France reminds driver of Road to Recovery program

When suspended race car driver Jeremy Mayfield called into a Motor Racing Network show on Tuesday night to speak with NASCAR Chairman Brian France, the unexpected and unorthodox scenario immediately filled Twitter timelines and created a buzz in the racing world.

But as far as NASCAR is concerned, the story isn’t new.

If Mayfield — who was suspended in 2009 after testing positive for a banned substance — wants to compete in NASCAR again, he must go through the sport’s Road to Recovery program — something France reminded Mayfield during a minute-and-a-half live exchange on Eli Gold’s evening show, “NASCAR Live.”

After Gold told his listeners he had a familiar name on the phone, Mayfield explained why he used the forum and seized the opportunity to speak with France.

"Jeremy, you know the path back for you is the path back for anybody."

NASCAR Chairman Brian France, to driver Jeremy Mayfield

“I just want to ask Brian, if he’s willing to accept the fact I’d like to come back racing and if we can sit down and talk about it and figure out what we need to do to make that work,’’ Mayfield said.

France responded, “Jeremy, you know the path back for you is the path back for anybody.

“… You have a welcome mat out anytime you want. But there’s a stated process that AJ Allmendinger just went through, and we welcomed him back and it’s terrific.

“That’s up to you.’’

After a short pause, Mayfield said, “OK, well I appreciate that. I didn’t mean to bother you on the show, but it’s the only way I could get ahold of you and figured it would be a good opportunity to do that.”

Although Mayfield has never formally entered NASCAR’s Road to Recovery program, 17 people — team members and drivers — have been reinstated after successfully completing it, including former Camping World Truck Series competitor Aaron Fike. He was reinstated this fall after being suspended in 2007 following an arrest for heroin.

Allmendinger was reinstated in September following a two-month suspension from NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competition after he tested positive for a banned substance in a random test in July.

While these two drivers have generated the biggest headlines, crew members have also successfully returned to work after completing a supervised recovery program tailored to each individual’s needs and followed up with rigorous testing.

“It’s an old story in that the story hasn’t changed,’’ said John Bobo, director of NASCAR’s Racing Operations and Substance Abuse Program. “When someone tests positive for the kind of things he’s tested positive for, the most you want for that individual is to seek some kind of help.  And NASCAR has always been willing to facilitate treatment for anyone who would like treatment.

“Our road to recovery program and the people that have graduated from the Road to Recovery are testament to those principals.’’

“There’s a lot of other people, not just drivers, who have successfully returned to work and what’s great is I hear about what a difference it’s made in their life and their families in addition to being able to come back and compete.

“We do have a very successful track record of reinstating people to competition whether its crew guys, mechanics.’’

NASCAR’s Bowyer quickly up to speed in AF-Waltrip Ferrari 458

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The “Roar Before the Rolex 24” paid unexpected dividends for AF-Waltrip. Not only was the team’s new Ferrari 458 ready for the three-day session last weekend at Daytona International Speedway, NASCAR driver Clint Bowyer quickly got up to speed in his first sports car test.

“We didn’t know if our new car would be ready for the Rolex 24, so we also entered last year’s car just in case,” said Rob Kauffman, who both co-owns the team and co-drives with Michael Waltrip. “Now, both cars are ready for the Rolex 24.”

Joining Kauffman and Waltrip at the test were endurance veteran Rui Aguas and Michael Waltrip Racing driver Bowyer, who finished second in the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship.

"It was amazing how quickly Clint adapted on his first time out in this type of car."

— Rob Kauffman

“It was amazing how quickly Clint adapted on his first time out in this type of car,” Kauffman added. “He was as quick as me on his first hot lap, and quickly caught up to Michael’s times. Within 10 laps, he was within a second of Rui, our lead driver.”

The No. 56 AF-Waltrip entry was second-fastest of the Ferrari 458s participating in the “Roar.” Quickest was the No. 69 AIM Autosport Team FXDD, with a Ferrari entry of Anthony Lazzaro, who co-drove with defending Rolex Series GT champ Emil Assentato, Nick Longhi and Guy Cosmo.

Audi also had a strong presence at the “Roar,” with Audi Sport Customer Racing supporting four cars tested by APR Motorsport, Rum Bum Racing and Alex Job Racing. Rene Rast was quickest of the Audis in the No. 52 APR Motorsport entry co-driven by Ian Baas and factory drivers Marc Basseng and Frank Stippler.

