NASCAR will implement a new stage-break procedure for its national series beginning this weekend at Iowa Speedway, the sanctioning body announced Thursday.

According to officials, the procedure will apply when a natural caution occurs with 10 or fewer laps remaining in the stage. In that event, the stage will be deemed complete at the time of caution, and that same caution period will serve as the scheduled stage break.

RELATED: Iowa weekend schedule | Track 2027 schedule announcements

When the field returns to the start/finish line under yellow, the leader will receive the green-and-white checkered flag along with the yellow. The finishing order of the top 10 at the time of caution will be determined using all available resources, including scoring loops and video replay, just as it is whenever stage points are awarded.

The updated procedure comes after competition officials evaluated the length of caution periods and racing around stage ends to reduce the amount of time spent under caution. This process will be applied for the remainder of the 2026 season.

The Cup Series headlines the weekend at Iowa with Sunday’s Iowa Corn 350 (3:30 p.m. ET, USA Network, HBO Max, MRN Radio, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). The O’Reilly Auto Parts Series races Saturday at the 0.875-mile short track (5 p.m. ET, The CW, ESPN Unlimited, MRN Radio, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

Two tracks will return to more traditional slots on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule in 2027, with Bristol Motor Speedway and New Hampshire Motor Speedway trading places between the regular season and The Chase.

The move, unveiled Thursday morning in dueling announcements by both Speedway Motorsports facilities, puts the annual Bristol Night Race back in its familiar late-summer slot on Aug. 14 after a seven-year run in the postseason. New Hampshire will take Bristol’s place in The Chase next year, marking its 16th postseason appearance as the main event for a Sept. 25-26 race weekend.

RELATED: 2027 NASCAR schedule tracker | Latest 2027 news, announcements

Bristol’s under-the-lights spectacle had occupied a mid- to late-August slot since 1978, when Hall of Famer Cale Yarborough prevailed in the first night race at the 0.533-mile Tennessee track. That changed in 2020, when Bristol moved into the postseason rotation under the elimination-era format.

Bristol will hold a pair of NASCAR race weekends next year, both tripleheaders. The NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will join the Cup Series for the April 9-11 and Aug. 12-14 weekends.

New Hampshire will rotate back into The Chase on Sunday, Sept. 26, after being outside the postseason picture for eight of the last nine seasons. Before that stretch, the Loudon track was a Chase race venue from 2004 through 2017, its most recent season hosting two annual Cup Series events.

Next year’s Cup Series race is slated to be the third of 10 races in The Chase. The weekend will also feature the opening race of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Chase on Saturday, Sept. 25.

Both tracks still have races to run this season as the NASCAR calendar enters its stretch run. New Hampshire comes first Aug. 23 (3 p.m. ET, USA Sports, HBO Max, PRN Radio, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) as the penultimate race in the Cup Series regular season. This year’s Bass Pro Shops Night Race follows, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19 (7:30 p.m. ET, USA Sports, HBO Max, PRN Radio, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) as the third race in The Chase.

The rest of the 2027 NASCAR schedule will be announced in the coming weeks.

After a week off — for the first time since Easter Sunday in early April — the Cup Series will return to the track this week amidst the cornfields of Iowa, making its third-ever trip to Iowa Speedway. The race will kick off a stretch of four weeks to conclude the regular season, taking us through not only Iowa but also Richmond, New Hampshire and Daytona, with berths in the Chase (and seeding) on the line.

In other words, the dog days of summer are just about over now; it’s officially crunch time for drivers and teams with the championship in sight. So let’s go through the key storylines to watch — and the drivers set to do best — in the final stretch run before the Chase begins.

To aid us in that effort, we’ll enlist my track-projection system, which looks at a driver’s recent performance at any given track — as well as its most comparable tracks — to create a projected Driver Rating that serves as a strong predictor of finishing quality at that specific track. As part of that, we can also look at which drivers are projected to perform better at each remaining track than they usually do overall — effectively a measure of schedule favorability (or not) that might make a big difference over the next month of action.

Put it together, and the projections point to a few drivers and teams for whom the remaining schedule could reshape their place in the standings before the regular season is done. Here are four big takeaways from the projected numbers:

Penske is poised for a big stretch run

This time a month ago, we noted how the pressure was on Team Penske in a way they’re not accustomed to: Instead of chasing championships, they were simply trying to get their non-Ryan Blaney drivers — Joey Logano and Austin Cindric — into the Chase at all.

Ever since, both the No. 22 and No. 2 teams have responded with better results. Logano finished in the top 10 at Atlanta (one of his favorite stomping grounds), dominated at North Wilkesboro and scored another podium at Indianapolis. Cindric, meanwhile, was nothing if not consistent: He finished precisely 14th in three consecutive races — and exactly 13th the two races before that — to move into the top 16 and build a 38-point lead over 17th-ranked Ryan Preece.

