So much for big mo…
"A year ago we won the race and then finished last in the Chase so I am not a big believer in the momentum thing." – Carl Edwards

Who to watch
Six-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, a three-time winner at Richmond, said he believes this weekend’s race will come down to Kevin Harvick, teammate Jeff Gordon and Brad Keselowski. "All three are showing speed and all three were really strong here in the spring at various times," he said. "This is one of Jeff’s better tracks, one of Kevin’s better tracks, and then the same with Brad."

Who’s chasing who?
Kyle Larson (Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates), Greg Biffle (Roush Fenway Racing), Clint Bowyer (Michael Waltrip Racing) and Ryan Newman (Richard Childress Racing) enter tonight’s race looking to secure one of the two remaining unclaimed Chase positions. Bowyer will start closest to the front, qualifying sixth, followed by Larson (eighth), Newman (12th) and Biffle (17th). Newman and Biffle are in the favored spots in the series, sitting ninth and 10th, respectively, in points, and holding the final two spots in the Chase standings as well. Bowyer and Larson are close enough however, to make it interesting. Of course, a first win by any driver in the top 30 in points would trump any points finish.

Top driver ratings
(Based on past 19 races at Richmond)
Denny Hamlin, Joe Gibbs Racing No. 11 Toyota (112.5)
Kyle Busch, Joe Gibbs Racing No. 18 Toyota (111.1)
Kevin Harvick, Stewart-Haas Racing No. 4 Chevrolet (109.9)

Fortune teller | See the scenarios
"I’m going to go see my palm reader tonight and just kind of get a forecast of what I’ve got going on tomorrow." – Ryan Newman on how he’ll handle the numerous Chase-clinching scenarios

Breaking through
Two drivers in this week’s field earned their first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory at Richmond: Kasey Kahne most recently (May 14, 2005) and Tony Stewart (Sept. 11, 1999)

Chase pressure?
"If I could ever pick a track that I had to go to that I had to try to fight my way into this Chase, it’s this one. This is one of my best tracks. … Hopefully, she’ll be good to me one more time." – Clint Bowyer looking forward to tonight’s race

Former Richmond International Raceway winners in the field
Kyle Busch (4); Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart (3); Jeff Gordon, Denny Hamlin, Clint Bowyer (2); Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards, Kasey Kahne, Matt Kenseth, Joey Logano, Joe Nemechek, Ryan Newman (1).

‘Rowdy’ leads wire to wire for fourth Nationwide Series win of 2014

RICHMOND, Va.—-Picture perfect.

Coors Light Pole Award winner Kyle Busch led all 250 laps in Friday night’s Virginia529 College Savings 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Richmond International Raceway and beat runner-up and series leader Chase Elliott to the finish line by 1.323 seconds.

Driving a No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota that was the clear class of the field, Busch won for the fourth time this season, the fifth time at Richmond and the series-best 67th time in his career.

FULL SERIES COVERAGE

It was the second time Busch has led every lap in a Nationwide Series race, the first coming at Phoenix in 2011 when he led 200 laps after starting from the pole.

"It’s been a while, if you think about it," said Busch, who hadn’t won a Nationwide race at Richmond since 2011. "We’ve had a lot of bad luck lately, and it feels good, trying to get some mojo back, get ready for tomorrow night (Saturday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race), see what we can salvage there and roll on into the Chase."

Busch said Joe Gibbs Racing did considerable work on its short-track package after finishing third behind the Chevrolets of Kevin Harvick and Elliott in April.

"All in all, the guys did a great job," Busch said. "They were really smart about what they needed, what we needed, what I needed."

Harvick ran third after ceding the second position to Elliott on the race’s final restart on Lap 233. Ryan Blaney came home fourth, followed by Brian Scott and Regan Smith, who fell 19 points behind Elliott, his JR Motorsports teammate in the series standings.

While Busch spent the race comfortably out front after taking the green flag from the pole position, Harvick systematically worked his way forward from the 15th starting position. Harvick passed Blaney for the second spot just before the caution flag flew for the fifth time on Lap 166 because of debris on the backstretch.

But that was as close as Harvick could get. Busch quickly pulled away to a lead of more than two seconds after the subsequent restart on Lap 172 and continued to pull away. The margin stabilized at roughly 3.3 seconds as Busch and Harvick worked heavy traffic as the laps counted down.

