DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Aug. 26, 2014) — NASCAR announced today its national series schedules for the 2015 season, featuring date enhancements to races at some of its most storied tracks along with a pair of long-term broadcast partners that will provide the exciting action to the sport’s fans.

"The 2015 NASCAR national series schedules promise to provide our fans with the compelling competition and storylines they so richly deserve," said Brian France, NASCAR Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "These enhancements to our race dates, particularly in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, will be of benefit to our fans and other stakeholders in our industry. From the start of the season at Speedweeks at Daytona culminated by our championship finales at Homestead-Miami, we’re looking forward to the great racing that will be delivered through our outstanding television network broadcast partners FOX, FOX Sports 1, NBC and NBCSN."

Key date changes featuring Darlington Raceway, Bristol Motor Speedway and Daytona International Speedway, some of NASCAR’s most tradition-laden tracks, highlight the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule. Following the 57th running of the Daytona 500 Feb. 22 on FOX, Atlanta Motor Speedway will host the season’s second race weekend (March 1), while Darlington returns to its traditional Labor Day weekend date (Sept. 6). The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series returns to Atlanta for the first time since 2012 as part of a unique doubleheader on Feb. 28 with the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Additionally, Daytona’s always-anticipated July race weekend takes on a different look as the Sunday, July 5 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race marks the return of broadcast partner NBC.

A big "West-Coast swing" during the schedule’s early stages spotlights markets where NASCAR’s fan base is growing and sponsor opportunities are on the rise. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR Nationwide Series run on three consecutive weekends, at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on March 7-8, Phoenix International Raceway on March 14-15 and Auto Club Speedway on March 21-22.

Bristol’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series spring date moves deeper into the calendar from mid-March to April 19. Dates for the spring races at Phoenix and Texas Motor Speedway (April 11) step back one week from their 2014 schedule slots.

From the season-opening weekend at Daytona through June’s events, FOX and FOX Sports 1 will combine to serve as the broadcast home of all races in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Starting in July at Daytona through the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, including each series’ championship finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, NBC and NBCSN will carry the second-half action for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR Nationwide Series. The entire 2015 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series schedule will be broadcast exclusively on FOX and FOX Sports 1. On radio, programming surrounding the 2015 NASCAR season along with the exciting national series race calls can be heard on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, Motor Racing Network (MRN) and the Performance Racing Network (PRN). The Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s radio network will carry the NASCAR Sprint Cup and NASCAR Nationwide Series events at IMS.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will feature 36 events including two standout non-points races – the Sprint Unlimited on Feb. 14 at Daytona and the 31st annual NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 16. Soon to have a new entitlement partner, the NASCAR Nationwide Series once again contests 33 races, while the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series increases to 23 events next season with the addition of the Atlanta date.

When running concurrently during NASCAR Sprint Cup Series companion weekends, the date changes are also reflected on the NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series schedules. There are nine companion weekends on the 2015 schedule that feature all three national series along with 18 combination weekends between the NASCAR Sprint Cup and NASCAR Nationwide Series and seven dual events where the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series run together.

There are six "stand-alones" on next year’s NASCAR Nationwide Series calendar, starting May 17 at Iowa Speedway. Included among those are two road-course races, at Mid-Ohio on Aug. 15 and Road America on Aug. 29. The later Road America date takes the place of the former Atlanta date. There are seven NASCAR Camping World Truck Series stand-alone races and two Wednesday appearances — on the dirt at Eldora Speedway on July 22 and at Bristol on Aug. 19. Iowa hosts the trucks three weeks earlier in 2015, on June 19. And the series again runs internationally on Aug. 30 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario.

Trucks of the 19, 00 and 30 were found to be too high at the rear spoiler

RELATED: Keselowski among three trucks penalized

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Aug. 26, 2014) — Three teams that compete in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series — the No. 00, 19, and 30 — have been penalized for post-race infractions committed following the Aug. 21 race at Bristol Motor Speedway.

The infraction for all three teams is a P2 level penalty as outlined in Section 12-4.1 of the rule book and violates sections:

·         12-1: Actions detrimental to stock car racing;
·         20B-12.8.1 Truck failed to meet post-race height requirements

As a result of this violation, crew chiefs Joel Shear (No. 00); Doug Randolph (No. 19); and Doug George (No. 30) have each been fined $5,000. Each team has also been penalized with the loss of 10 championship driver and 10 championship owner points. This includes drivers Cole Custer (No. 00) and Ron Hornaday Jr. (No. 30) along with owners Gene Haas (No. 00), Brad Keselowski (No. 19), and Steve Turner (No. 30).

