Wife of Hall of Fame engine builder passed away on Sunday

RELATED: Lynda Petty, wife of ‘The King’ passes away

The Petty family is dealing with another loss.

Patricia Petty, wife of NASCAR Hall of Fame engine builder Maurice Petty, died Sunday, according to Richard Petty Motorsports. Patricia’s passing comes six weeks after the loss of Lynda Petty, wife of seven-time champion driver and Hall of Fame member Richard Petty.

"We all love Patricia. She was another cornerstone in the Petty family and was always there for Maurice and allowed us to do what we loved to do," Richard Petty said in a statement released by RPM. "She was just another special part of the family. We’ll miss her and give our love and support to Maurice and his family at this time."

Brothers Richard and Maurice Petty comprised part of a Petty family dynasty that netted 200 victories and seven titles in the sport’s premier series. Patricia’s loss came one day before the 14th anniversary of the passing of Adam Petty, grandson to Richard and Maurice, who died in a crash at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in 2000.

Two of Maurice and Patricia’s sons, Timmy and Mark, have gone on to work in NASCAR. Timmy still restores engines in his father’s old shop, but his life lessons came from both parents. “He had a good teacher," Maurice said in a 2013 interview. "His momma."

Brian France, NASCAR Chairman and CEO, offered sympathies. “NASCAR offers its deepest condolences to Maurice Petty and the entire Petty family on the loss of Maurice’s wife, Patricia Petty,” France said. “Maurice’s decades of excellence in our sport deservedly earned him a place in the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and Patricia’s loving support was integral to his legendary career. She will be dearly missed.”

NASCAR Hall of Fame executive director Winston Kelley also offered a brief statement on the passing of Patricia Petty.

"On behalf of the entire NASCAR Hall of Fame team, I would like to offer our most sincere condolences to Maurice and the entire Petty family on the passing of Patricia Petty. Like many racing wives, Patricia was the foundation and rock of the family. She always had a big smile and warm welcome for those she met and was a huge part of the NASCAR industry and Maurice’s success. Sitting beside her the day that Maurice was selected for the 2014 Class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame last May and watching her enjoy all the festivities of Maurice’s induction this past January will always be some of my most special memories. Patricia, or Mama Trish as she was affectionately known, will be deeply missed, but her memory and impact on so many will live on forever. "

Points leader, four-time premier series champion ‘having a great time’

RELATED: Play NASCAR Fantasy Live | Sign up for RaceView today

The age issue has been there before. Even from the beginning, when he made his NASCAR Cup debut at the age of 21, youngest by far in a field of 43.

It surfaced again this past week, brought back to the forefront when he was honored by Charlotte Motor Speedway officials and the NASCAR Hall of Fame for the 20th anniversary of his first Sprint Cup win.

Yes, Jeff Gordon’s gotten older. But at 42, one could hardly call him old.

Talk of retirement crops up as often as conversations concerning potential titles these days. Given his recent results on the race track, he doesn’t discount the former, but stresses the latter.

"The whole retirement thing, I think, is thrown out there too much," Gordon said Saturday night, long after winning the 5-hour Energy 400 at Kansas Speedway. “And I’m probably somewhat to blame.

"But there’s no secret – I’m going to be 43 this year, but man, if 43 is like this, I can’t wait for 50.

"This is all right. I’m having a good time. That’ why I feel young, because I’m just having a great time."

Success has a way of doing that – of peeling away the years, dulling the aches and pains that come with hustling a stock car around the track for more than two decades.

Saturday night’s victory was Gordon’s 89th. No active driver has won more often, and only two in the history of the series — Richard Petty (200) and David Pearson (105) — have more career victories. Both Petty and Pearson are enshrined in the NASCAR Hall of Fame; Gordon’s day is coming.

A four-time champion, Gordon has gone winless for the season only three times in his career. With longevity has come success.

He took over this year’s points lead five weeks ago in Texas, and solidified it Saturday night in Kansas.

Title talk is expected to continue – the victory likely earned Gordon and the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports team one of the 16 coveted spots in this year’s Chase For The NASCAR Sprint Cup. Nine drivers have now won at least one race, with 15 more opportunities awaiting between now and the cutoff later this year at Richmond.

