Veteran turns first laps in No. 18 Toyota in place of injured Kyle Busch

HAMPTON, Ga. — David Ragan made his first laps with Joe Gibbs Racing on Thursday as NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams spent a chilly afternoon testing at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Ragan, from Unadilla, Ga., was named interim driver of the team’s No. 18 Toyota on Tuesday, three days after JGR driver Kyle Busch suffered a compound fracture of the lower right leg and mid-foot fracture of his left foot in a crash during the Feb. 21 season-opening race for the XFINITY Series at Daytona International Speedway.

“I don’t know that I would call it more nervousness … you can’t really describe the amount of pressure because there’s a lot of pressure regardless of what car you’re driving," Ragan, 29, said. "Absolutely working with a different team, working with a different group of guys, manufacturer — there is just a lot of newness that surrounds it.

"It’s different, but it’s also a challenge that I’m up for and will only make me smarter and better for it."

Ragan, twice a winner in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series, spent the past three seasons driving for Front Row Motorsports, and opened the year with the organization with a 17th-place finish in last week’s Daytona 500.

With his No. 34 team not having solid sponsorship for a full season, Ragan said FRM team officials understood his request to make the move.

"They were a little surprised when I first brought it up, but you look at it from my situation and not knowing exactly what our schedule was going to look like for this year," he said. "As a race car driver, I had to look at my career and my opportunities and this was something that I couldn’t let pass."

It helped, he said, that he had worked closely in the past with JGR drivers Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards when the three were teammates at Roush Fenway Racing.

"I don’t think I would be in the (car) without their help," he said.

"David has a lot of experience," Edwards said. "My vote was to put (him) in the car and the way I understand it, everybody felt the same way.

"It’s not a good position to be in to have to go find a driver, but everybody is really excited about having David here."

Ragan is slated to compete for JGR in this weekend’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 (FOX, 1 p.m. ET) at AMS, and according to a statement from the team, he will remain in the car "for the next several weeks."

Two-time NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion Matt Crafton filled in for the team last weekend at Daytona, finishing 18th.

With Ragan’s temporary departure, Front Row officials announced that veteran Joe Nemechek would step into its No. 34 Ford for this weekend’s race.

Ragan called Nemechek "the perfect fit" for Front Row.

"I know a few guys have reached out to them and they’ve got a couple of different scenarios to play out," he said. "I will certainly throw a recommendation out and just like Kyle wants me to take care of his car while he’s out, I want whoever is in that car to take care of that program while I’m out for a few weeks."

Ragan has 12 starts at AMS, with a best finish of eighth in 2008.

With Busch on the sidelines, JGR also announced earlier this week that Erik Jones would pilot the team’s No. 54 Toyota in this week’s XFINITY Series race.

Four-hour session offers crucial audition for 2015 rules package

Play: NASCAR Fantasy Live

ATLANTA, Ga. — NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams will get the first opportunity to shake down their cars with the new 2015 rules package today at Atlanta Motor Speedway, with a four-hour open test scheduled for the 1.54-mile track.

While four teams took part in a Goodyear tire test last month at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and some worked briefly with the package during a Homestead-Miami Speedway test session last fall, Thursday’s workout will be the first open to all organizations.

Simulation programs have provided the bulk of the knowledge thus far about how the reduced horsepower and downforce package will affect this season’s racing. NASCAR’s limited testing policy, which took effect this season, does not allow private team testing at any sanctioned or non-sanctioned venue.

The Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 is scheduled for Sunday, March 1 at AMS (with TV coverage on FOX).

"You can get a lot done," Rodney Childers, crew chief for defending Sprint Cup Series champion Kevin Harvick and the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet, said of the four-hour opportunity.

"You know (the abrasiveness of the track) will eat the tires off of the car at the beginning of the test. You just have to do what you think is right."

"Going out there and running three or four laps at a time isn’t going to get you anything," he said. "Getting a lot of cycles on your tires isn’t going to help.

