for six weeks. Hamlin and JGR team president J.D. Gibbs (listed as the team owner) were docked 75 points each as well.

The fastener failure resulted in ductwork becoming loose inside the No. 11 car.

"It’s not a gray area," Grubb said of the infraction, "not anything intentional. There’s not any real performance gain there. Everybody in the garage uses those same covers and they came loose the week they shouldn’t have."

Team engineer Mike Wheeler served as interim crew chief in Grubb’s absence. Hamlin scored three top 10s in Grubb’s absence, and enters this year’s Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup as the ninth seed

"NASCAR does a great job of policing the sport," Grubb said. "It’s the same templates and the same work that you have to do every week. … You have to meet NASCAR’s rules and you have to do that every week."

A prepared Darian Grubb returns after six-race suspension

RELATED: Play Perfect Chase Grid Challenge and Chase Battle Grid Presented by Toyota

CHICAGO — Crew chief Darian Grubb, exiled for six weeks for an infraction at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, returns to the pit box this weekend just as the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup gets underway.

"It’s good to have him back, obviously," Denny Hamlin, driver of the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 11 Toyota, said Thursday during media day in downtown Chicago. "He’s been working more hours since he’s been away from the track than he has when he comes on the road."

FULL CHASE COVERAGE

Grubb and car chief Wesley Sherrill were suspended for ductwork inside the car that wasn’t sealed as required by NASCAR. Grubb was fined $125,000, Hamlin was docked 75 driver points and the crew chief and car chief were also placed on probation for six months.

In Grubb’s absence, engineer Mike Wheeler was named interim crew chief.

The points loss failed to keep Hamlin out of this year’s Chase, a 10-race battle that kicks off with Sunday’s MyAFibstory.com 400 (ESPN, 2 p.m. ET).

"He says he’s learned how races play out by watching live data, he’s able to have papers all around him of strategies and stuff he can use for races that are coming up," Hamlin said of Grubb, who won the 2011 Sprint Cup title with driver Tony Stewart.

"I think he’s been able to analyze everything he could and spend more time doing that. Hopefully it all pays off with the right call at the end of the race that nobody else thought of."

Under Wheeler’s guidance, Hamlin has posted three top-10s, including a third-place finish at Atlanta. He finished 21st or worse in the other three races. With one win to his credit, at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, Hamlin enters this year’s Chase ninth in points.

"My communication with ‘Wheels’ over the last six weeks has been really good," said Hamlin. "I think he did an amazing job. We really didn’t miss a beat if you look at our performance.

"He’s still going to be that voice … it’s not like he’s going anywhere. He’ll still be a part of our race team. We’ve just got that extra championship crew chief now that we’re adding in the mix."

A winner of 24 Sprint Cup races, Hamlin nearly won it all in 2010, entering the final race with a 15-point advantage on rival Jimmie Johnson. But early issues ultimately led to a 14th-place finish, and he limped out of Homestead-Miami Speedway 39 points down to the series champion.

"We’ve won regular-season races before and been the favorites and not won (the title) over these last few years," Hamlin, 33, said. "We have a little bit different approach this year and, not that we didn’t want to perform better, but we’re trying to time this thing correctly and hopefully we have."

Kenseth, Dollar General Literacy Foundation Donate $1,000, Case Of 80 Children’s Books To Each Of The Seven Local Elementary Schools Competing In Texas Motor Speedway’s “Speeding To Read” Program

FORT WORTH, Texas (Sept. 10, 2014) – NASCAR Sprint Cup Series star Matt Kenseth is accustomed to loud, appreciative fans every time he visits Texas Motor Speedway, just not in September.

Kenseth helped transform a tranquil and idle Wednesday at the world-class motorsports facility into a thunderous Chase send-off with more than 3,000 local elementary students on hand for the official 2014-15 kickoff of Texas Motor Speedway’s Speeding To Read program. The frontstretch grandstands were alive in a sea of colors and littered with numerous hand-made signs by the students wishing Kenseth good luck in the 10-race Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup that kicks off this weekend.

