Six-time champ, needing a boost, will start 32nd Sunday

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — It is not the deepest in the field Jimmie Johnson has ever started a race in NASCAR’s Chase for the Sprint Cup.

But his 32nd-place qualifying spot for Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway (ESPN, 2 p.m. ET) is the furthest back in a Chase race since his 32nd-place qualifying run at Homestead-Miami Speedway in 2005 — a year before his first title.

Johnson and his Hendrick Motorsports No. 48 team finished 40th at Homestead.

Given the new format for the Chase, a similar result here Sunday wouldn’t be the death knell for the six-time champion, but it would certainly put his title hopes in jeopardy.

Johnson’s car isn’t slow — he was 14th in Friday’s opening practice and 17th in Saturday’s opening session. Instead, it was a spinout on the second of two qualifying laps Friday that relegated the 39-year-old to a poor starting position.

It’s just the type of start the series’ leading Chase race winner hoped to avoid.

During a Friday gathering with the media, Johnson said the 1.5-mile track has begun to show slight signs of aging since a repave project two years ago.

Warm temperatures could create a situation in which the track surface would take more rubber, thus allowing the racing groove to widen and create more opportunities for passing. But with cooler temperatures Friday and Saturday, that hasn’t been the case, making a poor starting position much more difficult to overcome. Sunday temperatures are expected to be in the low 70s.

"It puts a huge importance on today in qualifying and the pit road (pit stall) pick," Johnson said prior to his qualifying misstep. "And then when you get in the race, the strategy.

"We saw a lot of two-tire stuff when we were here in the spring and I would imagine it would be the same (Sunday), so track position is really going to be the name of the game."

Johnson has 69 career Sprint Cup victories, 24 of which came in the Chase. One of those Chase wins came here, in 2011, and after he qualified 19th.

Brad Keselowski holds the record for winning from deepest in the field at Kansas, capturing the 2011 STP 400 after starting 25th.

The winner of three races in a four-race span earlier this season, Johnson is coming off a third-place finish a week ago at Dover. It was his best finish since winning at Michigan in June.

In the opening three-race Challenger Round at Chicago, Loudon and Dover, Johnson qualified seventh, sixth and eighth. He finished 12th, fifth and third.

Four of the seven remaining races will be contested on 1.5-mile tracks, layouts that Johnson calls his team’s "bread and butter."

"They’ve really been a strong suit for the No. 48 team over the years," he said. "This year, we’ve been competitive, but not dominant. And that’s what we’re looking to get sorted out here pretty late in the season.

"We can run well, but we would prefer to have more control than we do right now. And with as many 1.5-mile (tracks) that are left on the schedule, we have to get there."

Regan Smith still second in standings, but farther back after Kansas

RELATED: Play NASCAR Fantasy Live | Sign up for RaceView today

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A day that began on a difficult note didn’t get any better for NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Regan Smith, and as a result the JR Motorsports driver lost ground to teammate Chase Elliott in the battle for the series championship.

Smith crashed in qualifying Saturday morning, the team rolled out a backup car and then issues throughout the Kansas Lottery 300 left the 31-year-old 22nd at the finish, eight laps down to race-winner Kyle Busch.

With Elliott finishing 10th, Smith saw what had been a 26-point gap grow to 38 with just four races remaining.

"It really started yesterday," Smith said of his team’s struggles at the 1.5-mile track. "We just didn’t have the speed we wanted so we kind of changed a lot of stuff to go out and qualify this morning."

FULL SERIES COVERAGE

Smith said the car was "really loose" in the first qualifying session, and then in the second "I backed into the wall."

"Anytime you do that," he added, "you’ve got to roll (out) a backup car two hours before the race (and) you really have to expect anything to happen."

Smith made steady progress in the early stages of the race, taking advantage of numerous cautions to drop on to pit road and allow his team to make adjustments.

By Lap 53, he was running inside the top 15. But as the race headed into its final 50 laps, a broken sway arm brought him to pit road for extended repairs.

"My guys did a great job, just getting the car … to where we could get to the grid with it, much less being competitive there for the first stages of the race," Smith said. "It was kind of what we anticipated for the day.

"Disappointing, you know, it’s obviously disappointing."

Although he extended his points lead, Elliott, one of seven Sunoco Rookie of the Year contenders in the field, wasn’t pleased with his result, either.

"We really struggled, and there’s no excuse for that so we just had a bad day today," the 18-year-old said. "Regardless of what the points situation looks like, this was not the performance we were hoping for today. I’m bummed about it."

Kevin Harvick trailed Busch across the line, followed by Ryan Blaney and Paul Menard. Fifth-place rookie Ty Dillon was the highest finishing series regular.