For Rum Bum Racing, it marked its first appearance in the Rolex Series after three years in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, winning the 2012 Grand Sport team title.

“I felt comfortable the first time I sat in the car,” said Rum Bum Racing driver Matt Plumb. “It only took me a couple of laps to get up to speed. The entire group from Audi Sport Customer Racing is confidence-inspiring. They’re helping everyone on our team learn the ins-and-outs of the car, and they’ve really surprised us with their level of support. Now we’ve got some notes to work from, se we feel we’ll be as prepared as we can be when we come back in two weeks.”

Porsche teams had the fastest three GT cars in the test, led by Patrick Long in the debut of the No. 73 Park Place Motorsports Porsche GT3 co-driven by Patrick Lindsey, Jason Hart, Spencer Pumpelly and Daniel Graeff.

Practice for the Rolex 24 At Daytona begins on Wednesday, Jan. 23, with opening sessions for the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge and Ferrari Challenge. The Rolex Series holds opening practice and qualifying on Thursday, with the season-opening GRAND-AM 200 for the CTSCC on Friday. Live SPEED coverage of the 51st Rolex 24 begins at 3 p.m. ET on Saturday, Jan. 26.

Veteran driver poised to make 200th career Nationwide start

Eric McClure will return as driver of the No. 14 Toyota in the NASCAR Nationwide Series next season for TriStar Motorsports.

The Mooresville, N.C., based team and the driver announced the continuation of their partnership Wednesday, while confirming that Reynolds and Hefty would return to sponsor McClure for its seventh consecutive season.

McClure, who has yet to record a top-10 finish in the series, is scheduled to make his 200th career Nationwide start in the season-opening Drive4COPD 300 on Feb. 23 at Daytona International Speedway. McClure joined the Mark Smith-owned TriStar organization in 2011.

Last season, the Chilhowie, Va., native missed five races while recovering from serious injuries suffered in a multicar crash at Talladega Superspeedway in May. After returning to competition the following month at Road America, he completed the rest of the season without a failure to finish, rallying to a career-best finish of 16th place in the Nationwide points.

"We have had a great relationship with Mark and his family the past two seasons so it made the most sense to return to the organization for the upcoming season," McClure said. "We made great strides in our performances the past two seasons and although the 2012 season was an up-and-down year for me personally, we stuck together as a team and were able to end the 2012 season on a high note.

"I look forward to what the 2013 season has in store for me."

Veteran crew chief Wes Ward will also return to TriStar for his second straight season calling the shots for McClure.

Hometown company will adorn the No. 4 Silverado

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Turner Scott Motorsports announced Wednesday that South Boston, Va.-based company Arrowhead has signed on for the 2013 season to support hometown driver Jeb Burton as he races full-time in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series for the first time.

The 20-year-old Burton, who is racing for Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors in 2013, has made five Truck Series starts in his career, all last season. His best finish of eighth came last May at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The Burton name is no stranger to racing — Jeb’s father Ward is a former Daytona 500 winner, and his uncle Jeff is a 21-time winner on the Sprint Cup tour.

"I am so thankful to have the opportunity to represent Arrowhead in 2013," said Burton. "We all have high expectations for the 2013 season, including capturing the Rookie of the Year title and competing for wins in NCWTS.”

Burton’s announcement comes on the tail of a string of Turner Scott Motorsports news, including the rebranding of the team, the return of Justin Allgaier and sponsor Brandt and the hiring of Scott Zipadelli.

Arrowhead is a disposable electronic cigarette made by parent company Sequoyah Brands.

"We are confident in Turner Scott Motorsports and in Jeb’s ability on the track. We know that Jeb will represent Arrowhead with class and continue the Burton family tradition of excellence in racing," said Kathy Farley, president of Sequoyah Brands.

Over the course of the three-day Summit, employees and volunteers come together to share experiences and gain additional knowledge regarding their roles in operations, fire and safety, medical, security and other fields at their respective tracks.

NASCAR welcomed representatives from all tracks that host the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and GRAND-AM Road Racing as well as NASCAR Home Tracks that host developmental series events.