Trio of UNOH 200 competitors receive P2 penalties post-Bristol

MORE: Official NASCAR release on penalties

NASCAR issued penalties Tuesday to three NASCAR Camping World Truck Series teams, including the winning team for driver/owner Brad Keselowski, for violations found in a post-race inspection last week at Bristol Motor Speedway.

NASCAR officials hit Brad Keselowski Racing, which fielded the winning truck for Keselowski’s first victory in the series after 61 previous attempts, with a P2 penalty under the new technical infraction deterrence system instituted in the offseason. The Turner Scott Motorsports No. 30 team for third-place finisher Ron Hornaday Jr. and the Gene Haas-owned No. 00 Chevrolet for eighth-place Cole Custer were also docked under the heading of P2.

The infractions are Section 12-1: Actions detrimental to stock car racing and 20B-12.8.1: Truck failed to meet post-race height requirements.

All three trucks measured too high at the rear spoiler after last Thursday’s UNOH 200 on the .533-mile track. NASCAR eliminated ride-height rules for the Sprint Cup Series during the offseason, but rules limiting ride heights in NASCAR’s other national series remain in effect.

Keselowski was docked 10 team owner points as owner of the No. 19 Ford. As a Sprint Cup regular and occasional competitor in the truck series, Keselowski is ineligible for points counting toward the truck driver standings. His crew chief, Doug Randolph, was fined $5,000.

NASCAR officials stripped Hornaday, a four-time series champion, of 10 points in the driver championship standings and deducted 10 team owner points for Steve Turner, owner of Hornaday’s No. 30 Chevrolet. Doug George, his crew chief, drew a $5,000 fine. The loss of 10 championship driver points knocks Hornaday back to fourth place behind Ryan Blaney, who moves up to third.

Custer, a 16-year-old driver in the NASCAR Next program, lost 10 points in the driver standings and Gene Haas, listed as the owner of record for the No. 00 Chevrolet, was penalized 10 points in the team owner standings as well. Joe Shear Jr., the team’s crew chief, was also hit with a $5,000 fine.

The series’ next race is scheduled this Sunday, Aug. 31 (1:30 p.m. ET, FOX Sports 1) at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, the circuit’s only international track.

Dates for all three national series unveiled with new network partners

PRINTABLE SCHEDULES: Sprint Cup Series | Nationwide Series | Camping World Truck Series

NASCAR released its 2015 schedule of races for all three of its national series on Tuesday, realigning the dates for several tracks, including moving the Southern 500 back to its traditional spot on Labor Day weekend.

Changes for Atlanta Motor Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway and Darlington Raceway are among the major alterations to the 36-race NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule, plus two non-points events. The season begins Feb. 22 with the season-opening Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway and ends Nov. 22 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, site of the season finale since 2002.

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will expand from 22 to 23 races next season, adding an early season date at Atlanta. The NASCAR Nationwide Series, which will gain new title sponsorship in 2015, remains at 33 races. The news was announced Tuesday on FOX Sports 1 and NBC Sports Network.

NASCAR Executive Vice President & Chief Racing Development Officer Steve O’Donnell credited stakeholders across NASCAR with working together to put out all three national series schedules at once in August, earlier than the usual mid-September release date.

"It was really a result of some great collaboration from the entire industry," O’Donnell said. "The tracks recognized this was an opportunity for us if we could collectively, with NBC and FOX coming on board, look at some of the venues that may have had challenged dates and put them in a better position to succeed.

"We also knew that getting the schedule out early for all three series was really important for the fans. If we were able to get that out ahead of time, a lot of our fans plan vacations around races so getting them notice early was really the goal for the entire industry."

The move of Darlington’s Sprint Cup date to Sept. 6 rekindles a sense of history for NASCAR’s oldest superspeedway, which hosted stock-car racing’s first 500-mile race in 1950. The crown-jewel event and the surrounding pageantry became a staple of early September in the South Carolina sandhills until 2003. Since then, the Southern 500 has been held in November (2004), on Mother’s Day weekend (2005-13) and mid-April (this season).

Next season, Darlington will become the next-to-last race before the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup postseason begins. "Back to its traditional roots of Labor Day, we anticipate an early afternoon start on Sunday for that event," O’Donnell said.

The 2015 Chase will be contested on the current 10 tracks, starting Sept. 20 at Chicagoland Speedway. Richmond International Raceway will remain host to the regular-season finale on Sept. 12.