While Smith trails Elliott by 38, Dillon managed to close to within two of Smith (1,030-1,028) for the No. 2 spot.

Brian Scott, who finished ninth, is fourth (-57) while Elliott Sadler, seventh on the day, is fifth (-60).

"I thought we were going to be a little farther inside the top 10 there towards the end of the race and got to racing with those guys and just kind of made a mistake and got us put back," Elliott said. "So we’ll try to be better for Charlotte and move on."

FULL SERIES COVERAGE

Ryan Blaney qualified second and will pit in the fourth stall. A fellow Ford driver, Chris Buescher, was third-fastest and chose the seventh stall with an opening behind him.

Across the opening from Buescher will be Kevin Harvick, who qualified fourth, in stall 8 with an opening in front of him. Another Chevy driver, Brian Scott, selected the 14th stall with an opening in front of him. The top Toyota in the field, sixth-fastest qualifier Kyle Busch, will pit across the opening in stall 12.

Points leader Chase Elliott qualified 12th and will pit in the 43rd stall, the first pit box at the Turn 4 entrance to pit road.

Stewart-Haas Racing driver picks up eighth pole of season

RELATED: Get the full race lineup

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Kevin Harvick feels his No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet can beat every other car on the track, and on Friday he did. For the eighth time this season.

After destroying his own track record in the second round of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series knockout qualifying, Harvick sped around 1.5-mile Kansas Speedway in 27.235 seconds (197.621 mph) in the final session to win the pole for Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 (2 p.m. ET on ESPN) and affirm his status as the speed car in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.

The Coors Light Pole Award was Harvick’s third straight at Kansas, his eighth of the season and the 14th of his career. Harvick’s money lap was only slightly slower than the 197.773 mph he ran in posting the top speed in the second round, a lap that blew away the previous track record of 194.658 mph he set on May 9.

Non-Chaser Brian Vickers qualified second at 196.307 mph for the first race in the Contender Round of the Chase. Aric Almirola (196.150 mph), eliminated from the Chase last week at Dover, claimed the third starting spot.

Chase drivers occupied the next five spots on the grid: Joey Logano, Jeff Gordon, Brad Keselowski, Kyle Busch and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Though Harvick now has eight poles, he has but two victories this year, and he hasn’t won a Sprint Cup race since April at Darlington.

"For whatever reason this (track) fits everything I have going on with my driving style," Harvick said. "In the end, it’s about having fast cars. Obviously, last year we had a fast car, and this year we’ve had a fast car as well. I have to thank everyone on the Budweiser team for staying focused, continuing to build faster race cars and doing everything we need to do — that we can control.

"The cars are fast, we’re qualifying well. The pit stops are good. The cars are reliable. Everything is going good. We just need the good luck to go with it. It’s like I keep telling these guys, everything will come full circle, and hopefully it does it at the right time this year. … With a little bit of good luck, I just feel we can beat every car on the race track on any given week at any style race track, and that’s a really positive, good feeling to have."

Gordon, last week’s winner at Dover, felt he got all he could out of his lap (196.050 mph) but was no match for Harvick.

"I’m happy with where we ended up," Gordon said. "I feel like that’s about where we were. Kevin was in another league."

In sharp contrast to Harvick’s flawless qualifying performance, six-time series champion Jimmie Johnson had more than his share of issues. Trying to improve on a lackluster first lap, Johnson spun during his second attempt in the first round and will start 32nd on Sunday.

Other Chase drivers qualified as follows: Kasey Kahne, 10th; Carl Edwards, 12th; Ryan Newman, 17th; Denny Hamlin, 25th; and Matt Kenseth, 27th.

The Cup cars are back on track Saturday with a pair of practices that run from 11-11:50 a.m. ET (FS1) and 2-2:50 p.m. ET (FS2).

Sprint Cup Series lays first rubber on track after rainy morning; Nationwide Series has practices combined

RELATED: Play NASCAR Fantasy Live | Sign up for RaceView today

NATIONWIDE SERIES PRACTICE | RESULTS

Ryan Blaney topped the leaderboard in the lone Nationwide Series practice session, putting the No. 22 Team Penske Ford in the first position with a lap of 180.048 mph. Rookies Chris Buescher and Ty Dillon were close behind but couldn’t top the 180 mph mark, taking second and third with laps of 179.880 and 179.456, respectively. Buescher ran the most laps of the session with 55, but scored his best lap in the Roush Fenway Racing Ford on his 27th turn around the track.

Kyle Busch and Trevor Bayne completed the top five. Busch took the No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota for a spin earlier in the session, but kept it out of the wall, preventing any major damage. After some adjustments in the garage, Busch was able to move his ride up towards the top of the leaderboard. Dakoda Armstrong also faced issues handling his No. 43, spinning in Turns 2 and 3 to bring out a caution flag during practice, ending the session in 23rd.

