Ortho brand to serve as anchor partner on No. 16 Roush Fenway ride

RELATED: Play NASCAR Fantasy Live | Sign up for RaceView today

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Greg Biffle‘s No. 16 Ford will carry sponsorship from Ortho Insect Control for approximately one-half of next year’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races, according to Roush Fenway Racing officials.

The announcement was made Friday at Bristol Motor Speedway, site of Saturday night’s Irwin Tools Night Race.

"I’ve been very lucky throughout my career to be aligned with great companies … and I’m really excited to be going forward with Ortho on the car and to see some of the fun things we’re going to be doing together in promoting the brand," Biffle said.

Less than three weeks ago, it was announced that 3M, Biffle’s longtime primary sponsor, would be departing at season’s end to move to the No. 24 entry of Jeff Gordon at Hendrick Motorsports.

The Ortho brand is will appear on Biffle’s car this season for three races, beginning with next week’s event at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Officials have not announced the two remaining events.

It’s a reunion of sorts for the organization and Roush Fenway. The Scotts Company, which produces Ortho products, also produces a line of lawn care products under the Scotts brand, and previously sponsored RFR driver Carl Edwards for select events in 2005, ’10 and ’11. Scotts was also sponsor of the Nationwide Series race at Bristol in 2009, ’10 and ’11.

"With all of our sponsorships, and any of our marketing elements, we evaluate them every year," Mike Sutterer, Vice President Ortho, Regional Marketing, said. "Based on what the business objectives are and what the opportunities are.

"When this opportunity presented itself, we started talking with Roush Fenway; we have the relationship with them. It’s just the perfect fit for the Ortho brand, for what we’re looking to do with the brand. The consumer bases line up, the geography lines up, just a really, really great fit.

"So we decided to jump back in with Greg and the No. 16 team."

Although the company pulled back its sponsorship after the 2011 season, Sutterer said the relationship with Roush Fenway remained in place.

"It’s always been strong," he said. "There’s always been a great partnership. When mutually it made sense for a partnership, we got back in."

Sutterer didn’t rule out increased involvement in the future but said for now, sponsorship of the No. 16 entry would be the extent of the brand’s involvement.

"We’re always looking and evaluating what the best way to leverage our marketing dollars are," he said.

Steve Newmark, President of Roush Fenway Racing, said the racing organization had been discussing ways of "getting back to our roots and being true to our DNA, which is truly rooted in driver development.

"And Greg is obviously a product of that and now really the leader and mentor of our driver stable.

"We’ve reunited with Mark Martin and this is kind of the next in a litany of those actions that are helping fulfill that vision, which is getting back together with Scotts and Ortho. They have been an integral part of our history and obviously have had a lot of success."

Biffle, a former champion in the NASCAR Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series, has 19 career victories in Sprint Cup. He is winless this season and 11th in points headed into this weekend’s race at BMS.

Desperate driver-gladiators predict night of bump and run

RELATED: Play NASCAR Fantasy Live | Sign up for RaceView today

BRISTOL, Tenn. — For many, seeing Bristol Motor Speedway jutting out of the ground and stretching to the sky conjures images of historic NASCAR races at the fabled site.

Others take it one step further.

"It reminds me a little of the movie ‘Gladiator,’" Clint Bowyer quipped. "You know someone’s going to agitate you."

How fitting, considering this galactic arena is known as the Last Great Colosseum and has produced battle after battle ever since the series’ first event here in 1961.

Expect another one or 20 on Saturday in the Irwin Tools Night Race (7:30 p.m. ET, ABC) when the sun goes down and the lights come on.

"All Bristol races are rough, so to speak, and this is a tough place — a really, really tough place," said Roush Fenway Racing driver Greg Biffle, currently seeded last in the 16-driver Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup field. "You come in here and run as hard as you can. … You take chances and passes, do all the things you can do to win."

It was that last phrase that hung in the garage area Friday, like the early-morning fog that cloaks all those trees surrounding the track.

Perhaps more than any other facility on the circuit — or at least most of them — a driver running behind the leader can control his fate late in the race. On an oval that measures 0.533 miles, lapped traffic is always prevalent here. That means there’s often an opportunity for cars to close the gap on the leader and get on his bumper as the race winds down.

That was the case last year when Kasey Kahne harassed eventual race winner Matt Kenseth over the final five laps, moving all over the concrete in an attempt to make a clean pass — and ultimately not doing so, but also not initiating contact. It’s an incident drivers can see replaying itself this year, although perhaps ending without the grace Kahne showed in not intentionally spinning his competitor.