"So you have to plan your stuff out, go out and run 12-15 laps at a time, take your time and learn what you can."

Chevrolet’s Pat Suhy said holding the test before the race weekend should be beneficial for those teams that don’t have the technology available to many of the larger groups.

"The guys that can’t do the simulations, that don’t have the resources to do that kind of stuff, it’s going to give them an opportunity to put a lot of laps on their cars, learn a lot, make a lot of changes and understand the sensitivities to different setup changes," he said. "Our teams are going to be able to go out and validate (what they’ve learned off the track)."

The drop in horsepower has been achieved through the use of a tapered spacer on engines similar to those already being used in the NASCAR XFINITY and Camping World Truck Series. The move is expected to lessen horsepower, formerly in the 850 range, to 725.

At the same time, changes to the radiator pan under the front of the car and the rear spoiler have lessened the amount of downforce produced by the 2015 cars by approximately seven percent on the front and 17 percent on the rear. That combination has created less drag (as much as 12 percent), which should be offset by the drop in horsepower.

While today’s test is the only session at a facility leading directly into a race weekend, additional open tests are scheduled for Charlotte (March 11), Richmond (April 8), Kentucky (April 15), Indianapolis (April 29), Dover (May 13), Darlington (June 11), Chicago (July 15), Bristol (July 30), Homestead (Aug. 26), Kansas (Sept. 16), Phoenix (Oct. 14) and Fontana, California. (Oct. 29).

Team Penske’s No. 22 atones for Homestead miscues, basks in 500 win

Play: NASCAR Fantasy Live

It may have taken three l-o-n-g months of offseason for redemption, but there’s no redemption quite like celebrating a Daytona 500 victory.

And Joey Logano’s No. 22 Penske Racing team couldn’t have been more up for the challenge.

After a stellar, career best five-win 2014 season and berth in the NASCAR’s Final Four, Logano’s shot at his first Sprint Cup Series championship was — at the very least — complicated by a couple of pit-road miscues, including a late-race pit stop that went miserably wrong in the waning laps of the Homestead-Miami Speedway season finale.

Longtime jack man Ray Gallahan — the most experienced member of Logano’s pit crew — had trouble getting the No. 22 Shell/Pennzoil Ford jacked up properly resulting in a longer pit stop, ultimately hurting any chances of a race win.

"Everyone’s wanting to make a big deal out of that, but really it was one point in a whole playbook of a year,” Logano’s crew chief Todd Gordon said Tuesday. "Unfortunately it was what it was at Homestead. But it was pretty much put in the rearview mirror to start with right off the bat in the offseason and we’ve worked forward and focused on ’15.

"I think the pit crew did a phenomenal job Sunday and it’s got to be good for them. We made gains on pit road on every stop and they performed well. Honestly, the jack man, Ray Gallahan, he’s a Florida native, so that was a pretty special win, to win back home at Daytona and it be the 500."

As far as Gordon and Logano are concerned, last year’s flub is a distant memory and was only days after the season ended. Of course, that’s even easier to feel when you’re basking in the glory of winning the sport’s biggest race.

As badly as Gallahan felt in November, he couldn’t have felt much better than Sunday evening — the crew still wet with champagne, confetti sticking to their firesuits and smiles as wide as the famous Daytona frontstretch long into the night.

He told ESPN.com the next day, "You’ve got to embrace it. If you run from it, if you try to pretend like it didn’t happen, you’ll never get over it. You’ll always try to hide from people wanting to talk to you about it.

"You almost have got to attack it like a pit stop and try to own it. It’s made me better. I wish it didn’t happen. But it definitely has made me better."

It’s exactly the philosophy Gordon used: last November’s mishap was a learning opportunity not a point to dwell on. Perspective helps.

"It was one particular play,” Gordon said. "If you look at any professional sport, if someone misses that last 3-pointer attempt with the buzzer going off, we don’t chastise him for it. One play shouldn’t define a season. Unfortunately, it did in that case. … whether it was car-side, or performance-side.