Points leader Chase Elliott‘s best effort of 178.743 mph put his No. 9 Chevrolet in the 13th position on the leaderboard. His closest competition for the series title, teammate Regan Smith, was just behind in 16th place with a lap of 178.171 mph.

After the first scheduled practice was canceled due to rain Friday morning, the second session — originally slated to run from 3 to 4:20 p.m. ET — was extended to a 4 to 5:30 p.m. ET practice.

Qualifying is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. ET on Saturday, with coverage on FOX Sports 2. The Kansas Lottery 300 will follow at 3:30 p.m. ET, and will be televised on ESPN.

SPRINT CUP SERIES PRACTICE 1 | RESULTS

After a rainy morning at Kansas Speedway, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series went out on schedule to lay rubber onto the clean track. Chase contender Jeff Gordon topped the leaderboard with a fastest lap of 196.257 mph, followed by Kevin Harvick, whose lap of 196.178 mph showed the No. 4 will once again be one of the fastest cars on the track. Gordon and Harvick are both defending winners at the track, with Gordon winning the May race at Kansas Speedway and Harvick winning the fall race last year.

Greg Biffle and Aric Almirola, who were both eliminated from the Chase after last weekend’s race at Dover International Speedway, practiced as though they were still in contention, both placing inside the top 10, with Biffle’s lap of 195.730 mph placing him third on the leaderboard. Almirola ended the session in ninth. Kyle Larson was fourth-fastest, with fellow rookie Austin Dillon in rounding out the top five.

Kasey Kahne, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Ryan Newman were the only drivers among the remaining Chase competitors to place in the top 10, finishing seventh, eighth and 10th, respectively.

Team Penske drivers Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski, both winners in the Challenger Round of the new Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup format, were 12th-fastest and 18th-fastest, respectively. Among the other Chase contenders, Jimmie Johnson was 14th-fastest, Carl Edwards was 21st-fastest and Kyle Busch 25th-fastest, with the Joe Gibbs Racing driver at the bottom of the leaderboard among the post-season players.

Qualifying for the Hollywood Casino 400 is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

Sprint Cup Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender to pilot the No. 5

RELATED: Play NASCAR Fantasy Live | Sign up for RaceView today

Alex Bowman, a Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender for BK Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, will drive the No. 5 NASCAR Nationwide Series car at Charlotte Motor Speedway in the Blue Cross Blue Shield Drive for the Cure 300 (Oct. 10, 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2).

FULL SERIES COVERAGE

The team announced it via a JRM 360 video on Thursday, showing Bowman sneaking his way into the shop and putting his name above the door. Watch the video below.

Co-owner Kelley Earnhardt Miller talked about Bowman getting behind the wheel on "The Morning Drive" on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio on Friday.

"We had an opening in our car for Charlotte and an opening in Phoenix this year so they’re excited about running Charlotte and if they can put some funding together for Phoenix," Earnhardt Miller said. "For us, our original business for JR Motorsports is to build that talent and send them to the next level. Alex had the opportunity to run in the Sprint Cup car this year.

"Being on the track every week is important so we’re excited about him and his talent and hopefully seeing if we can put something together in the future with somebody like him."

Earnhardt Miller also looked ahead to 2015, noting sponsorship on championship contender Regan Smith‘s car is almost complete after Dale Earnhardt Jr. announced on Twitter earlier this week that Smith would return.

"We’re going to have Kasey Kahne, I think, drive a few more races for us in the 5 car so that’s about the only difference," Earnhardt Miller said. "We have about six races open on Regan’s car for sponsorship so we’re situated pretty good…."

NASCAR Nationwide Series opening practice was scheduled to start at noon ET, but a cold, driving rain and wind caused the 50-minute session to be canceled. Opening practice for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series was scheduled at 1 p.m. ET for the fourth race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup playoffs.

The lone Nationwide practice will now take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. ET, and Coors Light Pole Qualifying for the Sprint Cup field (5:45 p.m. ET, ESPN2) is so far on schedule at the 1.5-mile track.

Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 (2 p.m. ET, ESPN) marks the opening race in the Contender Round, the second three-race series of eliminations in the new Chase postseason format. Just 12 drivers remain title-eligible after last weekend’s cut at Dover International Speedway; the championship field will be trimmed to eight in two weeks at Talladega Superspeedway.

Kevin Harvick enters the 400.5-mile event as the defending race winner. Jeff Gordon, who prevailed last weekend at Dover, also won Kansas’ most recent race May 10.