Now, the Penske cars are in a much stronger position, and it should get even stronger from here. Blaney and Logano have the two highest projected ratings across Iowa, Richmond, Loudon and Daytona. And while Cindric ranks 15th at 76.0, that’s both higher than his usual average and higher than Preece (69.1) and Erik Jones (60.0), the two drivers directly below him in the standings.

a chart explaining which drivers could end the regular season with a bang.

Brad Keselowski could be dangerous

Directly below Preece and Jones, sitting 50 points outside the No. 16 spot, is Keselowski — still a jarring sight to see for the 2012 Cup Series champion. Keselowski is looking for a Chase return this year, but if the season ended today, he would miss The Chase (or the playoffs) for the third time in five seasons.

Fortunately for the No. 6 team, though, there are still races left to run — and Keselowski could be the most dangerous name floating below the cutline over these next four weeks.

a graph detailing brad keselowski's next four races.

Keselowski is projected for above-average ratings at each of the remaining four tracks — which is already a step up for a driver with a below-average rating of 68.6 this season — and he rises to an 88.2 at Iowa this week after finishing 10th here in 2024 and third last season, leading 73 total laps. That projection comes with pressure to make the most of it, but it represents a big opportunity for Keselowski first and foremost.

That opportunity is compounded by the fact that the two drivers squeezed between Keselowski and the cutline (Preece and Jones) are projected to do substantially worse over the next month, both relative to their own typical form and Keselowski’s projection. It could be setting up a last-minute charge by Keselowski for the final Chase slot.

Tyler Reddick may see his slide continue

After a remarkable start to his 2026 campaign, one of the dominant midseason storylines this year has been the cooling-off of Tyler Reddick, who, even after a respectable 10th-place run at Indianapolis, has more finishes of 30th or worse than top-10 finishes since the end of May.

The cold stretch saw Reddick lose his grip on the top spot in the standings to Denny Hamlin at Sonoma, and his gap over Blaney for No. 2 is down to 36 points as well. And as noted above, Blaney is projected to be the best performer in Cup between now and the end of the regular season.

More bad news for the No. 45: of all the drivers suited to these last four tracks, Reddick wouldn’t really be included on that list. Yes, he won the most prestigious stock-car race in the world at Daytona to start the season in February, but he only had an 81.7 rating as he did it — a testament to the track where, very often, the best driver and the winner aren’t the same (more on that later). And he has a mixed record at Iowa, Richmond and Loudon — plus comparable tracks — with an average finish of 24.7 at the three tracks when he last ran there a year ago.

a chart detailing who could gain or lose over the rest of the regular season.

He’s not alone. Among Chase contenders, Shane van Gisbergen is also facing an unfavorable set of remaining tracks, though that disadvantage is perhaps overstated if his recent run of improvement on non-road courses is to be believed. And while Chase Briscoe and Chris Buescher are in no danger of losing a spot in the Chase, they could be vulnerable to challenges in their standings positions from Christopher Bell or even William Byron down the stretch due to poor track fit.

Daytona is (as always) the wild-card

Although its power to scramble the postseason field has been muted somewhat by the re-introduction of points racing via the Chase (and the mothballing of the win-and-in policy), Daytona remains singularly capable of turning the season upside down.

For drivers above the cutline, the chaos of superspeedway racing makes for a regular-season finale to be feared — and for a sense of urgency to build up as much cushion as possible in the points beforehand. At the same time, Daytona can offer a lifeline for drivers looking for a last-ditch Hail Mary to keep their championship hopes alive. And no matter who you are, this is the track where everything you think you know going in can get tossed out the window by the time it’s all said and done.

We can see this when comparing the projections at Daytona to the other stretch-run tracks on the schedule:

a chart detailing how vulnerable daytona is.

For most of the top drivers, their projection at Daytona is much closer to the rest of the pack than it is at short tracks and ovals — because we can be much less confident they’ll perform well in the bedlam of the high banking and the draft than at a typical track. By the same token, the lower-rated drivers are much closer to average in their projections at Daytona, due to the same randomness factor.

That means the World Center of Racing carries disproportionate implications for the Chase bubble, even in today’s points-based format. For the drivers currently holding a Chase position, the goal is to make Daytona matter as little as possible. But for those still chasing their spot, it’s the opposite — stay close enough at Iowa, Richmond and Loudon to give NASCAR’s ultimate wild-card a chance to deal you the hand you need.

THOMPSON, Conn. – In the two decades Matt Hirschman has competed on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, a win at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park had eluded him.

Thompson has long been a special track for Hirschman, who spent a good portion of his childhood watching numerous Modified legends compete around there like his father Tony, who won eight Modified Tour races at the track. Each trip to the historic facility only fueled Hirschman’s desire to join the notable list of Thompson winners.