"If you are in that spot, you’re going to want to do whatever you can to get that win but … most people I don’t think are going to go wrong someone and wreck somebody for the win, but everybody races as hard as they can for the win," Kenseth said. "If you’ve got that opportunity and you can take it and make the pass then you’re going to do it."

But how? The new tire combination here produced conditions that favor drivers hugging the wall at the top of the track, perhaps even higher up than in recent years.

Moving drivers up the track to pass down low becomes a dangerous equation when there’s not much room with which to move the opponent without putting those cars into the outside wall.

The first round of Friday’s group qualifying ended with four drivers having incurred damage. Kyle Larson — the only driver to finish in the top five of both practice sessions — got loose three minutes into qualifying. His No. 42 Chevrolet brushed the outside wall and careened down to the inside, hitting there as well.

Aric Almirola, Casey Mears and Cole Whitt would follow suit with solo wrecks.

"Yeah, a lot of guys are going to hit the wall," Joey Logano said earlier Friday in predicting both Friday’s qualifying and Saturday’s race. "We’re going to have to find a way to be able to run up there all day and somehow have your car good enough to be able to pass. It’s going to come down to aggressive strategies and aggressive restarts."

That aggression is magnified both with the stakes of a victory for the winless drivers — Chase assurance — and the ability to bump and grind in this bullring.

Those winless drivers have to find that intrinsic balance between winning a race or earning the maximum amount points if they don’t win — all while being aggressive, but not so aggressive that a driver takes himself out of the race with mistakes.

It’s a unique, pressure-filled situation. The word AJ Allmendinger used to describe it was "desperation."

No matter the language you use, Saturday’s situation is clearly a recipe for volatility.

"It’s gonna be Bristol, baby," said Austin Dillon, who will wheel the famed No. 3 Saturday night. "It’s going to be fun."

For some.

Drivers have heated exchange on pit road following Food City 300

RELATED: Play NASCAR Fantasy Live

BRISTOL, Tenn. — There was beating and banging. There was late-race contact. There were near wrecks. It was Bristol at its best.

Or worst, depending on your point of view.

Ty Dillon and Regan Smith certainly saw the final 10 laps of Friday night’s Food City 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race differently, and Smith’s frustration spilled over onto pit road when both drivers parked following their respective top-five finishes. Dillon (fourth) and Smith (fifth) had a heated, animated discussion that included some finger-pointing … but no shoving.

FULL SERIES COVERAGE

It still got the garage buzzing. Some of Dillon’s crew members who were packing up the hauler saw the incident on the TV screen atop the scoring pylon, dropped their equipment and ran back to pit road in case their brute was needed. It never quite came to that, but it was obvious both drivers were peeved by the time it was over.

"This is Bristol, man," Dillon declared, a statement he would repeat several times when meeting with reporters. "I’m running for points and I’m trying to get the best finish possible. I squeezed him a couple of times, but I’m trying to get all I can. We’re trying to win this championship.

"I didn’t have any problems. Basically, Regan was upset that I got into him off the corner a couple times, but it’s under 10 (laps) to go. I hate that he’s upset, but stuff like that happens. As mad as he wants to be, it’s racing."

Smith was plenty angry, evidenced by his terse post-race comments. Like Dillon, he too is fighting for a championship. In that regard the JR Motorsports driver is in second place, 13 points behind teammate Chase Elliott, following Friday’s race. Dillon is third in the standings, 30 points behind.

Room is tough to come by on this 0.533-mile bullring, and Smith’s contention was that Dillon didn’t give him enough of it.

"His excuse is that he was tight," Smith said tersely following the race.

The 30-year-old driver seemed to have mellowed out somewhat as it neared midnight at the track. He sent the following tweet approximately an hour after that incident:

If he’s still seeking revenge, though, the series is back to another short track in two weeks at 0.75-mile Richmond International Raceway.

Until then, Dillon is content with how he handled himself both on and off the track.

"They can (say) whatever they want to, I’m going to race as hard as I can," Dillon said. "This is Bristol, man. It was good. I had a lot of fun."

Joe Gibbs Racing driver’s Chase confidence at a low after mediocre season

RELATED: Play NASCAR Fantasy Live | Sign up for RaceView today

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Wins aren’t the only thing that have been down for Matt Kenseth. His confidence in winning a second career NASCAR Sprint Cup Series title this year has also taken a bit of a tumble.