Crew chief Alan Gustafson, praised when his driver is successful and blamed when he isn’t, wore a look of relief afterward. Returning to the winner’s circle for the seventh time with Gordon, Gustafson said the victory was validation, but knows what lies ahead.

"The key is always to peak at the right time," he said, "and get the team in a great position. That’s something that we’ve got to be very careful of … it’s tough to sustain ultimate performance over 36 weeks.

"We’ve done a pretty good job over the first part of the season. We’ve got go be wary that we don’t slip and don’t get complacent, so when we get into the time that really is going to matter, we’re not flat. I think we’ve got to be focused on that, too."

Earlier this year, Gordon talked of his age, and the toll 20-plus years had taken on his body. He joked that winning a fifth title could push him into retirement, giving him reason to walk away while still on top.

Now, fresh off a win and still leading the points standings, talk of retirement has subsided. Talk of titles has not.

"I just feel so competitive out there,” Gordon said. “And that makes me feel young again."

Six-time Sprint Cup Series champ has won four All-Star Races in 12 career starts

Jimmie Johnson will seek his third straight NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race victory at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Saturday night. Johnson won the 90-lap event last year after starting 18th out of 22 cars, and was the 2012 winner. Currently seventh in the points standings, Johnson is winless through the first 11 Sprint Cup Series races of 2014. He’s won the All-Star race four times in 12 starts, with an average finish of 6.2, so history suggests Saturday night at CMS could be an opportunity for the six-time premier-series champion to get into Victory Lane. Joey Logano, a two-time winner this season, placed second to Johnson last year. Logano has never won an All-Star race, but has an average finish of 4.3 in three starts.

Hendrick Motorsports driver picks up first top-five finish of season

RELATED: Play NASCAR Fantasy Live | Sign up for RaceView today

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Kasey Kahne may have not found victory at Kansas Speedway, but he may have discovered something just as important at the Sunflower State track — speed.

And not necessarily in Saturday night’s first Sprint Cup Series race under the lights at the 1.5-mile facility. It was at a Goodyear tire test here in April where the Hendrick Motorsports driver said his No. 5 team first began to find the pace they had been missing, and Saturday night the knowledge gained in that session translated into Kahne’s first top-five finish of the year.

"Our biggest deal is we’ve just been slow this season. Really haven’t been inconsistent or anything like that, we’ve just been slow each week," he said after placing third. "We tested here, we had that Goodyear tire test, and I felt like from that point on, we’ve actually had really fast cars."

Latest news
Standings
Schedule

It didn’t always show — at Richmond two weeks ago Kahne had some late pit road issues that dropped him to 14th at the end, even though he started fourth and ran in the top 10 for the bulk of the event. Kahne finished eighth last week on the Talladega restrictor-plate track, and he and crew chief Kenny Francis put their Kansas test data to good use with solid practice sessions on Friday.

Saturday came the payoff. Kahne led 22 laps, one shy of his season-high, and despite starting 17th ran in the top five for much of the night. Although he was never really in position to challenge winner Jeff Gordon or runner-up Kevin Harvick at the end, a season-best finish made that fact much easier to take.

"I think the Goodyear test here, for whatever reason, we were able to try some things and just look at stuff a little differently than what we had been," Kahne said, "and it helped the 5 team, my guys, myself and Kenny and (engineer) Chris (Spaulding), our communication together. It’s helped us a lot since then. I feel like that’s been the key, and ever since we tested here, we’ve ran much better and been a lot more competitive."

Although Kahne had shown promise in the first two events this year on 1.5-mile intermediate tracks — he was eighth at Las Vegas and 11th at Texas — he wasn’t the contender in those races that he was Saturday night. Although Kahne led a season-best 23 laps earlier in the year at Darlington, that was the product of tire strategy, and he still ended up with a season-worst finish after being involved in a crash later in the event.

Saturday was completely different — thanks to his previous trip to Kansas to test.

"We got to the front there for a little bit, led some laps," Kahne said. "It felt really good at that point in time, and then we got a little tighter later and didn’t free up or tighten up enough there at the end when we put four tires back on. We just tried to run rights for too long. It was still a really solid run. Nice to run up front and be able to race hard the whole night. It was good for us."