Hirschman checked off that box Wednesday in his 34th Thompson start. The speed in his No. 60 Bar Harbor Bank & Trust Modified enabled Hirschman to pass polesitter Austin Beers early on, but he made sure to credit his pit crew for keeping him ahead during the lone caution of the evening.

“When you have a car that’s been a winning car all day out of the trailer, you need [your pit crew] to do their part as well,” Hirschman said. “It was a perfect day. I missed the pole by a little bit, but with the way this car was running, I probably looked more like Tony Hirschman out there [on Wednesday] than what I’ve done here in my career.”

Hirschman has always had a great mentor in Tony to rely upon for advice on how to navigate Thompson, but he never seemed to find Victory Lane there for one reason or another.

The first Modified Tour event at Thompson for Hirschman in 2005 ended in a crash after 92 laps. Misfortune followed Hirschman across his ensuing four Thompson starts, all of which ended with him behind the wall.

Despite the growing pains, Hirschman was determined to find a rhythm at a track where his father, Richie Evans, Mike Stefanik and so many others had won at before. The first top five for Hirschman at Thompson came in the 2007 Modified Tour season-opener. One year later, he earned his first runner-up finish at the track.

As the years progressed for Hirschman on the Modified Tour, Thompson continued to provide mixed results. Yet top-five finishes in his last three trips to Thompson with Pee Dee Motorsports left Hirschman optimistic that he was close to that elusive first series victory at the complex.

Hirschman’s faith was grounded in reality Wednesday. He was the only driver to break into the 18-second bracket during the final practice session. Although Hirschman did not get the pole, the speed he showcased earlier in the day emanated once again after finding his way around Beers.

Like Hirschman, Beers was also hoping to secure his first Thompson Modified Tour victory in his 12thstart at the track. Beers was thrilled to earn his second Thompson pole and finish runner-up Wednesday, which he believes are indications that his team is returning to their championship form from 2025.

“[Hirschman’s] taken a lot of wins from me, but he was the class of the field [on Wednesday],” Beers said. “We were a tick snug on that second run, but it was a good points day for us. We’ve been consistent since Oxford [Plains] when we had that little mishap. We’re getting better and better every week and we’re going to keep fighting.”

Beers departs Thompson still in search of his first checkered flag of the 2026 season. For Hirschman, he now has two Modified Tour victories on the year to go along with four top fives in the last five races.

The Thompson triumph carried plenty of catharsis for Hirschman. He always knew he could win at the complex since making his first Modified Tour start there 21 years ago, but circumstances never worked out in his favor.

Hirschman felt Wednesday was going to be different from the moment he unloaded. Everyone at Pee Dee Motorsports, including himself, did their part to ensure Hirschman finally got to enjoy a Thompson victory.

“We’ve had pole speed in some of these recent races,” Hirschman said. “We were close at Claremont with a second, but today we had a car off the trailer that could win this race tonight. My guys probably could tell I knew everything mattered tonight. I was getting on some of them, but I came in locked and loaded today.

“I had a good night sleep [on Tuesday]. I came here to take care of business, and I needed everyone to get on that same page.”

Patrick Emerling’s win streak came to an end at three races, but he still enjoyed a solid points night by finishing third. Chase Dowling secured a fourth-place finish, with Matt Swanson rounding out the top five.

The rest of the top 10 consisted of Eric Goodale, Paulie Hartwig III, Stephen Kopcik, Doug Coby and Tyler Rypkema.

Next up for the Modified Tour will be the prestigious Mohegan Sun 100 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Saturday, Aug. 22. The green flag will wave at 4:30 p.m. ET with FloRacing providing live coverage of all the on-track action.

This season marks the second of NASCAR’s seven-year media rights agreements for the NASCAR Cup Series with four best-in-class distribution partners — FOX Sports, USA Sports, Amazon’s Prime Video and TNT Sports.

Here’s a breakdown of how to watch NASCAR races on NBC, USA Sports and Peacock and the NBC Sports App in 2026.

USA Sports starts its coverage on Aug. 9 at Iowa Speedway and will run for 14 weeks through the Cup Series championship race at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Nov. 8.

Four races will appear on NBC — Daytona International Speedway (Aug. 29), Talladega Superspeedway (Oct. 25), Martinsville Speedway (Nov. 1) and Homestead-Miami (Nov. 8). The remaining 10 races will air on USA Network. The NBC Sports events are available on Peacock via a “single live event” tile in the Sports category page.

Additionally, all NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series races will be broadcast by The CW. Cup Series practice and qualifying during NBC’s portion of the schedule can still be found on Max and truTV. O’Reilly sessions will air on The CW, and FOX Sports will continue to broadcast practice and qualifying for the Craftsman Truck Series.