Atlanta, which had held the Labor Day weekend spot since 2009, shifts its lone Sprint Cup race to March 1. The 1.54-mile track, which first hosted NASCAR’s top division in 1960, had held stock-car races in either March or early April with regularity from 1963 to 2010. Atlanta also adds the Truck Series to its late winter weekend; the Hampton, Georgia track last hosted the circuit in 2012.

As announced last Friday at the World’s Fastest Half-Mile, Bristol Motor Speedway‘s daytime Sprint Cup race will shift deeper into the spring on April 19, pushing it from race No. 4 this season to race No. 8 in 2015.

Other enhancements to the 2015 NASCAR schedules:

— Instead of crisscrossing the country four times in the early part of the schedule as in recent years, Atlanta’s move to race No. 2 on the Sprint Cup schedule allows for a Western swing before the calendar dives headlong into spring. Las Vegas Motor Speedway will remain the third race on the slate, but will be followed by Phoenix International Raceway (formerly race No. 2) and Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, which stays put as the fifth race of the year. The Nationwide Series, which runs companion events with the Sprint Cup tour for races No. 1 through 5, shifts its schedule accordingly.

"In talking to both SMI (Speedway Motorsports Inc.) and ISC (International Speedway Corporation), looking at the promotional efforts that could be put around three races in a row versus going east, west and back and forth, a lot of the marketing assets that a lot of the companies have in terms of hospitality, being able to do some really cool things for the fans, sometimes we weren’t able to deliver that for each race market because of the travel back and forth," O’Donnell said. "Now when you’re out west for three straight weeks, the fans can expect that same cool NASCAR experience at all three venues."

— The newly added truck race for Atlanta will form a rare same-day doubleheader with the Nationwide Series on Feb. 28. It’s the first time that a scheduled doubleheader has run at the same track since 2009 at Auto Club. "We put together a full day of Trucks and then Cup practice and then a Nationwide race," O’Donnell said.

— Daytona will host its traditional mid-summer Coke Zero 400 on a Sunday next season. "Probably late afternoon to primetime for Sunday," O’Donnell said of a start time, "and celebrate an additional fireworks show so we thought it was a great opportunity for the fans."

— The Sprint Cup schedule will add an idle weekend at the end of August, after Bristol’s annual night race and before the Southern 500. Adding the break will provide respite for drivers and teams on what is currently a run of 17 races in 17 weeks to the end of the season. The off weekends are April 5 (Easter), June 21 (Father’s Day) and August 30.

— The third off weekend for the Sprint Cup tour will become a road-racing weekend for the other two national series. The Nationwide Series’ now-annual trip to Road America in Wisconsin will slide from late June to late August, running the same weekend that the truck series returns for a third straight season to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Ontario.

"(The third Cup off weekend) is really just a quirk in the schedule in terms of where the weekends fall out," O’Donnell said. "If you knew you wanted to end Homestead traditionally where we did for the season before Thanksgiving, and you backed that up and have Labor Day in there as well as an anchor date, it just fell in place for an additional off week for 2015."

Charlotte Motor Speedway and Kansas Speedway will flip-flop their current October race weekends.

Kentucky Speedway‘s lone Sprint Cup race will return to early July. The track hosted its Sprint Cup debut on July 9, 2011, but has run in late June in every year since. It will continue as a tripleheader weekend for all three national series.

— The addition of a Father’s Day weekend off will move Sonoma Raceway‘s Sprint Cup date back one week, to the final weekend in June. O’Donnell said the Father’s Day off week for the Cup Series was "a result of some stakeholder conversations with some other competing sporting events that happen to be going on that weekend as well so we just thought it was best for us. The timing worked out great for us from a Father’s Day perspective to take that weekend off. A lot of our drivers are fathers. We’ll take that week off and head into Sonoma."

— The two non-points races will remain at the same dates and places on the schedule. The Sprint Unlimited kick-off race for the previous year’s Coors Light Pole Award winners will be run at Daytona the week before the Daytona 500. The NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race remains at Charlotte, one week ahead of the Coca-Cola 600 on Memorial Day weekend.

— NASCAR will race on the Ohio dirt of Eldora Speedway for a third straight year with the Camping World Truck Series. The third annual Mudsummer Classic will be scheduled July 22.

— When asked about a mid-week event for the Sprint Cup Series, O’Donnell said, "It’s certainly worked for the Trucks with Eldora and in Bristol as well. It is something that we’ve looked at from time to time, but a Cup event is so big and there’s so much effort into the travel and the assets that go into that event that I think that would be down the road if ever considered."