Harvick began to eat into Busch’s advantage before a yellow flag interrupted his progress.

NASCAR called the sixth caution on Lap 226 after Landon Cassill’s Chevrolet brushed the wall in Turn 2, but the restart on Lap 33 produced more of the same for Busch, who blocked Elliott to the inside and took off.

"Kyle had a much better car and was able to take off on the short runs and get way out there," said Harvick, who thought he might have been able to catch Busch during the final run, if not for the caution.

NASCAR is taking the rear gear from Busch’s winning No. 54 Camry back to its research-and development center in Concord, North Carolina for further evaluation. Should any penalties be warranted, they will be announced next week.

Team Penske driver will lead field to green in Saturday’s Federated Auto Parts 400 (7:30 p.m. ET, ABC)

RELATED: Federated Auto Parts 400 lineup

RICHMOND, Va.— Another qualifying round and another front-row starting spot for Brad Keselowski and Team Penske.

Keselowski sped around the .75-mile Richmond International Raceway in 21.234 seconds (126.618 mph) in Friday afternoon’s time trials to win the Coors Light Pole Award for Saturday night’s Federated Auto Parts 400 (7:30 p.m. ET on ABC), the 26th and final regular-season race of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season.

The driver of the No. 2 Ford won his fourth pole of 2014, his first at Richmond and the seventh of his career. In Saturday’s race, which will complete the field for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, Keselowski will start on the front row for the 11th time this season.

Jeff Gordon qualified second at 126.039 mph despite failing to nail Turns 1 and 2 in either of the knockout qualifying rounds. Six-time series champion Jimmie Johnson (125.898 mph) claimed the third spot on the grid, followed by Kevin Harvick (125.857 mph) and Joey Logano (125.663 mph).

Four drivers not yet qualified for the Chase earned starting spots in the top 12: Clint Bowyer (sixth), Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (seventh), Kyle Larson (eighth) and Ryan Newman (12th). Newman needs a finish of 18th or better (19th if he leads a lap and 20th if he leads most laps) to clinch a berth in NASCAR’s 10-race postseason, which kicks off Sept. 14 at Chicagoland Speedway (2 p.m. ET on ESPN).

Keselowski would like nothing better than to break the current five-way tie for top seeding in the Chase. Keselowski, Gordon, Johnson, Logano and Dale Earnhardt Jr. have three victories each this season through 25 races.

"This is by far the best car I’ve had (at Richmond)," said Keselowski, the 2012 series champion. "I think we’ve got a really strong shot of winning this weekend, so I’m very, very excited—-everybody says they’re excited, but when you sit on the pole, and you’re fast in practice, you’ve got a real reason to be excited.

"I’d really like to get that fourth win. We’ve got three wins, and that’s a great start to the season, but I’m still very, very hungry."

Drivers had to adapt to a new Goodyear tire at Richmond this year, and Gordon said he was baffled both by the race track and by the quality of his own performance during qualifying.

"I’ve been confused most of the day, even in qualifying," Gordon said. "I mean I was sliding up the race track, running a groove I didn’t really want to be running, and yet we were fastest in the first round and second fastest in the second round.

"I’m sitting here baffled by it, but it just tells me we’ve got a really good race car that’s got good speed in it, and we’ve just got to get that balance right and keep working hard… Brad put a great lap up there. It was just incredible what he did that second round."

Note: Clay Rogers failed to make the 43-car field.

Race-winning entry set to be examined more closely

RELATED: Play NASCAR Fantasy Live | Sign up for RaceView today

RICHMOND, Va. — Kyle Busch‘s seemingly flawless race Friday night at Richmond International Raceway didn’t go completely without a hitch.

FULL SERIES COVERAGE

NASCAR officials announced that the rear gear of Busch’s winning Joe Gibbs Racing No. 54 Toyota would be taken to the NASCAR Research & Development Center in Concord, North Carolina., for further evaluation. It was the only issue reported from post-race technical inspection after Friday night’s Virginia529 College Savings 250.

Busch was the Coors Light Pole Award winner and led all 250 laps of his fourth Nationwide Series victory of the year and his 67th win of his career on the tour.