"We’ve identified all the things we could do to make that situation better and I think we’ve done that in the offseason. We’ve used it as a productive tool to try to identify what we can do better and minimize those challenges and I think we had a successful kickoff. We had a flawless day on pit road and that definitely added to the ability to finish off the Daytona 500 the way we did."

"It’s a lot easier to refocus people than to re-motivate people,” Gordon said with a slight laugh. "At the end of 2013 we had a lot of momentum in our first year with Joey. And we carried it over to ’14 and carried it through the season and were definitely thought of as a title contender from all the competitors and the media so great to kick off this season and pull some of that ’14 momentum forward. We need to carry it forward through this season as well.

"To me, it’s a huge advantage winning this race and the 88 team [with 2014 Daytona 500 winner Dale Earnhardt Jr.] had it last year,” Gordon explained. "If you look, they came forward into the next three races very competitively. I think you got a great reward because you’re the first to have the reduction in anxiety and you can say, ‘I got a win.’ "

The No. 22 road and pit crew stayed an extra day in Daytona Beach this week getting a front row seat as their Daytona 500 winning car was officially put on display for a year in the Daytona 500 Experience.

"It’s pretty cool. Everyone goes through the emotions differently, but winning the Daytona 500 is something you should stop and cherish,” Gordon said. "But they aren’t going to push the next week’s race off. So getting back and in routine to prepare for Atlanta and what we can learn with the new packages is in the forefront. They came into work today focused hard on how we can go win Atlanta.”

As for Logano, he’s full steam ahead as well, insisting he’d rather focus on what happened this week than what occurred three months ago.

"It really didn’t stay in my mind that long, you move on,” Logano said. "It’s history. It’s past. You focus on the future. If you dwell on the past, you’ll never move forward.

"Obviously you’re frustrated at the end of that race. The team stuck together, their attitude was awesome over the offseason. They worked so hard to become better. We used it as a positive, how to motivate ourselves to be a better team.

"I’m confident as a driver I know I have the best team out there,” Logano continued. "Whether it’s the road crew or the pit crew, I know they’re the best team out there.

"As long as we stay together as a team, win or lose as a team, that’s what makes a strong team, you know, is people that live and die together. You do it.

"It’s really cool to see how they reacted over the offseason and used it as a positive."

Alfalla (2) heads to victory at Daytona as Laughlin (51) heads to the wall.

Ray Alfalla, two-time champion of the NASCAR PEAK Antifreeze Series Powered by iRacing, kicked-off the 2015 season with a victory at Daytona International Speedway. Alfalla, who started thirty-fourth, came out on top after contact with Tyler Laughlin as the two battled for the lead with three laps to go. The incident resulted in Laughlin crashing and flipping wildly down the backstraightaway which brought out a race-ending caution. Series rookie Patrick Crabtree finished second followed by fellow-first timers Nathan Wise and Tyler Hill with Byron Daley rounding-out the top five despite minor crash damage from an earlier incident.

Restrictor plate racing in the NASCAR PEAK Antifreeze Series always seems to produce a late-race pass for the win and the 2015 opener was no exception. With a dozen laps remaining Alfalla found himself with one of the few remaining undamaged cars after a flurry of late cautions thinned the field. Alfalla restarted fifth and bided his time until six laps to go when he moved to the outside lane behind Laughlin and began pushing in hopes of clearing Crabtree’s lead car.

It appeared the same situation would repeat itself for the third time in as many laps when the field hit the line with three laps to go. However, this time Laughlin did not pull down to the bottom as soon as he cleared Crabtree. Instead he allowed Alfalla to clear Crabtree as well which led to disaster for Laughlin.

As soon as Alfalla was clear of Crabtree, Laughlin moved to the bottom faster than Alfalla, who was still connected to Laughlin’s rear bumper. As a result, Alfalla moved too far to the right side of Laughlin’s bumper, causing Laughlin to hook directly into the outside wall and back in front of traffic. The resulting spectacular crash relegated Laughlin to an eighteenth place finish.