Wife, kids and parents tour Air Force One without four-time champion

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon got an invitation to tour Air Force One Tuesday as President Barack Obama traveled to Charlotte to speak to delegates attending the American Legion convention.

There was just one problem — Gordon was taking part in the first day of a two-day test scheduled for Hendrick Motorsports teams at Martinsville Speedway.

Gordon’s wife, Ingrid, their two children and Gordon’s stepfather and mother, John and Carol Bickford, were able to travel to Charlotte Douglas International Airport to tour the aircraft — and wound up getting to meet the President as well.

"I don’t like throwing this guy out there too much," Gordon said after wrapping up the first day’s work. "But it’s a situation where there was a young kid that I met in ’94 I guess, ’94 or ’95, at the Charlotte airport, and his family were big NASCAR fans. He came here and through the (race) shops. I was going through the airport to fly somewhere, and he was standing in front of me."

Gordon had just met the young man’s uncle, he said, "and he told me, ‘hey, there’s a young boy over there and is a huge fan of yours. If you could just say hi to him.’ So I said hi to him."

Twenty years later, Gordon said, the youngster now works at the White House.

"He’s a great guy, and a fan of mine, but I’m just as big of a fan of his and the work that he is doing," Gordon said.

"He was coming to Charlotte and asked me if we wanted to go do a tour of Air Force One. I said, ‘I’m testing.’ So Ingrid and the kids and my mom and dad were able to go.

"They didn’t know they were going to meet the President, they just thought they were going to go do the tour of Air Force One. But it worked out that they got to say hello to him as well."

Four-time Cup champion views Darlington as Southern 500 no matter the time

MORE: Darlington moves to Labor Day weekend | Official NASCAR release on 2015 schedule
PRINTABLE SCHEDULES: Sprint Cup Series | Nationwide Series | Camping World Truck Series

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Jeff Gordon hadn’t had a lot of time to digest the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule before he met with members of the media Tuesday at Martinsville Speedway.

But the four-time champion and current points leader did say what he saw "looks interesting."

NASCAR unveiled next year’s Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series schedules Tuesday at 5 p.m. Gordon and teammates Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kasey Kahne were wrapping up the first day of a two-day test at Martinsville when the announcement was made.

Headlining the moves for the Sprint Cup Series are changes for events at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway and Darlington Raceway. Atlanta’s Sprint Cup race had been held on the Labor Day weekend since 2009. Next season, it moves to March 1, one week after the season-opening Daytona 500.

Bristol’s spring race will be run in April instead of March while Darlington, which hosted the annual Southern 500 on Labor Day weekend from 1950 through 2003 before moving to a May date, moves back to the first weekend in September.

"The fact that we still get to go to Darlington, that’s what matters the most to me," Gordon, a five-time Southern 500 winner, said. "As well as what the fans are going to get to enjoy and what works for them, to come out and enjoy such an awesome race track with so much history.

"It’s always the Southern 500 to me. If I went to Darlington four times a year, I’d say ‘it’s the Southern 500.’ That’s just the way I look at Darlington.

"Bristol is an important race, a huge fan base there. You don’t want weather to deter fans that want to go to Bristol. I think that’s a good one.

"Atlanta, being the second race of the year … I like going to Atlanta anytime of the year as well, as long as it doesn’t snow like it did that one year then I think that’s a great choice to have second."

For 2015, Sprint Cup teams will run a "western" swing, with consecutive stops at Las Vegas, Phoenix and Auto Club Speedway in March.

The move could cut out at least one cross-country trip for teams.

"I like the western swing and how they have a bigger track, short track, bigger track so if the teams, and I haven’t talked to the team about how they would possibly coordinate that, but it is possible to make sort of a western hub and bring some equipment from the shop so you don’t have to go back and forth which could be a big help," Gordon said.

Las Vegas is a 1.5-mile track, Phoenix measures one mile and Auto Club is a 2-mile layout.

With Chase spot locked up, Junior aims to enter postseason on a high note

RELATED: Play NASCAR Fantasy Live | Sign up for RaceView today

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Dale Earnhardt Jr. knows he and his team will be in this year’s Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, but the Hendrick Motorsports driver said he doesn’t plan to coast through the two remaining races before the Chase begins.

"We can still try to get some wins," Earnhardt Jr. said Tuesday during a break in testing at Martinsville Speedway. "Those three bonus points for a win going into the Chase, they didn’t change that, did they?

"We’d like to get some more bonus points if we can. We had a real strong car Saturday night (at Bristol), but anytime you don’t finish well you want to kind of re-assert yourself and get the team’s confidence to where it needs to be going into the most important time of the season. So we’re going to run as hard as we can."