The 2003 premier series champion returns to Bristol Motor Speedway as the defending Irwin Tools Night Race champion and the fifth-place driver in the points standings. At this point last year, he was sixth in the standings. His top-fives through 23 races? Eight this year, compared to five last season.

The difference, of course, is victories.

The 42-year-old had a series-leading four of them one year ago (five after the Bristol race) and has zero this year. His No. 20 Toyota has yet to take that sweet ride to Victory Lane, and really hasn’t been close — he has no runner-up showings and only two third-place results, which came in back-to-back weeks at Charlotte and Dover.

"Last year we had four wins up to this point, were on a few poles, we led a ton of laps," Kenseth said. "Obviously we haven’t performed like that (in 2014). Last year, the way we were performing, my confidence for winning a championship was way greater, of course. It should be pretty obvious.

" … My confidence isn’t near as high with how we’re running at this point. I have a ton of confidence in my team and my organization, and my pit crew has been doing better than ever. We’ve just been off on speed a little bit."

It’s been that way for all of Joe Gibbs Racing, actually. It’s an interesting dynamic with Kenseth easily the highest of the organization’s three drivers in the points standings, but Kyle Busch (15th) and Denny Hamlin (20th) have a victory apiece. That victory guarantees Busch and Hamlin a spot in the postseason field — provided they attempt to qualify for the remaining three races — while Kenseth, although he’s in a fine spot, has no such assurances.

And just making the Chase isn’t enough for Kenseth or his teammates, which is why the missing speed problem has become amplified.

"Just because you’re in the Chase doesn’t mean you have a chance to win the championship," Kenseth said. "There’s going to be a lot of cars in the Chase that aren’t going to have a prayer.

"Certainly with three weeks to go until the Chase, even if all three of us get in, we realize that we have to be running better to have a legitimate shot at winning (the title). And we’re all working really hard at that."

Stefanyshyn, Pemberton promoted

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (August 21, 2014) — NASCAR announced today it has elevated the responsibilities of Steve Phelps and Steve O’Donnell with both assuming leadership roles in NASCAR’s Charlotte region offices effective immediately. The moves are designed to balance the company’s senior leadership across NASCAR’s various offices and accelerate the implementation of several key growth initiatives.

"In Steve Phelps and Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR has two seasoned leaders who are highly respected throughout the industry and have records of success in leading key functions within NASCAR," said NASCAR Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Brian France. "Our strong teams in Charlotte and Concord are engaged in many efforts critical to the sport’s future and we’re confident having these two leaders at the helm on a day-to-day basis will accelerate projects and help us drive innovation for the future."

Phelps, NASCAR Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, now will lead the company’s operations at NASCAR Plaza in Uptown Charlotte. Phelps, who will continue to report to NASCAR Chief Operating Officer Brent Dewar, retains all of his current responsibilities which include oversight of Brand Marketing, Integrated Marketing Communications, NASCAR Digital Media and NASCAR Properties. As part of this move, Phelps now also will assume oversight of Licensing, as well as Entertainment Marketing to bolster integration between the Los Angeles-based division and the other marketing and content disciplines operating primarily out of Charlotte.

O’Donnell assumes leadership of NASCAR’s Research & Development Center in Concord, North Carolina. Reporting to NASCAR President Mike Helton, O’Donnell has been named Executive Vice President & Chief Racing Development Officer and will add oversight of all operations in Concord, including Racing Development and Innovation, as well as Competition. O’Donnell maintains oversight of Racing Operations, Industry Services, Green Innovation, Touring / Weekly Series and Membership Services in addition to his new responsibilities.

Gene Stefanyshyn, who leads NASCAR’s Racing Development and Innovation group, and Robin Pemberton, who heads the Competition department, both have been promoted to senior vice president and now will report to O’Donnell.  Additionally, Tom Swindell who has played a key role on several recent Racing Operations initiatives has been assigned to Concord where he will work closely with O’Donnell on short- and long-term development projects.

Stefanyshyn, who joined NASCAR in May 2013, has made an immediate impact on the company in leading the transformation and modernization of NASCAR’s rules package development, testing and parts approval processes and set in motion a number of innovation projects for future racing development.  Pemberton, a long-time crew chief in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, has played a key role in the evolution of NASCAR’s officiating model, qualifying procedures and championship format since his arrival at NASCAR in 2004.