Early in the race The Drill Isle team had complete control at the front of the pack with Byron Daley, Danny Hansen, and defending series champion Michael Conti all running at or near the front. Unfortunately, pit stops and caution flags broke-up the dominance and it was downhill from there. Both Hansen and Conti sustained heavy crash damage in the second half of the race and finished thirtieth and thirty-first respectively.

Polesitter Nick Ottinger led two laps early and also looked like a strong contender for the win before crashing out on Lap 33. Ottinger finished forty-first and, like Conti and Hansen, is thankful the NASCAR PEAK Antifreeze Series regulations allow one drop week early in the season.

With Daytona on the books and Las Vegas next on the schedule, Alfalla and the rest of the drivers who survived the opening race carnage will look to build off their strong runs while the rest of the field hopes to get back on track.  Las Vegas Motor Speedway is the first of six 1.5 mile tracks on the 16 race schedule and in order to win the title, a strong 1.5 mile program is a must.  So it will be interesting to see which team comes out of the gate ahead of the pack when the green flag flies. Can Alfalla keep his early season momentum going, or will Conti and Ottinger once again be the drivers to beat at the downforce tracks? The team said that the surgery on Busch’s left mid-foot fracture was performed by Dr. Robert Anderson of OrthoCarolina. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver is resting comfortably and will remain hospitalized for observation.

Busch suffered the foot injury as well as a compound fracture of his right lower leg in a crash in Saturday’s XFINITY Series Alert Today Florida 300 at Daytona International Speedway. The accident forced him out of the season-opening Daytona 500, and his No. 18 Toyota Camry was driven by Matt Crafton.

On Tuesday, Busch was released from Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Florida, where he had surgery on his right leg, and he was transported home to Charlotte.

The team announced on Tuesday that David Ragan will serve as interim driver in place of injured Busch for the next several weeks beginning this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Sunday’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 (1 p.m. ET, FOX). Erik Jones will sub for Busch in the No. 54 car in the XFINITY Series’ Hisense 250 (Saturday, 2 p.m. ET, FOX Sports 1).

Samantha Busch tweeted about her husband’s surgery.

Unapproved left-side driver heat shield discovered

RELATED: Official NASCAR news release

NASCAR officials issued a written warning Wednesday to the Stewart-Haas Racing No. 10 Chevrolet team driven by Danica Patrick in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series after a rules violation found at Daytona International Speedway.

Officials discovered an unapproved left-side driver heat shield during opening day inspection at the 2.5-mile track on Feb. 13. According to an official NASCAR release detailing Section 20.11.2.2.2.1.b in the NASCAR Rule Book, "the outer exterior exhaust heat shield panel must follow the horizontal surface plane of the left side floorboard forward section to the bottom edge of the left side toe board."

The infraction also fell under the heading of the rule book’s Section 12-1: "actions detrimental to stock car racing."

Patrick is beginning her third full season in the Sprint Cup Series, and her first full campaign with Daniel Knost as crew chief. The former team engineer was promoted to crew chief of Stewart-Haas’ No. 41 team and driver Kurt Busch last season, then switched to Patrick’s No. 10 entry for the final three races of 2014.

Wednesday’s written warning sits on the lowest end of the spectrum of penalties detailed in NASCAR’s deterrence system, which was implemented ahead of the 2014 season. Warnings are detailed in Section 12.5.3.1 of the rule book, which reads in part:

"When appropriate, NASCAR will issue a Warning instead of a Penalty for certain types of very minor, first-time infractions. While the Warning is primarily for the information of the Member or team affected, NASCAR will also advise the garage that a warning has been issued to that Member or team. However, NASCAR will generally not specify or detail the infraction publicly unless it pertains to something new or unforeseen that the rest of the garage would benefit by knowing. Warnings are not appealable."

Patrick finished 21st in Sunday’s season-opening Daytona 500.