Kenseth was visiting as part of the 16-driver, 16-city NASCAR “Chase Across North America,” promotional tour and served as the special guest for the seven schools competing this year in the educational program created by Texas Motor Speedway to encourage elementary school (K-5) children to read more frequently.

The throng of students was treated to a simulated 10-lap, stock-car race by the Team Texas Driving Experience that featured school administrators riding shotgun followed by the visit by the 2003 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champ. Kenseth, driver of the No. 20 Dollar General Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, deftly fielded a dozen wide-ranging questions from students on stage and thanked each by providing them with an autographed TMS hat and group photo as mementos.

The event was a natural fit for Kenseth, who just two weeks ago debuted Matt Kenseth’s Race Against Bullying children’s book aimed at educating and empowering children to make good choices if faced with bullying situations. The four-book series, created by Kenseth and his wife Katie, is being produced in partnership with the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.

Kenseth and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation received a huge roar of approval from students and faculty when he announced that the foundation was donating $1,000 and a case of 80 children’s books, including 10 copies of Kenseth’s new book, to each of the seven schools competing in “Speeding To Read.” Since the program began with a one-school pilot program in 2011-12, Speeding To Read has reached more than 8,600 students that have combined to read more than 1.3 million books heading into this year.

“The Speeding to Read program is pretty cool, I’ve been learning about it. Reading is important to me and Dollar General and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. It was cool to be part of the event and that was generous of them (DGLF),” said Kenseth, an avid reader who also has three young children. “Education is obviously important. It has always been important, but I think it’s really important in the society that we live in with things so technologically driven. It’s easy today with all the advances in technology to not take time and actually grab a book and read when you can play a video game or do something else. It’s cool to see all the kids come out here, all the kids being excited about reading and trying to win for their respective schools. It’s fun to see all that excitement.”

The excitement for Kenseth begins this week as the reformatted, elimination-style Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup opens with Sunday’s race at Chicagoland Speedway (ESPN, Noon CT).

“It’s a really unique format,” Kenseth said. “I’m really curious to see how it all works out. It should be interesting. I hope that we can win Chicago so the pressure is not on us and we can go race the next couple weeks and get ready for the next one. It’s going to be exciting. Obviously, it is your goal to go to Homestead to be in one of those four cars with a shot. I hope we can do that, but you’ve got to get through it one round at a time.”

Kenseth returns to Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday, Nov. 2, for the AAA Texas 500, the eighth race in the 10-event Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. The AAA Texas 500 is now part of the three-race Eliminator segment, which opens in Martinsville (Va.), shifts to Texas and then on to Phoenix. The field will be trimmed from eight to four contenders after this three-race segment and that foursome will go head-to-head at the Nov. 16 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway to determine the Sprint Cup Series champion.

Should Kenseth, seeded 14th in the 16-driver Chase field but annually a contender, advance to the Eliminator round, Texas Motor Speedway could be pivotal to his hopes of pursuing another series title. He has two victories (2002, spring of ‘11), ranks first with a career finishing average of 8.3, and ranks first in career top-five finishes (13 in 23 starts) and tied for the top spot with Jimmie Johnson for career top-10 finishes (16).

“It’s funny how things change,” said Kenseth, who joined Joe Gibbs Racing last year after previously spending his entire career at Roush Fenway Racing. “Before I came to Joe Gibbs Racing, there were a few tracks where I felt were terrible tracks for me and some tracks that were way better. This was one that was one of my best.

“When I went over there some of the tracks I thought were my worst and I was really bad at ended up being some of my best tracks, New Hampshire and Martinsville. This one hasn’t been that great for us for some reason, I don’t know why. I haven’t really put my finger on it. We keep working harder at it. I feel like we are gaining on it a little bit, but it has been a little bit of a struggle. I always have confidence coming here. It’s always been a great track and enjoyed racing here.”

Tickets for the AAA Texas 500, beginning as low as $30 for adults and $10 for children, are available by visiting www.texasmotorspeedway.com or by calling the Texas Motor Speedway ticket office at (817) 215-8500.