Sprint Cup champion shows off new NASCAR app

Brad Keselowski, 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion, and Marc Jenkins, NASCAR’s VP of digital media, joined Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs on stage Monday night in Las Vegas during Jacobs’ keynote address to kick off the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show. The trio unveiled a conceptual app that NASCAR and Qualcomm are currently working on which will allow fans at home to watch NASCAR races like never before.

NASCAR’s participation in the world’s largest electronic show is evidence of the leadership role it continues to play in the sports world. After successful partnership announcements last year with Twitter, Google and HP, NASCAR last week launched a new digital platform. The new NASCAR.com will capture the excitement of NASCAR through dynamic video, bold imagery, interactive graphics and the latest news and in-depth analysis. An interactive live leaderboard will provide fans with in-depth information in real-time for each driver on race days, and NASCAR FANTASY LIVE, the official NASCAR fantasy game, will have a new look and feel. Finally, a pair of mobile apps, which will be released before the start of the season, will give fans an unprecedented second screen experience on their tablets and mobile devices.

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is the leading international trade show for companies that make consumer electronics. On an annual basis, more than 150,000 people attend CES and more than 20,000 new products have been launched at the show, including the VCR, HDTV, DVD and the tablet computer. CES also attracts some of the biggest names in Hollywood. At last year’s show alone, celebrity attendees included Justin Timberlake, Justin Bieber, Will Smith, LL Cool J, Jillian Michaels, Ryan Seacrest, and Kelly Clarkson.

The entry list, which includes defending Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski, was released Tuesday by NASCAR in advance of Thursday’s opening day of the three-day test at Daytona International Speedway.

The test session features seven hours of testing each day, providing teams the chance to shake down the sixth-generation Sprint Cup car that will make its competition debut on the 2.5-mile oval next month. A select number of teams will participate in the newly renamed Sprint Unlimited (formerly the Budweiser Shootout) on Feb. 16 as a prelude to the Feb. 24 Daytona 500 — NASCAR’s crown jewel race.

The test, which includes a fan festival and autograph session for spectators, will mark the first laps for the Gen-6 car on a restrictor-plate track since October’s one-day session at 2.66-mile Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway. SPEED will broadcast live coverage of testing on all three days from 1 to 5 p.m. ET, and have live streaming coverage here from 9 a.m. to noon ET each day.

Hendrick Motorsports and Richard Childress Racing will have the most representation at the three-day event with four teams each in attendance.

While the Hendrick contingent will comprise its four full-time drivers from last season, the Childress bunch will include an extra entry for Austin Dillon, last year’s top rookie in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

Dillon is scheduled to make his Daytona 500 debut and compete in a handful of Sprint Cup races this season in preparation for a full-time ride in NASCAR’s premier series in 2014.

While Keselowski returns with the same crew chief, car owner and car number all intact, the Roger Penske-owned championship team will continue to bond with new teammate Joey Logano and adjust to a switch in manufacturers. Penske changed from Dodge to Ford in the offseason, returning to the blue oval fold after a 10-year absence.

Allgaier gets new crew chief one day after re-signing

Just one day after announcing Justin Allgaier would return to the Turner Scott Motorsports team for 2013, the team announced he would do so with a new crew chief.

Scott Zipadelli, a longtime NASCAR Nationwide Series crew chief who has nearly 200 series starts, will lead Allgaier in the No. 31 Brandt Chevrolet.

"I’m very excited about the opportunity to join Turner Scott Motorsports, especially having teammates to collaborate with," Zipadelli said. "I’m definitely looking forward to working with Justin (Allgaier).”

Team co-owner Steve Turner also said he is excited about the pairing.

“He’s a very talented guy with a lot of experience in the Nationwide Series, so I think he’s going to bring a lot of knowhow to this program. Our Nationwide program just keeps getting better, and we have high expectations for this coming season,” Turner said. “We have everything we need to win races and get Justin onto that championship stage in 2013, and Scott’s going to be the guy to lead us there."

Zipadelli has 11 top-fives and 46 top-10 showings in his time as a crew chief, which dates back to 2007. Most recently, Zipadelli was at RAB Racing, where he oversaw the No. 99 team.

Allgaier is coming off a season in which he finished sixth in the Nationwide points standings, amassing one win, six top-five finishes and 19 top-10 finishes.