"Gene and Robin both bring invaluable experience and unique expertise to our team in Concord, and we are enjoying some of the best competition ever in NASCAR due to their efforts," said O’Donnell. "We are constantly looking to improve and while we have very good momentum on an array of projects, we believe we can make an already strong product even better in a variety of ways for the industry and most importantly, for the fans."

2012 Sprint Cup champ now one of 25 drivers to win in all three national series

MORE: Full race results | Updated series standings

BRISTOL, Tenn.—After 62 races—the last 20 of which were in his own equipment—Brad Keselowski is finally a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series winner.

"We did it," said Keselowski as he took the checkered flag in Thursday morning’s UNOH 200 presented by ZLOOP at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Keselowski’s joy may have been short lived. Following the race, NASCAR announced that his No. 19 truck, as well as the trucks driven by Cole Custer and Ron Hornaday Jr. measured too high at the rear spoiler during post-race inspection. More on these findings will be determined early next week.

Keselowski took the lead from Keystone Pole Award winner Kyle Busch on Lap 125 and never relinquished, despite repeated attempts by former NASCAR Drive for Diversity graduate Darrell Wallace Jr.

"It was a good battle and Bristol has always been a special track," Keselowski said. "(Crew chief) Doug Randolph and the team gave me a great truck. This thing took off and it was flying and I knew we had a shot at it right away from Lap 1. It’s (a) matter of putting it all together and not having any bad luck and we didn’t and everything came together and the team did a great job."

Busch, who scored his fourth pole of the season Wednesday afternoon, appeared to be the class of the field and had his sixth win of the season in his sights. But he found himself out of the racing groove 76 laps from the finish, stalling his momentum and allowing the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion to slip by and control the remainder of the race.

After persistent rain forced the 17th annual Bristol race to be rescheduled for the next morning, Busch led the green shortly after 10 a.m. Keselowski took advantage of lap traffic to squeeze by Busch on Lap 12 and led through the competition caution on Lap 50.

Stout work by Busch’s team on pit road gave him the lead back for the restart on Lap 53. Keselowski though wouldn’t let Busch escape as he retook command briefly on Lap 59 before Busch rolled to the point on Lap 61 and led until his miscue 63 laps later.

The final caution flag of the morning waived on Lap 147 for a four-truck accident on the backstretch, which allowed an attempt by the lead lap trucks to gang up and steal Keselowski’s thunder, but he would have none of it.

On the restart, Busch stalked Keselowski, but in their rearview mirrors, a hard-charging Wallace Jr. appeared and took second from his boss and set his sights on the Rochester Hills, Michigan native.

The No. 54 ToyotaCare Tundra closed up to within a truck length of Keselowski’s No. 19 Ford F-150 coming to the white flag, but Keselowski was able to fend off the former NASCAR Next driver to earn his first triumph in 62 NCWTS races.

With his win, Keselowski and father, Bob Keselowski, became the first father and son duo to win NCWTS races. The senior Keselowski won at Richmond International Raceway in 1997.

Furthermore, the 2010 NASCAR Nationwide Series champion became the 25th driver to win a race in all three of NASCAR’s national series. His first Sprint Cup win came at Talladega Superspeedway on April 26, 2009. His first Nationwide Series victory occurred at Nashville Superspeedway on June 7, 2008.

"For me, it’s a big day for me personally and professionally," Keselowski added. "Personally I think we dug into a lot of things with my family and the commitment they’ve had to the sport and specifically to this series for a long time. To race and make a living for quite a while then to beyond that to give me an opportunity to do the same in the latter stages of their involvement. It was a tough road and quite honestly we didn’t make it. It’s always a personal tragedy of sorts to go through that and that’s why for one of the many reasons I’m still involved in this series."

Wallace Jr., achieved his third runner-up finish of the season, but noted he respected Keselowski too much to wreck him for potentially his third win of the season.

"We had a very fast ToyotaCare Tundra and it’s shown, I’m proud of my guys," said Wallace Jr. "Brad’s good and I really had to wreck him to get by him, so I respect him and we’ll build off this and go to Canada, that’s a whole different animal in itself."

Behind Keselowski and Wallace Jr., Hornaday Jr. was third followed by Matt Crafton and Johnny Sauter. Busch fell victim to a flat tire and finished 24th.

Sauter continues to lead the series standings by eight points (487 to 479) over ThorSport Racing teammate Crafton.

The Truck Series returns to the track on August 31 for a trip across the border to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park for the running of the Chevrolet Silverado 250 (1:30 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1) in Bowmanville, Ontario.
