Coors Light Pole Qualifying is scheduled for Friday at 3:40 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1.

NATIONWIDE SERIES PRACTICE 1 | RESULTS

Rookie points leader Chase Elliott vaulted to the top of the leaderboard Thursday afternoon in opening NASCAR Nationwide Series practice at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Elliott, driving the No. 9 Chevrolet for JR Motorsports, turned a fast lap of 123.324 mph, which ran a few minutes past its allotted time in the original schedule. The rookie logged the most track time by far, running 106 laps to top the next-highest tally — 89 laps by Dakoda Armstrong.

Elliott’s speed eclipsed that of Kyle Busch, who turned a lap at 122.898 mph in the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 54 Toyota. Busch rides a streak of three straight Bristol wins in the Nationwide Series heading into Friday night’s Food City 300 (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN).

Kevin Harvick and Brian Scott tied for the third-best speed in a pair of Chevrolets. Harvick ran 122.178 mph in the No. 5 JRM Camaro and Scott clocked an identical speed in the Richard Childress Racing No. 2. Ryan Blaney completed the top five in the Team Penske No. 22 Ford.

Elliott carries a 10-point lead over JR Motorsports teammate Regan Smith in the series standings. Elliott Sadler ranks 16 points back in third place. Smith was seventh-best in first practice with Sadler 15th-best.

Milka Duno, bidding to become the first Hispanic woman to compete in a NASCAR national series race, was 41st-fastest of the 43 drivers to participate in opening practice, more than 1.2 seconds off Elliott’s time. Only 40 cars will make the field for Friday night’s 300-lap race, the 23rd of 33 events in the 2014 season.

Trucks for race winner Keselowski, Hornaday, Custer ‘too high at the rear spoiler’

BRISTOL, Tenn. — The trucks of three drivers that finished in the top 10 at Bristol Motor Speedway, including that of race winner Brad Keselowski, had issues during post-race technical inspection here Thursday.

FULL SERIES COVERAGE

Latest news
Standings
Schedule

According to NASCAR, the trucks of Keselowski, third-place finisher Ron Hornaday Jr. and Cole Custer, who finished eighth "were too high at the rear spoiler" following the UNOH 200 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event.

Any penalties that may be forthcoming as a result of the infractions would be determined early next week. NASCAR eliminated rules governing ride heights in its premier series this season, but those restrictions remain in place for its other national series.

Keselowski led three times for 119 laps in the 200-lap race to earn his first career win in the series.

Hornaday ran a solid third for nearly the entire event while Custer, making just his fifth career start in the series, ran in the top-10 all morning.

Thursday’s race was originally scheduled for Wednesday night, but postponed due to rain.

After two consecutive road races, rookie extended points lead from two to 10

MORE: Cope to be Elliott’s crew chief in 2015
RELATED: Play NASCAR Fantasy Live

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Chase Elliott and Greg Ives have exactly one year to win the NASCAR Nationwide Series title together. The 18-year-old rookie driver is putting all the pressure squarely on his own shoulders.

With Ives rejoining Hendrick Motorsports as crew chief for Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 2015, the tenure for this current pairing ends in November at Homestead. They both hope that occasion is marked with a large, silver trophy.

FULL SERIES COVERAGE

"If that doesn’t happen, I think it’s on me," Elliott said Thursday in advance of the first practice on the 0.533-mile high-banked oval. "I’m working as hard as I can work for him in that aspect. He is, without a doubt, 100 percent in my mind, a championship crewchief, at any level. For me, I know we have cars capable of competing and winning races week in and week out. I certainly want to get the job done for him and the rest of our guys as well."

Elliott has extended his points lead after a difficult stretch of back-to-back races, with the Nationwide Series visiting consecutive roadcourses in Watkins Glen International and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Elliott finished sixth and fourth, respectively, in those events and increased his lead in the standings from two points to 10 in that time.

This week’s return to Bristol is one in which Elliott seeks retribution. He called his spring showing disappointing, despite finishing ninth, Elliott was displeased with his qualifying performance and said going down a lap early prevented the No. 9 team from challenging for the victory.

"It’s a season with a lot of ups and downs, and I would certainly like to get rid of our downs. And unfortunately I think Bristol in the spring race was one of our downs," Elliott said. "I hope this weekend is better in all aspects."

Buescher’s Mid-Ohio victory gave the Nationwide Series three rookie winners

RELATED: Play NASCAR Fantasy Live

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Chris Buescher’s first 22 races in the NASCAR Nationwide Series have been thus far bookended by the very bad and the very good.

After not qualifying for the season-opening race at Daytona International Speedway in February, Buescher received a tangible result as proof of his resurgence — a victory last week at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

FULL SERIES COVERAGE

In his customary No. 60 Roush Fenway Racing Ford, Buescher beat-and-banged his way past Brian Scott and Regan Smith for his first career win, a moment that both gave the driver and his team validation while also demonstrating the tremendous talent — and depth — of this year’s rookie class.

"We took a blow there at the beginning of the year," Buescher said. "That was tough. It’s not that we weren’t fast enough, just the weather and new qualifying format, everything worked against us there. That was a really tough weekend.

"Obviously that hurt us in the points right away. It put us in a hole we’ve been trying to claw our way out of since. We’re not out of that hole yet by any means."

Still, he’s closer to the top of said hole than the bottom. With exactly zero points following the first race, Buescher has been grinding his way up the standings since. His victory keeps him at seventh — probably still too far back to make a title push, he said, but enough to thrust his name into the discussion of this year’s heralded rookie class.

Points leader Chase Elliott and fourth-place Ty Dillon both rank higher than Buescher based off their results … and perhaps dominate the rookie conversation, in part, because of their particular pedigrees.

The 18-year-old Elliott owns three victories this year and Dillon’s win came at fabled Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Those moments have come with Buescher toiling to make his way both through the field and up the standings.

Now the 21-year-old Texas native has a victory to match those two drivers, who were already part of the first rookie class since 2005 to produce multiple drivers with victories, a list that now swells from two to three.

"We knew we had the speed, the talent, to do it and beup there in that rookie class," Buescher said. "Ty’s got his win, Chase has his several … it’s just cool to be added to that group. We’ve got a very stout field of rookies so it’s been tough every week. Not only do you have those (Sprint) Cup guys and those other veterans, but you have those rookies you have to outrun as well.

"It’s a very, very impressive field. It makes us all better, though, and makes that first win that much better as well."

So, what did the first win change for Buescher? Not a whole lot, he said. That was obvious when he rolled into the shop Monday morning at 6:30, same as he always does.

Perhaps the biggest benefit was simply executing something the team knew it could do all along. And knocking that first win out of the way could clear the decks for another to follow.

"Short tracks have pretty much been our strong suit this year, and we’re coming here trying to repeat," Buescher said. "We know we can do it now. It was just a matter of getting that first one out of the way.

"We’re going to get some more speed out of our cars and win some more races this year."