The inspection findings do not necessarily indicate that a penalty is forthcoming, but any action on behalf of NASCAR would likely take place early next week before all three NASCAR national series converge on Chicagoland Speedway for its tripleheader weekend.

Kyle Busch Motorsports, a Busch-owned subsidiary of the Gibbs organization, has been penalized more than once this year for ride-height violations in the Camping World Truck Series.

Red flags come out twice for rain during NNS qualifying

RICHMOND, Va. — Rain has put Friday’s on-track activity on hold at Richmond International Raceway.

Much like the day before, late-afternoon storms affected the racing schedule on the .75-mile track. Friday, Coors Light Pole Qualifying for the NASCAR Nationwide Series was interrupted by a brief amount of rain after its 3:45 p.m. ET start, but started shortly after a small delay. After about 10 minutes of on-track activity, rain brought out the red flag for the session. After a roughly 15-minute delay, qualifying resumed before being halted again due to rain with 15 minutes left in the first round of the session.

With the numerous delays in the first round of qualifying, NASCAR decided that the first 30-minute session would be completed and that would set the field for Friday night’s Virginia529 College Savings 250 (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2). There would be no second round of qualifying for the Nationwide Series. Kyle Busch took the Coors Light Pole Award for the Nationwide Series race with a speed of 120.903 mph.

Coors Light Pole Qualifying for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series‘ Federated Auto Parts 400 (7:30p.m. ET, ABC) was slated for a 5:45 p.m. ET start.

Thursday, severe rainfall amounts caused flooding in the Nationwide Series garage area, causing tires to float away and teams to place cars on jackstands to avoid sustaining water damage. The associated lightning forced spotters off their rooftop perch at 3:20 p.m. ET before the first wave of rain 10 minutes later brought an early end to final Nationwide practice.

Saturday night’s 400-lapper is the final regular-season race before the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup playoffs begin the following weekend at Chicagoland Speedway.

JGR driver tops rain-shortened qualifying session

RELATED: Virginia529 College Savings 250 lineup

Kyle Busch topped all others in a rain-soaked NASCAR Nationwide Series qualifying session to pick up his sixth Coors Light Pole Award of the season Friday at Richmond International Raceway.

FULL SERIES COVERAGE

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver will start at the head of the field for Friday’s Virginia529 College Savings 250 (7:30 p.n. ET, ESPN2) after picking up his fourth career pole at the 0.75-mile short track. His best speed of 120.903 mph was just enough to best Team Penske driver Ryan Blaney, who clocked in at 120.498 and will join Busch on the front row.

The session was delayed twice due to rain before the first session completed. Due to time constraints, NASCAR chose to forego the final session and crown Busch the winner.

Nationwide points leader Chase Elliott was fourth at 120.155, followed by Kyle Larson at 119.941. Brian Scott (119.931) will join Matt Kenseth (119.713) on Row 3, while his Richard Childress Racing teammates Brendan Gaughan (119.591) and Ty Dillon (119.554) will line up behind him.

Trevor Bayne (119.532) and Dylan Kwasniewski (119.495) rounded out the top 10.

Sprint Cup Series regular Kevin Harvick (119.342) will start 15th.

‘True Southern iconic brands’ continue partnership that began in 2012

RICHMOND, Va. — Officials with Darlington Raceway and Bojangles’ announced a five-year sponsorship extension for the naming rights of the NASCAR track’s annual Southern 500 Sprint Cup Series race.

"This is a perfect partnership for Darlington and Bojangles’ because they are both true Southern iconic brands," Chip Wile, president of Darlington Raceway, said in announcing the five-year deal. "It really solidifies our position not only in the sport, but in the state.

"Our partnership goes way beyond just our race weekend. Everything that we do at the track … that group really gets behind. It means a lot."

Bojangles’, whose headquarters are located in Charlotte, North Carolina, has held the naming rights to the annual NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race since 2012. The race will return to its long-time Labor Day weekend date in 2015, a spot it held from 1950 through 2003.

"It’s somewhat like a family tradition for me," said Randy Poindexter, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Bojangles’. "As a kid growing up in the Carolinas, it was a tradition to always go to Myrtle Beach on Labor Day weekend and then on that Sunday go up to Darlington for the races. I think changing the dates is going to be awesome for the community and for Bojangles’."