Earnhardt Jr. and his No. 88 team will roll into Atlanta, site of Sunday’s Oral-B USA 500 (ESPN, 7:30 p.m. ET), second in points and looking for their fourth win of the season. His 39th-place finish at Bristol was his second worst of the season, and was the result of damage from an incident that began with contact between Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin.

"Atlanta is a track that I love to race on," he said. "We haven’t been there since we changed the rule package and I’m excited to see how that changes the style of racing we have there, where the line’s going to be, where the speed’s going to be.

"We’re taking a brand new car there, so … it will be updated with all the latest and greatest and see what kind of speed we have."

Earnhardt Jr. is one of 12 drivers with one or more wins this season, thus all but guaranteed a spot in the 16-team Chase field. Others are still hopeful, although their opportunities are dwindling.

"You have to imagine that if you’re outside that window of making the Chase, those guys are going to have to gamble. They’ve got to," he said.

"You’ve got to try. So you might see some guys do some things that they typically wouldn’t do. It’s all going to be on pit road. I don’t see anybody doing … anything crazy out on the race track … but everybody’s going to run hard. I think the racing may remind you of kind of what we saw at Texas between Brad (Keselowski) and Jimmie (Johnson) when Brad won his championship (in 2012). They had a hell of a race there on that last restart. We’re probably going to see some action like that. I hope we do; I think the fans deserve it. It will be a lot of fun seeing some of these guys trying to get their spot in the Chase.

"… If you’re at Richmond and one of those guys not locked in and your chances are not looking that great, you’ve got to do something. It will be interesting to see how far these guys are willing to go to make something happen."

All four Hendrick Motorsports drivers – Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon and Kasey Kahne – took part in Tuesday’s test at Martinsville. Gordon and Johnson have a combined 16 wins on the flat, 0.526-mile track.

Earnhardt Jr., who has 11 top-fives here, and Kahne are still looking for their first victory at the track. All four teams are scheduled to return for additional testing on Wednesday.

Martinsville is the only short track among the 10 stops that make up the Chase, and a place where "you can get yourself into some trouble if you’re not careful," Earnhardt Jr. said.

"I’ve had a lot of good runs, just haven’t ever won here. This is one of those places that has a lot of history and it would mean the world for me to win here. We’ve had some cars that have run well, finished in top five several times, just never been that guy.

"We’re down here trying to find that extra little bit to give us a little bit more dominant of a race car and hopefully give us the edge we will need to come out of here with a win.

"We’ve always had competitive cars, top-five, top-10 cars, just never really had that car that was impressive over the rest of the field, that had what it takes to win here."

One of a few changes to NASCAR schedule

RELATED: NASCAR announces 2015 schedule for national series

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Bristol Motor Speedway‘s spring race weekend will move some two weeks or later into the season beginning next year, according to NASCAR’s Brett Jewkes.

Jewkes, Vice President, Chief Communications Officer for NASCAR, announced that next year’s spring race weekend at BMS would be held April 17-19, ending nearly a decade-long run of mid-March dates.

"NASCAR is not going to confirm anything until Tuesday, but we will confirm one thing to whet your appetite," he said in announcing the date change.

For the past nine seasons, Bristol’s spring date has fallen in March. Weather conditions have varied, occasionally warm and spring-like but more often cold and on at least one occasion, snowfall.

"We have the most passionate race fans in all of the sport and the greatest partners," BMS General Manager Jerry Caldwell said. "It wouldn’t be possible without the race fans, they repeatedly asked that we move to a more traditional spring date."

Race sponsor Food City signed a five-year extension earlier this year to remain title sponsor of the Food City 500 Sprint Cup Series race, said "we do this because we believe in the fans.

"That’s the business we’re in … we like when folks come visit the Tri-Cities," Smith said. "It’s been a little tough the last few years with some of the inconsistent weather we’ve had. When we get to mid April timeframe, we know that there’s a lot better chance we’ll get to be better hosts and more hospitable … and bring more people to the Food City 500. I compliment NASCAR and (SMI founder) Bruton (Smith) for working so hard on this."

The average temperature in the Tri-Cities region for April 19 is 69 degrees according to U.S. Climate Data and Accuweather.com.

There was no Sprint Cup race on the weekend of April 19th this season as it was the Easter holiday. Easter will fall on April 5 in 2015.

Bristol Motor Speedway hosts two NASCAR weekends annually — in addition to the spring races, the track’s annual August night races are among the most anticipated of the season.
